BRK Podcast, Episode Two

BRK » 07 September 2008 » In Podcast »

You want it, you got it: Episode Two is done.

We’ve pinged the iTunes Store, but we don’t know how long it takes for that to update. You can listen on the sidebar, or even download the mp3 here. It’s much bigger than last time; it’s probably the orchestra.

/exhausted

Podcasting is serious bidness!

Edit: Two words. Com. Ment.

C’mon folks, we need feedback. I liked X, I didn’t like Y. You should talk more about Z. How are we supposed to get better if we don’t know these things?

    Great opener! ;)

LoLoLoL, OK, I have just listened to your intro, and it is hysterical.
I can’t breath, I am laughing so hard. As a person who saw 2001, A Space Odyssey in theaters when I was…19 or 20 years old, it was the first modern SciFi flick, it was just so huge back then, and seriously, I was NOT one of the ones smoking dope, although, you could not help breathing it in, because so many were, anyway, it was just iconic for the era, and I love it so much it brings back such memories of that time…

I am babbling? Really? Be right back, need snacks…

  3. Erhnam on September 7th, 2008 8:10 pm

Another great podcast BRK, keep up the good work.

hysterically funny intro! I have a frost mage….

  6. kunukia on September 7th, 2008 8:42 pm

The podcast was excellent also. Very good, and funny.

  7. Khaled on September 7th, 2008 8:43 pm

iTunes store does not need confirmation for new episodes, just edit the feed://www.bigredkitty.net/podcast.xml file and it will be fine :)

I do suggest using feedburner, could make it easier to manage later on

Wow … WP thought that was SPAM, how odd ..

You are a good thing happening to intelligence itself, let alone WOW.

Are you a Gators fan, or Noles fan?

I just want to say, I have never, ever laughed so hard as I did during your intro. You, sir, have my vote for Hunter of the Year.

  11. Killerguppy on September 8th, 2008 1:00 am

Hilarious opening! “How to combat huntards?” “Big. Red. Kitty.”

  12. Koinushu on September 8th, 2008 2:22 am

Already 2 minutes in and loving it, happy to say I have no need to roll a mage or have a nice tall glass of shut up juice!

  13. Rilgon Arcsinh on September 8th, 2008 3:26 am

“Why is that?” Because Blizzard hates Marksmen. :(

Well, I really can’t say that, given the changes we’re getting in Beta. :)

  14. Rua on September 8th, 2008 4:31 am

“Frost Mages. They’ll just as soon rip you off as look at you.”

    I’d complain, but it’s true. =(

  15. Priest on September 8th, 2008 5:15 am

I LOVE the new Intro. The old intro was pretty darned funny, but the new intro is far more Epic, with a capitol E and I’d make it purple if I knew how.

    The cure for huntards… big… red… KITTY.

  16. Boozsha on September 8th, 2008 8:31 am

Good stuff! Keep’em coming. This will turn into a Sunday night routine for me.

  17. Cielidor on September 8th, 2008 8:32 am

That was great BRK, and it’s always fun having my voice in it. =P Keep ‘em comin’!

  18. Rose on September 8th, 2008 11:46 am

Great podcast! and I totally agree with your sentiment of raiding for fun and to see content. I only recently started raiding and I jsut did my first 25 last night after listening to your podcast. Not with the intention to be full t6 before the expansion but to see as much as I can see before moving on to northrend in a few months :).

  19. Elegabal on September 8th, 2008 1:01 pm

That intro is awesome! Same goes for the content - your take on the reason to keep raiding is spot-on. As usual with your site and now the podcasts - uniformly excellent.

One quibble, though: I’m not a fan of the background music/sounds. It ends up distracting to me and makes it that much harder to focus, particularly when doing something else while listening, such as, for example, WoW.

  20. Tes on September 8th, 2008 1:33 pm

Loved it. Especially the intro. Content was good, sound quality was good. Or as I like to call it, “Hunterific”. <..>

One problem though: I’m not sure about the background music yet. Just a wee bit distracting.

  21. Eliyen on September 8th, 2008 1:44 pm

Excellent as usual! Loved the intro, very epic. I don’t care for the background music either - it’s definitely distracting.

Overall, excellent production, good content, and entertaining enough to even keep this Druid’s attention.

    FOSHIZZLE!

  22. Bombcar on September 8th, 2008 2:27 pm

I’ve not heard this one, but in the last podcast your “sotto voice” was too low to be heard distinctly, so I had to keep turning the volume up and down to compensate. It should be possible to speak in an “aside” without getting softer or closer to the microphone.

Secondly; if you stop using “we” it means you’re abandoning Hobbes and pets and should just re-roll as a rogue. :p

  23. Alegion on September 8th, 2008 2:33 pm

Love the intro! Background music either needs to go or be toned down though imo. Its distracting and makes it hard to hear you sometimes.

  24. Allarr on September 8th, 2008 2:37 pm

Ok, so I guess you want better comments than “I just want to say, I have never, ever laughed so hard as I did during your intro. You, sir, have my vote for Hunter of the Year.”

So here it is. The intros are great, and I hope you continue to change them around as time goes on. I know it would be a lot more work on your part, but variety is the spice of life.

Keep tangentizing (great word, by the way) it keeps the information entertaining. If you have something specific to say, then say it, but also talk about everything else that touches on that, as well. It’s what makes this a podcast with entertainment value, rather than just a newscast on what is in the patch.

I know you aren’t going to go test on Dr. Boom (or the test dummy’s) just yet, but talk more about your specific experiences with specific shots on specific mobs in specific instances (individual events, not actual instanced dungeons), and how it looks as far as dps, mana efficiency, and taking agro from your pet. This stuff is very interesting to me.

And don’t sacrifice the videos for the podcast! The videos are your bread and butter!

    To Elegabal and Tes:
I think the plan is to present the podcast in a such a manner to imagine it actually being recorded in Ironforge. Could you imagine Ironforge being a quite place, with drunken dwarves running all over the place? I think the background sounds are perfect.

  25. Jamison on September 8th, 2008 3:56 pm

Good job on this one. I think your comments on raiding for the sake of seeing content is a great thing. A bunch of us on Moonrunner have even gone a step further. Most of us came on post-BC, so we never even saw some of the old world instances. Since some of them are going away now and raiding is slowed slightly we’re taking the time to go back and do some memorable moments from pre-BC. For example, over the past few days the amount of people doing the Onxyia quest where you unmask her in Stormwind has increased a lot, in fact two friends and I just did it last night. Are we going to start trying to raid Onxyia’s Lair? Probably not, but this is a quest that is slated to disappear in the next patch and we wanted to experience a piece of WoW history (plus, 3-manning BRD with a prot pally, a holy priest and resto druid both doing DPS was a TON of fun).

I think we’re also going to try and get a group together to at least hit through some of the trash in Naxx just to say we “saw” it.

So this time can also be a good time to hit up some of the old pre-BC places as well as the fancy new Sunwell stuff :).

  26. Aboo on September 8th, 2008 4:08 pm

    Point of Order:
Rogues can wipe their threat with Vanish and continue dps’ing as well. :)

Hunters have a small advantage from MD (at the moment) so they can go wide-open from the start. Rogues must ramp up to avoid pulling that aggro :)

  27. Mephator on September 8th, 2008 10:31 pm

Suggestion? Post a table of contents detailing the sections of your podcast.

  28. Siobhann on September 8th, 2008 11:10 pm

The intro was hilarious! You had me laughing out loud.

The comparison between BM and MM DPS was very interesting. I’ll be curious to see how BM and MM scale in WotLK. It almost sounds like good MM hunters will be running DoTimers.

Mailbox Q and A session is very good.

I’m still finding the yelling and laughing in the background rather distracting.

  29. Tamarlane on September 8th, 2008 11:32 pm

I love the podcasts, but as someone a bit newer to Wow (like 2 months new), a bit less upcoming content and a bit more of the “old” stuff would be great! Beyond that, GREAT podcast, funny, entertaining and intelligent. Thanks!

  30. Soulkill on September 8th, 2008 11:50 pm

Good 2nd cast. Loved that new intro. Like others said the background yelling and laughing is getting distracting, found myself concentrating on that not what you were saying.

    Can’t wait till next week.

  31. Geegolly on September 9th, 2008 2:03 am

haha!! “if you are still a huntard after listening to this, go roll a mage”

  32. Zorro on September 9th, 2008 3:52 am

I know WoTLK is pretty news-worthy at the moment but a few more here and now items would be good and maybe a bit on enhancing skills or techniques would be useful too. Keep the joke interludes coming too and I like the public contributions through voice acting as well. I would’ve sent something but didn’t know til too late. Hope there will be another opportunity.

  33. Heather on September 9th, 2008 8:41 am

Please, please, please turn down/off the background music and noise. It’s so distracting and not needed. Good job otherwise BRK.

  34. Iru the Hunter on September 9th, 2008 9:20 am

BRK! Love that Episode 2! It’s in my itunes libary and props are going your way now. I actually like the background noise of the bar, so I hate to see it go away. Maybe a touch lower if it bothers to many people. (see Heather’s post)

For the Horde! I know we are marked enemies, but you still make me laugh out loud BRK! Great Stuff.

  35. Weezoh on September 9th, 2008 10:10 am

The background needed to be a little lower this time around I think; your delivery is very good but when you hit lows in your cadence you sometimes fade under the volume of the background. The biggest problem (imo) with podcasting is that the natural tendency is to start at a volume level say for example 8 and then as people talk it lowers down 6 — 4 then when something funny or important comes up it spikes to 10. The problem with this is that as you’re listening on your commute for example, you have to keep turning up the volume as the speaker gets lower, then they hit that 10 with a laugh or emphasized point and BAM irreversible hearing damage.

You’re doing a good job for the most part on avoiding the explosive parts, but your cadence does dip down pretty low sometimes and the ducking doesn’t seem to compensate.

Overall I like the brewfest background though, just maybe lower level.

  36. Korbn on September 9th, 2008 10:55 am

    superb work BRK !!!!

best hunter blog and best hunter podcast !!!

keep doing whatever you do …. ;)

  37. Stupid Mage on September 9th, 2008 1:31 pm

I like the background noise and music.

It makes the presentation more immersive, like BRK the Dwarf is actually talking to us, rather than Airman Howell.

    Appreciate all your efforts.

    Thanks!

  38. Asar on September 9th, 2008 1:46 pm

Loved the broadcast. You touched on so many topics, there was something for everyone. The way that you reveal the various shadings of this game and the many ways of reaping enjoyment from playing it is very refreshing.

I also liked the brewfest background and found it enhancifying.

Listening to a “radio show” that excluded environmental sound would be much less interesting.

    Keep up the great work.

O.T. Love the Airman Howell stories as well.

  39. i3arracuda on September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm

Loved the intro. Would like to see you use one with the Superman: The Movie theme, too. The background music is a bit distracting. I like the fact that there is background music, I’m just not sold on the current music.

You should also host a brief segment outlining the concerns that other, lesser classes have towards Hunters from their point-of-view. This would give an opportunity to provide a counter-argument towards common Hunter stereotypes and misconceptions. Perhaps theme the segment with background music pertinent to each class. For example, when I think of Mages, I think of the sad piano music from the end-credits of the Incredible Hulk TV-series.

Just a thought. Great blog, great podcast. Keep it up.

  40. ngthagg on September 9th, 2008 4:19 pm

Other than some variation in your speaking volume (I got the impression it was from changing the distance to the mike), the podcast is great. I’m glad you gave some numbers on when to use Feign Death (when you hit 85-95% of the tanks threat). I understand the theory of preemptive FD, but having a number means I can actually apply the theory to real life raiding.

  41. Freklic on September 9th, 2008 8:53 pm

BRK, my main is a rogue, but I have a hunter that is level 62. You have inspired me to level him and your videos, podcasts, and other informative discussions on this blog have helped me out tremendously and I can’t thank you enough for opening my eyes to MQoSRDPS.

As specifically for the podcast. I liked everything you discussed, the gold beggars made me lol for real.

PLEASE do not get rid of the background chatter and music. It makes your podcast seem very authentic. And, since my hunter and rogue are both dwarves, it makes me feel like I’m having fun in IF.

    Keep up the great work!

  42. Josh on September 10th, 2008 2:56 pm

Please switch your I-tunes uploads to MP3 format, I have a Creative Zen and it does not play the format you are currently using, other than that the podcast is very informative, currently encouraging other hunters to listen

Yes I copied this from my other post

    Very entertaining podcast tho

  43. Anonymous on September 10th, 2008 4:48 pm

I love the podcast but for the love of God please stop referring to yourself as “We.” It is driving me CRAZY

  44. Kromgred on September 11th, 2008 8:44 am

    Great podcast and all BUT,

does it not bother anyone else that he is saying that a hunter is the best singeltarget dps in the game? Get your facts right, the hunters are good but in t6+ gear rouges and locks outdps hunters in almost all cases.

    Sry about the spelling.

  45. Loa on September 22nd, 2008 11:07 pm

Kromgred: I think the point is that even if rogues and locks can do more DPS, they are still generally limited by the threat the tank can generate. Hunters aren’t.

Very cool podcast: Just found it after recommendation from a friend.
Just a point of order about what you say about the worm’s Acid spit skill and Sunder armour:
Sunder armour reduces armour, but it also causes high threat as a separate function. Other effects that reduce armour like Acid spit likely won’t cause the high threat. The worm may well be able to hold the aggro like a Warrior, but it’ll be Growl doing the work, not acid spit.

  46. Ryliss on October 1st, 2008 5:57 pm

BRK, LOVE YOUR PODCAST. Just found your blog and started listening to your podcasts. Love all the hunter goodness.

Like the background sounds, but can you turn down the music just a little? I don’t want to miss all your info and the brewfest in the background is distracting. Maybe it’s the guys talking behind your voice.

    Great vids too. Corehound! Wow!
