Achievements for Hunters

Collect a non-combat pet?

Get exalted with a faction?

Level fishing?

Pick a flower?

Why not make some real achievements, Blizz, like our recommendations for hunters:

BRK’s Top Twenty Achievements for Hunters

1. Solo a 70 cockroach. Paladin. Whatever spec; they’re all PITAs.

Do you ever run across an enemy and totally get the jump on them, your blood races and you’re going to get to smush them into dust? Feels great, right? But what happens when that person is a Paladin? You complain, that’s what.

Last time we caught a paladin off-guard and alone, we just sighed and went about our business, left him alone. If a paladin has more than 10k health, we don’t even bother with them anymore unless they’re actively healing someone else. Cockroaches. For all their Light, Might, and all that’s Right mumbo-jumbo, is there a class more despised, loathed, and spat-upon than Paladins?

/pfft

2. Solo a 70 Shadowstep rogue. They’re the only rogue-spec that doesn’t run away from us once they realize we’re not afraid of them. Very few kills feel better than this one, as it’ll take all you evasion-tactics and skills to pull off.

3. Solo a SL/SL 70 warlock. Toughest squishies in the game, so bring resilience-gear or you’re in deep trouble. Kill the puppy and he’ll dot you to death. Try to kill him and his minion will aborb all your damage. Welcome to Healthstone City, population You.

4. Kite a warrior to his death, laughing as he gives up and tries to kill your pet. Kiting warriors should be a Hunter Olympics event.

5. Melee a Marksman hunter to his death, his pitiful pet doing nothing to you as your BigRedPet murders him. /buwahahaha!

6. Out-burst-damage and kill a boomkin. Bad birdies! Careful, they’re much more dangerous than they look.

7. Have your pet solo any class, any spec. We’ve done this, defending towers in AV. A squishes tries to take our tower, we kite him around the upper platform, staying out of his LoS, while Hobbes eats him up.

8. Kill 150,000 mages, any spec. In the rock-paper-scissors Warcraft-world, hunters destroy mages and we /yawn whenever we fight one.

9. Time an Intimidation perfectly so that a shaman or druid couldn’t get a heal off before you crush him.

10. Chain-trap an enemy, any class. Two traps are acceptable and nothing pisses someone off more than getting trapped twice.

11. Win a 2-on-1 engagement using traps to CC. With the easy availability of PvP trinkets that break our traps, this is a very hard one to check off, but not impossible.

12. Hunt down a rogue who tries to Vanish to escape certain death at your hands. They’re down to 25% health and realize they can’t stay in melee range, so they flee. Hunt them down; you hunter, you! Flare and Track Hidden, use the terrain to make a guess as to which way they fled. Burn them down, pop an cold one.

13. Obtain either the Bow of Relentless Strikes or the Merciless Crossbow. T5-level gear for farming Kara or honor? There is very little reason a hunter shouldn’t be sporting one of these.

14. Obtain a Battlemaster Trinket. It’s expensive, 30,000 honor, but since we got ours, we’ve seen how valuable it is. That 1700k health it provides on-use has saved us so many times, we can’t count them. Especially useful against warlocks, it seems.

15. Obtain the Season 3 2h axe. 800 arena points for the 2nd best hunter-melee weapon in the game; you must have one.

16. Use a Frost Trap to slow the entire Horde offensive into Dun Baldar, or slow the entire Alliance offense into Frostwolf. Nothing says Defense like a Frost Trap and AoE DPS blasting everything in the effect.

17a. Track the Horde AFKers on the little tower next to Iceblood Graveyard and murder them as the rest of the Horde cheers. Enough said.

17b. Track the Alliance AFKers at the back path from the Alliance starting cave and murder them as the rest of the Alliance cheers. Ditto.

18. Capture a mine in Alterac Valley, Blacksmith in Arathi Basin, and run a flag back in both Warsong Gulch and Eye of the Storm.

19a. Stand atop the hill at the Lumbermill and force the Horde charging from Farm to back down by Hunter’s Marking each of them.

19b. Stand at the pass at Iceblood Tower and force the entire Alliance offensive from proceeding by just standing there and looking menacing

20. Save a healer’s life. Ever watch how the good battleground players do their thing? Warriors and other big-hurt melee classes in front, healers and casters behind them. A nice formation that requires strategy to defeat. The strategy? Kill the healers, foshizzle.

Your enemy’s stealthy ferlols and rogues won’t waste their efforts on the front lines, they’ll sneak through and attack your healers. What are you gonna do?

Defend your healers! Don’t worry about honor kills and total damage dealt. Hang back a little, watch the battle take form. When those stealthers come out and gank your trees or priesties, you bring the rain down on them. Nobody can do this job better than a hunter, but we’re gonna guess you’ve never tried to do it.

Save a healer, get an achievement. Wouldn’t that be aweome?

Nicely put.. I think I will focus on getting the bow.. or xbow. even though winning a BG is next to impossible except for AV.. but 40 WSG’s.. ugh or 40 of the other ones is ugh squared.. why can’t pvp gear cost honor only?..lol

  2. Felandra on August 14th, 2008 1:35 pm

1, 2 and 20, few things feel better in BGs.

  3. Harmun on August 14th, 2008 1:49 pm

Awesome point about healers- hunters really are best at protecting us, and we really appreciate it!

Personally, I try to pay the hunter back by keeping heals on his pet, unlike most healers who assume pets are diversions at best.

11: done :D but i outgeared them, does it still count?

  5. Brian on August 14th, 2008 2:16 pm

    I’ll add

    21) Kill an enemy as they try to target around your bird pet, give up and attack the pet.

    22) Find a warlock/(s?)priest who is doing the ‘chain fear’ thing, and laugh at them as your BigRedHelper mauls them.

Xbow of Relentless Badge-Farming is not T5. It’s 2nd only to the orange bow from Sunwell for BM Hunters.

But I’m amused by how many of those points are intimately familiar – meleeing Marks hunters? Hilarious. I didn’t realize ’til recently that i can hit people really hard with that big old S3 axe.

I only try to kill Paladins if they’re impeding my progress with some other objective – healing my targets, guarding a flag, etc. The strategy is basically Viper Sting, /petattack, and plink ‘em every now and then while I run around laughing at their vain attempts to hit me. Eventually they bubble, which means soon I can kill them!

I’ll give you a pass on your hatred for pallies.

Seriously nothing more fun than wandering into on of the farms of Arathi Highlands as a level 34 prot pally and gathering several of the mobs and burning them down slowly, while they beat themselves to death against you.

  8. Anonymous on August 14th, 2008 3:00 pm

    Your Pally comments, BRK…lolol

I’m just too grateful to da past array of good prot pally tanks in heroic pugs to complain too much about how hard they are to kill.

    But it’s true.

When I am, say, guarding the blacksmith in Arathi and I see 4 of my fellow hordes trying to retake the farm against one alliance player…..

and then I notice a few minutes later that they STILL are trying to retake it…lol….I just say

    “Must be an Ally Pally”

And that usually be da case.

And I have tried to lure them into ambush by emoting

    “Pally want a cracker?”

    Doesn’t work.

  9. Falkara on August 14th, 2008 3:21 pm

LOL — BRK doesn’t seem to mind friendly pally (or otherwise) pocket healers as they follow him around BGs.

My healadin can frequently defend a base, and they will indeed have a hard time killing me…. however I have an equally difficult time killing them while trying to keep myself alive. Pally + just about any dps’er much greater chance of success =)

    /dream
WTB a way to “reward” / encourage more folks to defend / rescue healers in BGs… besides the oblivious heals and rare whispers of thanks they will receive from the appreciative healer.

  10. Altoholicmom on August 14th, 2008 3:26 pm

Geez BRK, I have the first three classes right down to spec. A Prot Pally with 18k Health, a Shadowstep Rogue, and a SL/SL lock. I never had much trouble with hunters with the lock, the paladin though, while able to stand alone for a long time, would eventually die due to running out of mana. As for the rogue? She’s new and Im still gearing her, but Ive taken down a hunter or two and they don’t make it easy for me. Perhaps someday we can cross paths and have a go and you can achieve all three things in one shot ^.^

    Good luck on all that.

  11. Franko on August 14th, 2008 3:48 pm

as a mage, i have to say i hate you.

but as a fan of your site, i have to say i love your site and your hunter education project.

    help, help – i’m conflicted!
    ; )

  12. modulok on August 14th, 2008 4:21 pm

BRK, seriously whats up with all of the Paladin hate? Did Uther himself kick Hobbes or something? I mean, typically this sort of venom is reserved for the OP classes rather than the arena laughs class. If you are having a hard time killing a Paladin then you need to learn to drain. If you think they are hard to kill now just wait till you can’t purge Blessing of Freedom with your normal shot rotation.

  13. Busket on August 14th, 2008 4:31 pm

I wish I could reward players for #20 myself. There’s almost nothing more gratifying than having someone notice that 2 rogues are beating me into the floor and trying to bail me out. Conversely, there’s nothing more frustrating when someone completely ignores said 2 rogues while complaining about the lack of heals.

  14. duniness on August 14th, 2008 4:41 pm

Answer to last question in #1….Warlocks

I have to agree with the rescue the casters bit. A common Horde tactic in AV is to send a pally in to bubble and draw attacks when they encounter a group of Alliance together, This happens a lot when they have the chokepoint up near IBGY. As soon as I see a Horde pally running up and trying to make himself conspicuous, I fire a flare at the nearest group of casters I see, run in and drop a frost trap if I can, and get ready to slaughter the rogues that will soon appear to attack our casters while everyone else is busy wasting their time with the bubbled pally. It is rogue kill city from then on as they will often focus on the casters while I fire my stings, multishot, and even volleys and steady shot at them. Once the first one goes down or flees and frees a caster from stunlock that caster hopefully joins the fun burning the rest of them or healing me.

Unfortunately, what casters rarely do, even when I am in melee/kiting with the rogues I just pulled off them, is throw me a heal during or afterwards. Often they stand there healing themselves while I am busy fighting the rogues, who if they win will then go back to chopping them up. Dumb. Give me Bestial Wrath and some heals and I can take on 2 rogues easily. Stand there healing yourself, and we are both dead.

Regarding number 5, I’d roar and tell you to bring it on, but A) dorfs and blueberries don’t fight and B) you probably outgear me :(

  19. Say what? on August 15th, 2008 9:29 am

“Stand there healing yourself, and we are both dead.”
Generally speaking, if a healer isn’t a complete idiot, he’s healing himself rather than you for a reason. Anyone who is competent will recognize someone else is taking damage and heal them as well.

And if they actually need to heal themself because they’re still being DPSed and can’t afford to heal you because then they’ll die, well … tough luck. I’ve been in situations where I can either heal myself and let someone else die, or heal someone else and die myself. I almost always choose to heal myself.

Because at least if I’m still alive, there’s a chance that someone else may show up to kill the DPSers beating on me. But if I die, then you sure as hell are dying too and then we both lose. Plus, I care more about me than I do you :P

  20. For the Pie on August 15th, 2008 10:47 am

In the gotta kill the healers mode I’ve seen entire (okay they were horrible but so were we) arena teams FF a shaman who sat there and healed himself and the rogue and I just burned the other team down one at a time. Resto shamans don’t run out of mana or something.

You want to know what happens when JUST ONE person makes an effort and does # 20?

Heres a screenshot of the result:

Sweet! I’ve actually done like 3 or 4 on this list :D I feel so acomplished!

  23. Matt on August 15th, 2008 12:51 pm

LOL, feeling the pally love, here :)

I’ve only raided and PVP’d as protection and ret specced (building up a pretty decent Ret PVP set as we speak), so I can only speak to those two ends.

Job of a protection paladin in BG’s is to basically piss everyone else off, while at the same time defending flags in AB/AV/etc. If you’re lucky, you have DPS in the area who can finish the attack off while everyone is focused on you running around annoying people (cause we sure as hell can’t hurt anyone :P ).

Ret pallys are kinda the same except they can actually do damage. Typical BG melee goes like this:

    1. you and your friends find a gaggle of horde at a flag
    2. run in and 1-2 shot every clothie you see, while ranged stunning hunters just to piss them off :P
    3. When life is low, bubble, heal up, and repeat 1-2
    4. PROFIT!

  24. scathatch on August 16th, 2008 7:37 am

I have to say ya hit the nail on the head with palis …I thought shadow step crap rogues were my worst enemy until my first 1v1 against a ret pali grrrrrrrr….that and I love you brining up defending the healers in bg…my wife plays a resto druid and when I leave my E-peen at the door we can easily defend off 3-5 attackers in say AB(i’m surv it’s a CC thing)….unfortunatly I must say my E-peen wins half the time though always feal like it’s my duty to prove surv hunters can do damage and get HKs:)…but I must say hunters are some of the best defenders in BGs CC lotsa damage mana drain eagle eye ..FOR THE HORDE!
