Orcapalooza?

We are concerned. Here’s our opinion of your interest in Orcapalooza:

We’re not convinced you’re gonna show up.

We’re not convinced you’re interested in a scavenger hunt.

We’re hearing grumblings that the scavenger hunt is too much like Work.

We see the number of registered teams is fewer than ten.

So we’re gonna sticky this post for 48 hours and make a Big Poll. You tell us: Scavanger Hunt or Traditional Race.

Online Surveys & Market Research

We’ve got sponsors for this thing, ya know. Prizes and everything:

Two 60day WoW cards from Kevin at WoWMacros.

A Warcraft Millionaire package from Brad at Warcraft Millionaire.

Two boxes of Warcraft playing cards from Dave at RedScorpionGames.

We’ve got a lot on the line; we need to make a big splash on Argent Dawn with Bloodmoon Chosen. We have a reputation for throwing a Big Party.

And we don’t want to mess up our Party Mojo.

Vote honestly. If we need to switch to a race, we’ll do it. Yes, TJ’s disappointment in you will be massive, but that’s a price we’re willing to accept.

I am with the ‘too much like work’ crowd. I will just watch if it is a scavenger hunt, I will participate if it is a race.

  2. Anotherclown on August 17th, 2008 11:33 am

The scavenger hunt sounds like fun but finding 4 other motivated people is the problem for me :P I’ll be there either way but if it’s a scavenger hunt I’ll prob be on the sidelines taken screenies

  3. Pablo on August 17th, 2008 11:47 am

I wondered if this was going to be a problem, since you write a blog for Hunters…and what do Hunters do? They solo.

Sure you can go to the forums and team up with four random strangers. For a scavenger hunt. Through Azeroth. PuG. From hell.

I love the scavenger hunt idea…and it would be easier to do it as a group…but ugh.

  4. logost on August 17th, 2008 11:51 am

I work weekends but will attend if possible regardless of the format. But it is difficult for me to join a team for my possible(but likely) attendance.

  6. Macadamia & Tesla on August 17th, 2008 12:11 pm

I’ve already bought my T-shirt, so I’ll be attending no matter what. (-:

  7. Marathonian on August 17th, 2008 12:14 pm

I already said this was too complicated an idea.

BRK,the vast majority of the people who read this site are hunters.Hunter’s usually get the stigma “Huntard”,regardless of ability. Therefore many of us solo WoW not by choice, but from necessity.

Some have friends and guild mates ingame who know we aren’t wipes waiting to happen. The rest of us muddle along with the occasional PuG.

A contest started by a site frequented, nay dominated by soloists needing teams of 5 was doomed to fail from the start.

  8. Donjio on August 17th, 2008 12:24 pm

I’m just not able to attend period. I’d love to be able to, but my work schedule is pretty messed up.

I won’t be attending…I’d like to, but the time doesn’t work for me.

  11. Sid on August 17th, 2008 12:47 pm

    None of the above.

I will take part if it is not like another one of those endless grinding quests and is some fun.

  12. Amanda on August 17th, 2008 12:50 pm

It sounds like a lot of fun, and I’d be all over it, except that I have plans that night. And, okay, even if I didn’t… getting a group of five is problematic at best. :/

  13. icedtrip on August 17th, 2008 12:55 pm

I would like the scavenger hunt, but I don’t know 4 other people that play WoW that would do it with me. I already have a hard enough time finding groups to run a few quests with, let alone this.

I love the idea. I really do, but I will have to say I am there for the race, but not for the scavenger hunt.

  14. Sharon on August 17th, 2008 1:07 pm

Well, boo. I was actually very excited when I saw that it was going to be a scavenger hunt, not just another run-and-get-killed-repeatedly race. I had friends who got bored quickly with the race who might not for a scavenger hunt, provided it wasn’t, as someone said above, like one of those mindless grinding quests. I just think the race thing has been done to death.

However, the problem I do see is what do you do about the prize if you do win? Split the 60 day WoW card between five people? That’s problematic.

    @ Nick S

    Your haiku is great.
Mine never come out that well.
    I won’t even try.

Like many others, I can’t field a team. I got stuck in a serious raiding guild after my casual one split, and none of them are interested in silly things like fun.

  20. Vurag on August 17th, 2008 2:44 pm

    @ Dranzig

Your comment couldn’t have been more rude if you called him an asshole for not downloading something which would probably take a long while to do. I haven’t downloaded the US trail in my time during Wow but I know installing the EU version of Wow is a full 1 day job, and thats with the CDs. Maybe I’m wrong and it would take a second but really you shouldn’t have been so rude. Like I say so many damn times “ITS A GAME!”

Oh and btw “I’m off the “Will not attend cos I’m in Eurpoe” crowd. :S” for me too.

  22. Awlbiste on August 17th, 2008 3:03 pm

The 5 people thing is just bleh. I’m sure with work it could be done but I’d rather join a group event and be responsible for only myself.

  23. Pike on August 17th, 2008 3:27 pm

Sorry BRK, I will be workin’ =(

  24. Fahr & Bacon on August 17th, 2008 3:39 pm

I echo the “pugging the other 4 members is a chore” list. It’s not because I’m a hunter and can only solo the world, it’s because it’s a different server, very in my main guild have time free, and it does become about the same thing as a “LFM – need healer and tank” even if it’s all DPS or anything slots to fill. :-(

I may try to run it myself just for fun, but a race at least I’d feel more like a viable participant.

  25. Gauntlet on August 17th, 2008 3:46 pm

I’m usually of the “I don’t group with people I don’t know” variety, and my wife has work on Saturdays now…
So, I could wander around and help, but I’m not sure I’d be much of an asset to a team… we’ll see.

  26. Felandra on August 17th, 2008 3:56 pm

Europe… coupled with the need to find 4 others willing to assist and not being sure I can make it, well that just killed it for me.

If it was just me, then I would only be letting me down. This way I might be letting four other guys down. I simply don’t like that prospect. Or just as bad, one of the 4 others ends up not showing. Similar endresult.

  27. rehnkvist on August 17th, 2008 4:12 pm

scavenger hunt sounds damn hard. sounds like a bunch of work, and a pain in the butt.

of course, that is just how it sounds. we all instinctively fear the worst, and without more information, we are afraid that this will be an “Elune-awful” hunt for the lowest of the low drop rate junk in durotar. >.<

    solution: samples. give us sample.

come up with 5 similar scavenger hunt items from what this would look like if it were being done in goldshire. give us some sense of what we’d be doing, and we won’t be afraid of a stupid scavenger hunt that will annoy the piss out of us. instead, we’ll be excited for the scavenger hunt which will be a glorious outing.

  28. scott_h on August 17th, 2008 4:33 pm

Are we supposed to sign up somewhere or something. I am finding this event confusing, which admittedly may just be my thick skull preventing me from digesting all the information.

  29. Vurag on August 17th, 2008 4:36 pm

I don’t mean this in a bad way but its funny how many people are saying “I don’t have 4 friends who would do this.” I so wish we could have a guild of us in EU hehe.

  30. Grainger on August 17th, 2008 5:40 pm

I am not voting because there isn’t a category for me…

I am in the “I love the scavenger hunt idea and really want to do it, but am waiting on my RL friends who play to commit to joining me”.

I think the scavenger hunt is much, much better than a race – but am not big on grouping with strangers and I actually hate groups when we aren’t all on vent…if the hunt was made so it could be done with any number of folks between 1 and 5 it would be great – but I don’t like the idea of being “forced” into a group.

I also applaud your efforts to get prizes, which are cool…but I do guess I echo what someone else said regarding prizes that benefit only one person when you have to join with 5.

My criticisms aside, overall I think it’s a great idea and I am 100% hoping my group comes through for me because I think it would be a blast.

  31. Forthus on August 17th, 2008 6:23 pm

I’d love to do a scavenger hunt….But i don’t think i’ll be able to get my mates on at the same time and i don’t want to do it with strangers
and plus splitting the prizes 5 ways will be a bit of a b@#$%

  32. Warcraft Mom on August 17th, 2008 6:27 pm

This sounded so FUN. I wish we could do it. Sadly, tragically, we will be on vacation for ten days in a cabin on the coast of Maine with no internet access. Instead we will have to fill our days eating lobster, sailing, snoozing in the hammock under the trees with a good book, hiking in the hills, picking blackberries in the woods, and all the other stuff we do every year.

Seriously this really does sound like a blast and I am very sorry we will miss it. We’ll save you some lobster, BRK.

  33. Borklet on August 17th, 2008 6:39 pm

I loved the idea of a scavenger hunt. I would, however, have been unable to join in on a silly trial account. As I discovered during the running of the bulls, it’s hard to interact with anyone in such a big crowd when you can’t yell, can’t trade and can’t even whisper anyone who’s not on your friends list. If it hadn’t been for a couple of kind people who noticed my European plight, I’d never have even got into a raid group for that.

If it’s a race, though, I’ll at least be able to run along with people and pretend I might have a chance of winning.

So I clicked the race only option. Sorry, TJ.

  34. Kailen on August 17th, 2008 6:48 pm

I’m not going to be participating in the hunt itself, but if possible, would like to help with the event. :)

This is mostly because my main is an alliance hunter on Argent Dawn. I can’t remember what guild you said were doing/helping with the event, but I recall it being Horde…unless I’m mistaken. At any rate, I would appreciate at least a comment response just to make sure I’m right.

    Cheers.

  35. dasbiest on August 17th, 2008 7:10 pm

mass hysteria ftw! I do not want to group with 4, but with 400 other budding orchids! Seriuosly, partof the appeal and fun of the runs is the mob mentallity. Now if we could just find a way to burn and pillage.

  36. Heather on August 17th, 2008 7:23 pm

The scavenger hunt sounds like fun, but I can’t gather up a team. And as much as I hate to bring it up, is there really any way to prevent cheating?

  37. Arylon on August 17th, 2008 7:46 pm

The racing idea is not a terribly original event (I’ve partaken in 3 or 4 in my WoW time), but a scavenger hunt on an RP server would be a laugh. Requiring teams of 5 is a bit restrictive though – teams of 2-5 would get a much better response, I expect.

Anyway, being British, getting into American servers is a lot of hassle, so organising 5 people becomes nearly impossible. I voted for the scavenger hunt (or would have if your spelling wasn’t so schizophrenic) regardless since it’s a damn sight more original, creative and difficult to pull off.

  38. twww on August 17th, 2008 8:02 pm

Sounds like it would be fun although I, like many, would have trouble fielding a team of 5.
Unfortunately family plans interfere (%*$#^@ in-laws).

  39. Zaw on August 17th, 2008 8:20 pm

Can’t come up with a team, sigh. Hunt sounds wonderful. Was planning on sneaking in teamless and /cheer loudly to competitors.

  40. Schtaina on August 17th, 2008 8:51 pm

You forgot the “Doesn’t have WoW US installed” option! (otherwise I’d force at least 9 people from my guild to join too)

  41. Just another hunter on August 17th, 2008 9:52 pm

I voted that I’d only attend if it is a race, but that is only sort of true. I like the scavenger hunt idea- but like many others, I would have trouble getting a group of friends together to participate and pugging it may or may not work well(especially divvying up prizes).

You’re creative, is there a way you could revamp the event for solo rather than group competition without making it just a race?

  42. Ludus on August 17th, 2008 11:00 pm

I for one have already created a baby orc on the server and he’s just sitting there, in front of the initial quest giver, waiting for the event.

I won’t be fielding a team, but that shouldn’t stop me from being able to run amok and taking screens when I can. Heck, I think just running around taking tourist snaps of all the Bloodmoon Chosen would be a hoot.

  43. Anotherclown on August 18th, 2008 12:11 am

=P I had to change my vote. Unfortunately due to living in drastically different time zone I’ll be raiding instead. It’s a progression night so 9pm AEST just isn’t feasible for me. Happy Hunting to those that attend though.

  44. fearstalker on August 18th, 2008 12:59 am

    Race, or solo scavenger hunt….

  45. The Wild One on August 18th, 2008 2:08 am

I would be happy to show up and race, even in a raid group with 39 other people, as long as it’s not a “the team is moar important” type event.

I’ll be blunt: My first toon wasn’t a hunter. But, my main IS. See, I -like- solo play and not having to depend on people that are either not going to be up to task or are going to be holding me to an impossible standard.

Frankly, the real reason I rolled a hunter was never to raid, or party, or even be in a major city if I could avoid it. It was to disappear into the wilds for days on end, and not come back unless I absolutely needed to. I wound up in a raiding guild by accident, and I’m not in it anymore for a reason.

I’m not trying to be rude, it’s very late an I’m tired, so if I’m coming across as such, I apologize.

I also tend to not make much sense and ramble a lot when I’m tired, which I’ve probably done right here and don’t even know it.

    Also, sweatsocks.

    I don’t know why.

    Just… sweatsocks.

EDIT: Aww, poop. I was walking to my bedroom, and looked at the calendar on the way. I have a wedding to go to (not mine), and if I don’t, the wife will repo my naughty bits (yes mine).

  46. Geegolly on August 18th, 2008 4:36 am

I hate depending on others that I don’t know. That is why I hate PUGs, and that is why I don’t run many instances. LOL

I’d rather sit on my comffy server farming with kitty.

Now a race…yea that would be fun!!

  47. Jbz on August 18th, 2008 6:30 am

Yea, I really want to go, however finding friends of mine that will show up for sure is the difficult part.

I’ll show up either way and send sexual advances your way BRK. ;)
