So how much damage can a BM hunter do in this fight, and how important is it that a hunter perform that role? Well here’s the WWS for this fight. One quarter of the total damage is Our Responsibility.
What do our individual stats look like? Well we’ve got that covered as well.

Remember that for us BS hunters, the spirit bolt sections are times where we blow the dust off our arcane shot, multishot and serpent sting since our steady shot will be pushed back and preventing our autoshots from going off.
Hex Lord and Zul’jin are the fights where Hunters are expected to earn their raid spot. Hex Lord is nearly as Hunter friendly as it gets and the raid will need our non-casting ranged DPS to power through that nasty dragonhawk phase on ZJ.
Thelastdeadmouse on 18 Jul 2008 at 10:50 pm #
Oops, BM, not BS hunter. Always remember to proof-read kids.
kunukia on 18 Jul 2008 at 11:13 pm #
Very cool. Sigh, another boss I will never see.

wow! good job brk!
deltronzero & automator on 19 Jul 2008 at 3:56 am #
So High King Maulgar is Moroes 1.75?
Prathi on 19 Jul 2008 at 6:30 am #
Thelastetc: you’re also thinking of the eagle phase rather than the dragonhawk phase.
Kunukia: don’t be so sure.
I’m on an RP server whose progression is somewhat lacking, and I’m killing him at least once a week, twice if I can rope enough guildies into a mid-week run. Need another mojo! :O

Quick question. Whats that program u display the score with?
Or ist is some site?
Ihumpedyourmom on 19 Jul 2008 at 8:34 am #
16 KC is low for that fight do you manually activate or have it in macro?
Azrelix on 19 Jul 2008 at 8:41 am #
Id say prob manually activate but having it on auto is not a clever move as this fight is all about adapting to his stolen abilities, dont want to be sending your pet into a whirlwind or consecration etc.
Ive never run ZA with this kind of makeup myself seems interesting, how far off the timed chest were you BRK?
kunukia on 19 Jul 2008 at 9:16 am #
@Prathi Thanks for your encouragement. Actually the group I sometimes raid with has been going to Zul’Aman for several months, so if I chose to go, I could get there. I have disabilities that make it very difficult for me to concentrate for much longer than an hour, so am pretty much limited to Gruul’s and Mags, although I have gone to parts of Kara and SSC.
That is why I love the solo aspect of this game, I can do stuff at my own pace. And I am enthused about the promise of short and snappy instances in WotLK.
Kelektra on 19 Jul 2008 at 9:49 am #
If we hadn’t had a mis-pull/wipe we would have had an extra 7 minutes at the end of the Dragonhawk, giving us a total of 12 mins to get from dragonhawk to lynx. So we had quite a bit of time.
Ihumpedyourmom on 19 Jul 2008 at 11:30 am #
12 min to go from dragon to lynx is probably not enough time if you are running three healers. Start running just 2 and you all will have bears soon enough. All the DPS should be a min of 900 or replace em till they learn to play class
Rexfelis on 19 Jul 2008 at 11:40 am #
Thanks BRK! My guild is just now getting stuck at Malacrass (4/6, and about 10-sec from 3 chests in the timed run), so this is timely indeed.

I have a question for you about Hex Lord, which I usually get to see on my warlock, not so much on my hunter.
Do you spec your pet with full shadow resist for the bolts?
BRK on 19 Jul 2008 at 12:44 pm #
Not full, no. We always have Rank 2 Shadow Resist trained, and we’ll spec’d Rank 3 Shadow Resist for this fight, if we’re able.
Rotseh on 19 Jul 2008 at 2:59 pm #
Shadow Resistance gear (for instance the BT one) really makes this fight trivial.
Rotseh on 19 Jul 2008 at 3:01 pm #
What also really helps with this fight is to know that if you keep Hexlord Malacrass above 97% HP — thus no damage on him beside the tank in the beginning — the Spirit Bolts only tick for 500 or less and can easily be handled by the healers. This gives you all the time to kill as many adds as you need to.

@kunukia
I found I was not able to do much raiding due to my family needs at all hours with little ones, and although the hunter nerfs have hurt our soloing instances so well, many are still doable.
Trying to run them in an hour or less does make it a bit more of a challenge though for sure!
Maevet on 19 Jul 2008 at 10:01 pm #
even with SR3 stam food, and mend pet ticking I still lose my pet atleast twice durning those god awful spirit bolts
kunukia on 19 Jul 2008 at 10:05 pm #
@Fahr and Bacon
Well, I can actually play for hours at a time, it is the focus that is needed in a raid or even a group, and the confusion and speed of the stuff on vent and in chat is exhausting also. On the plus side, I often run with my RL son, and he helps me by letting me not communicate, I mean, he and I will be on TS, and if I have to say something quickly, he will do it for me; he can type faster than I can think. Darn kids that grew up in the computer age.
Rotseh on 20 Jul 2008 at 12:22 am #
@Maevet:
Are you sure it’s the Spirit Bolts that kill your pet? Usually, hunters forget to pull back their pet if the Spirit Drain is Druid (Thorns) or Paladin (Consecration) or Warrior (Whirlwind) or Warlock (Rain of Fire). If your pet has taken or is still taking damage from these sources, it naturally is much harder to bring your pet alive through the Spirit Bolts.
SR3/SR4 plus some Greater Stamina and Avoidance Rank 2 (!) should be enough to keep your pet alive. Make sure the Shadow Protection buff is also given to your pet. Throw in some Sporeling Snack for good measure.
If you eventually have and wear some SR gear, your pet is also going to benefit from it, so SR2 may be enough.

Huntards (or in my case, huntarts) for… the… WIN!
In my guild, our top hunters (two MM, one BM) make up the top 3 dps positions in any raids we do, from humble little Karazhan to SSC/TK and Mount Hyjal.
There are exceptions such as AoE-heavy fights where the squishies shine, but over the course of most raids our damage output simply owns.
Just to be “fair” on the squishies, I normally do overall and boss kill damage announcements with pet data separated from owner data… and then we still own, but by less of a margin.
Would that all hunters knew what they were truly capable of given thoughtful gear selection and socketing and a bit of time spent in the macro interface and in the delightful presence of Dr.Boom.
Perhaps then we would be a more sought-after dps class in raids.
Sempai on 21 Jul 2008 at 11:07 am #
I always went max shadow resist on my pet for this fight. If you have 2 pieces of T5 your pet should never die on this boss.
@BRK - congrats on getting the kill without a rogue kicking, however having a shaman surely helps shocking.
@ Mithrilina - IF your MM hunters are pwning the rest of your raid. wow… have the rest of your DPS learn2play
Anchovy on 21 Jul 2008 at 4:02 pm #
He didn’t Soul Siphon the hunter, I noticed. When he does that, I’ve found you can FD out of it. He might get one set of traps down, but after the FD, he won’t do anything hunterish.
Mithrilina on 07 Aug 2008 at 12:35 pm #
-@Sempai: On Hyjal trash, the AoE squishies push the hunters back to 5th-10th place in the raid, some of them clocking 3.5k dps and higher. On boss fights, we’re at the top, my personal best dps against Malacrass being 1314, and Morogrim Tidewalker 1354 - not counting my pet in either case. BM hunters far behind, with or without pets counted in.
When played correctly (auto, steady, arcane, multi-shot all on spam), MM can indeed do ridiculous dps, regardless of what people say. The mana drain is terrible, but there’s a price to pay for everything. (On the other hand, a MM hunter who doesn’t know how to play his class/spec is a shameful thing, and often suffers an “accidental” Misdirect courtesy of a “bug” in a macro.
Apparently Black Temple makes BM dps shine above MM dps, but I used to hear that very same thing said about ZA… then TK… then MH. So I suppose I’ll wait and see.
-@Anchovy: Good to know! I’ll consider that next time we do Hex Lord Malacras. Now I wonder whether mages’ Ice Block would also stop his Soul Siphon…
