You’ve Got It Wrong, WoWHead

BRK » 24 August 2008 » In Pets, WotLK » 36 Comments

Note: WoWHead shows Broodmother on the east side of the cave. Wrong-o. We’d submit a fix… but WoWHead’s WotLK Mac client isn’t working yet. /shame!

But anyway.

A hunter has always been able to tame any tamable-beast that is at or below the hunter’s level. In the WotLK beta, if the pet is more than five levels below the hunter, the pet automatically levels-up to be precisely five-levels below the hunter. For example, if you’re a level 70 hunter and have never tried a gorilla, you can go to STV, tame a level 40 gorilla, and he’ll jump up to level 65. You can try him against content your level to determine if he’s a pet you’re interested in keeping or not.

We approve.

The other half of this equation is Loyalty; it’s gone. When you tame that level 40 gorilla and he jumps to level 65, he is a full-65. He is not a level 65 pet with Rank 1 Loyalty. You don’t have to run amok with him for a day or two to make him a “real” level 65 pet.

Again, we approve.

But this has another benefit; the trade-in value of your old pet has skyrocketed!

You’re level 65 and have a level 65 cat-pet. You ding, you’re level 66. Grats! Now you can start earning experience points for your cat and get him to level 66 as well.

Or, you could Abandon your level 65 cat and tame a new level 66 cat. That would save you lots of leveling time, yes? You bet it would.

But the problem is that, in Burning Crusade, the game says, “OK Chester, you gimme your level 65 cat with his Rank 6 Loyalty, and I’ll give you a level 66 cat with a Rank 1 Loyalty. Deal or no deal?”

No deal, foshizzle. Loyalty-leveling both sux and blows! /bolt

But in the WotLK beta, that deal totally changes!

“OK Chester, you gimme your level 65 cat… and I’ll give you a level 66 cat. No Loyalty penalty, just a fair trade. How about that?”

No Loyalty-leveling? That’s a Total Deal! /swap

Sounds good, doesn’t it? You bet!

We’ve been running around like crazy, trying every new pet class we can find. We really like the Moth. We have a level 69 moth from Netherstorm that we tamed while we were level 70. We went Ding a day or so ago and wanted to jack our Moth up to 70. Takes a while, yes it do.

But hey, Mania says there’s a level 71 Moth in the Tundra we can tame. It’s white, and that’s fine with us. So we boogie’d on out to the Tundra, found the white Moth – see our rant at the top of this post – and Abandoned our level 69 Moth. We dropped a Freezing Trap, tamed the level 71 Moth, and blamo! Two levels of pet-experience grinding wiped out in a few minutes.

Does this little trick work with any other pets? You bet it does! Like Devilsaurs!

You’re level 70, you hop on over to Un’goro, and tame yourself an elite Devilsaur. Bam, he’s level 65. Stomp around with him in Northrend for a bit, and then you ding 71. Grats. Now turbo-walk to Netherstorm and grab a big hung of level 71 Tyrantus! Six pet-experience levels obliterated. /cheer!

See how this works? Good.

Is this discussion causing you to start to do some research of your own at WoWHead and Petopia? It should.

It sounds totally awesome! Only thing is, not liking the new wolf skins, I would go back for an old world wolf, if I were looking for one, but that is just a personal preference thing. Looks count, the only reason I haven’t had a bear for years is because I can’t stand their mouths hanging open all the time.

BTW, speaking of bears, Mania lists the Arctic Grizzly Cub as tamable. Seriously! Does this tame with the same skin as a usable pet? Because I will so get one!

Certainly, I am happy that there are now high level crabs, because I love the red crab, and if I want to grab one, I can get a level 69 in Northrend, and shave off 4 levels anyway!

  2. kunukia on August 24th, 2008 11:34 am

Oh! I found the answer about bear cubs on Mania’s Arcania. Yea, bear cub for the win!

Hey BRK! Great job on the beta stuff! Does the auto-pet-leveling work on pets in the stable? ie, does that 65 RFK pig turn 66 when you ding 71? Thanks! Again, great job!

  4. BRK on August 24th, 2008 11:49 am

does that 65 RFK pig turn 66 when you ding 71?

No. Pets only auto-level when you tame them.

  5. Felandra on August 24th, 2008 11:55 am

I would say this change is best for those ’special’ skins you want.

Say the Ghost Saber. Getting it to 70 from 20 is a pretty tough task. Now it is much easier. Does take te effort out of it though… So I’m not entirely happy, but I guess overall it is a good thing.

  6. Pike on August 24th, 2008 12:05 pm

I do like it overall, though I gotta admit, I get far too attached to my pixels to trade them in >.>

  7. WINTER on August 24th, 2008 12:25 pm

Call me silly, but as a Horde I realllllllyyyy want to tame a flight path gryphon. You gotta admit that would be a rocking cool pet.

come on blizz.. let me go into a town and steal the gryphons..
    please please please

Throw away pets really aren’t my playstyle,, but too each his own.

  9. Shardik on August 24th, 2008 1:20 pm

Try the Mac Wowhead client again – I loaded it up a few days ago for some live server play and it found an update to 1.1, downloaded it, and good to go! It automatically finds your Beta install folder too, so it’s real easy to use.

  10. Teldra & Oni on August 24th, 2008 1:26 pm

Well that’s great – except for my Ghostwolf that isn’t tamable anymore.

  11. Athryn on August 24th, 2008 1:46 pm

As of this morning it’s working correctly (prolly because of my data upload.) I added a comment to clarify where she is. ;)

  12. Corwyn on August 24th, 2008 2:15 pm

So not only is pet loyalty gone, but apparently so is hunter loyalty. A shame in my opinion.

  13. kunukia on August 24th, 2008 2:28 pm

“So not only is pet loyalty gone, but apparently so is hunter loyalty. A shame in my opinion.”

Well…it depends on how you are inside. Previously the game forced loyalty. Now it is up to the player. The big question is, will BRK abandon Hobbes?

  14. Ironchin on August 24th, 2008 2:32 pm

“The big question is, will BRK abandon Hobbes?”

If he did i would be heart broken. :(

  15. The Wild One on August 24th, 2008 2:48 pm

    Here’s a thought, though:

Previously, loyalty required you to keep your pet happy, which was accomplished through feeding.

If loyalty is gone, does that mean we no longer need to cart extra food around for our pets? How does that work now?

  16. Anonymous on August 24th, 2008 3:28 pm

wow just wow, maybe you are really a warlock at heart.
I really hope they put something in to replace the existing loyalty system. I am pretty sure I read in a blue post somewhere that they were thinking about it

  17. The Lords Breed on August 24th, 2008 3:46 pm

“If loyalty is gone, does that mean we no longer need to cart extra food around for our pets? How does that work now?”

You’ll still want to feed your pet for happiness reasons. Once a pet reached level 6 loyal, you never had to feed it again, it would never run away, but you would lose lose the 50% DPS loss ( 75% mad, 100% sad, 125% glad ) if you did not feed it.

Now, with talents ( Carrion Feeder, Bloodthirty ) you’ll have to feed your pet less to maintain your 50% DPS gain from mad to glad, but you’ll not be in danger of your pet running away because you’re too cheap to buy fruit.

Also, all ‘trouble to feed’ pets have had their diets tweaked to be more easily fed.

Raid with a pet that eats bread, and your woes are waned. Mana Biscuit my Bear? Nom nom nom.

  18. kunukia on August 24th, 2008 3:47 pm

    @ The Wild One:

No, from what I understand, you still have to feed them to keep them happy, and that of course affects how much damage they do.

  19. Sid on August 24th, 2008 3:55 pm

um, we get it? no need to repeat the same thing like 5 times in a post!

  20. kunukia on August 24th, 2008 4:08 pm

@ Sid, if you will notice, we posted almost simultaneously.

  21. Azlen on August 24th, 2008 4:33 pm

What about pets we have now (like Humar at level 23 in my stable).. do they become 65 when the expansion hits?

  22. Sannu on August 24th, 2008 4:47 pm

I have one question. Do the pets have training points already spent on the skills they know? For example, is it more effective, training point-wise to tame an owl which has screech and bite instead of owl not having either?

  23. BRK on August 24th, 2008 5:02 pm

“The big question is, will BRK abandon Hobbes?”

Never. In the beta, where we need all the slots we can to test all the pets, yes, Hobbes was release back to Winterspring. But when WotLK comes out, Hobbes will be retained and leveled. He’s family.

  24. kunukia on August 24th, 2008 6:21 pm

“Never. In the beta, where we need all the slots we can to test all the pets, yes, Hobbes was release back to Winterspring. But when WotLK comes out, Hobbes will be retained and leveled. He’s family.”

    Yay!!

  25. Sid on August 24th, 2008 7:16 pm

    @ kunukia,

Sorry, was not meant for you. I was talking about BRK’s post.

  26. BRK on August 24th, 2008 7:53 pm

no need to repeat the same thing like 5 times in a post!

Actually, there is. Which is why we do it.

  27. Marathonian on August 24th, 2008 8:20 pm

I will be keeping my bat.I’ve had her through thick and thin since level 11.No way am I ever dropping her.

My tanking bear got me through several quests against casters that my bat just couldn’t handle. He stays too.

But luckily,we get more than two pets in WotLK.I’m still getting a Chimaera as my new pet.

  28. Melian on August 24th, 2008 9:45 pm

Boo! Hiss! Real beast masters never abandon! Or trade in their pets just because there’s a higher level one that saves you some time. And you DID abandon Hobbes so you could play with others. Did you at least go to Frostsaber Rock and release him there?

Semi-serious, of course ;-) But my cat and me, we’re a pair. She’s the pet I tamed at level 10 on Azuremyst Isle, and we have a long history. Any other pet is just not the same :-)

  29. Chromaoran on August 24th, 2008 11:47 pm

    Question Time!

    Pet dies in battle.
Pet gets battle rez from hunter.
    Pet is somewhat unhappy.
Is there now a way of getting back to that 125% damage happy pet while still in battle?

  30. Rotseh on August 25th, 2008 4:22 am

    Yes, there is.

With a Ferocity pet, this talent:
    Bloodthirsty (Rank 2)

With a Cunning pet, this talent:
    Carrion Feeder

Tenacity pets are currently out of luck.

  31. Nikabrik on August 25th, 2008 1:01 pm

So what happens if pre WOTLK I tame Humar who is lvl 23 and then put him into my stables until WOTLK. Will he automatically jump to 65 once I install the xpac or does this only apply to “new” pets gained once the xpac is installed?

  32. Deadrabit on August 25th, 2008 2:04 pm

An interesting evil thought. about taming.

What is to stop someone in a raid taming a beast that is trash mob on the pull and then releasing it after the fight is done to do it on the next trash mob.

Right now I can’t think of too many instance where there are beast one example would be WC have all that Dino goodness.

As for hunter loyalty I am loyal to Dinglebarry he was my first pet that I tamed at level 10. he is retired into the stables now, but with Wrath I can release DeadCat back into the mountains of Tekkar Forest and put Dingle back into full service. along with a Gorilla and Moth and and …

  33. draiggoch on August 26th, 2008 4:54 am

So suddenly all those ‘rare’ skins some have worked hard to win will become a tad pointless.

Any Hunter can pop along and pick one up.

Welcome to the Hunters’ Throw Away Society

    /rareskinnerfed

    Shame

  34. Theaah on August 27th, 2008 11:33 pm

The work you put in to get and level up a rares skin animal before WotLK is no less special when anyone can go out and get it easily at level 70.

They did not do the work to level with it, or to level it up from whatever low level when they where 70. (I did this with a rare skin windserpent once. It was about a week of grinding to get him from 49 to 70.)

The other side of that is, if people were too lazy to go and get a rare skin while leveling or level one up at 70, chances are they’re not going to be so inclined to go out and have to level one up even 5 levels, let alone camp a spawn point or run through AQ40.

Rare skin pets may become more common, but that doesn’t make yours any less special. And wouldn’t it be nice to see a variety of pets around the major city instead of the same skin/family beside every hunter you see?

    As to the post itself:

I don’t like the idea of trading in pets just to avoid some leveling time. I personally get very attached to my pets and will, come WotLK, either level them up from 65/70 or wait until I’m 80 to tame the new pets I’d like and just level them up from there. Similarly while I hope that cats get a more useful family ability, I will not be abandoning my Ophelia. (She’s an orange tiger and I’ve had her since level 30. She was one of the main reasons I rolled a hunter. When my husband was trying to convince me to play WOW all he had to say was that I could have a pet tiger and I was sold.)

Of all the great news you have brought to my greedy little eyes BRK i can honestly say this is the first thing that just plain SUCKS!!

Where has that special bond between Hunter and pet gone? That sense of achivement when your pet becomes your best friend?
Whats the point of going though all the pets on petopia to find that special pet for you when any huntard can tame one and have it instantly become his best friend?

I can live with the automatic level increase but not this. Gaining loyalty is not hard if you bring plenty of food and remember to feed your pet.

But most of all i will miss laughing at the hutards who suddenly exclaim in the middle of a PUG “OMG my pet just ran away!!” ;)

  36. ailysee on August 29th, 2008 5:42 pm

Hi, i was wondering how the pet training points worked, are they gone do u get them or what? i curently havea cat i leveld from lvl 8 has a like 300 something training points worth trading in in wotlk?
also have u tried one of those thundering kodos in the barrens?
