BRK WotLK Gorilla Movie

BRK » 21 September 2008 » In Movie, Pets, WotLK » 54 Comments

Gorillas? Gorillas!

Thunderstomp, totally revamped. Only a ten-second cooldown means it can boom-boom-boom!

Volley, totally revamped. No cooldown at all, and we can Auto Shot during the channeling!

Thunderstomp + Volley = AoE Tank-n-Spank, foshizzle.

Please feel free to download the YouTube version (53MB) by right-clicking here, and the full-sized version (168MB) here.

    Wasn’t kidding was I? =D

Now go into Strath or something, show us what he can really do.

  2. Thaumaturgos on September 21st, 2008 8:56 pm

Nice movie BRK. Thanks for that. I am SO looking forward to FIVE pets and being able to be our very own tank ‘n spank machine. This showed it very nicely. TYVVVM

  3. Allarr on September 21st, 2008 9:02 pm

Oh man, this makes me excited. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’ll nerf thunderstomp though. Shame.

  4. Lee on September 21st, 2008 9:23 pm

Hasn’t thunderstomp always been his affective? I have a 70 hunter, but also leveling a bloodelf hunter and she has a gorilla from Ungoro, and it is awesome how it auto grabs those mobs of me.

Love the movie, as always! :-)

  5. Rua on September 21st, 2008 9:36 pm

“Hasn’t thunderstomp always been this affective?”

    Thunderstomp: Live
    Cooldown: 1 min

    Thunderstop: Beta
Cooldown: 10 seconds (7 seconds talented through Longevity)

    No, no it hasn’t =/

I’m excited about all the pets
Gorilla never really did it for me but to see a hunter tanking and dps’ing is pretty cool.. (even if it is on outdated and underleveled content)

  6. icedtrip on September 21st, 2008 9:36 pm

I love the fact that I tamed Uhc’Loc (the white gorilla) back when I was in my 50’s. I love the guy (his name is Mogwai), but I will certainly love him more with this buff to TS. Although TS has always been nice, the cooldown on it currently blows. This is excellent news!

Now, if only Blizzard keeps it as it is.

  7. DarkSentinel on September 21st, 2008 10:11 pm

You should give BM trash a try ;) It’d be awesome to be able to clear it in a few brief hunter-dominated pulls.
Nice movie, but was hardly expecting anything less :P

  8. Sid on September 21st, 2008 10:27 pm

Woot, awesome! I want a gorilla!

A question about pet levels in WotLK – suppose I tame a gorilla and it gets to level 65 on taming. I then stable it and use another pet to level myself to 71. Will my gorilla automatically level to 66?

  9. Autumnn on September 21st, 2008 10:38 pm

I refuse to say I want a monkey. Even though that is a great vid I hate the way they scratch their butts. Even though they could be farming psychos they, um, eat weird foods. Dangit Ill try one.

  10. HunchbackNun on September 21st, 2008 10:49 pm

    BRK,

Sorry I couldn’t see…but were you letting Thunderstomp go off on auto or were you initiating it when and where you wanted?

  11. BRK on September 21st, 2008 10:53 pm

were you letting Thunderstomp go off on auto or were you initiating it when and where you wanted?

Both. It’s a beta and there are always bugs. Thunderstomp wasn’t always going off when we wanted, so we did a few casts manually. We have, of course, reported it.

  12. HunchbackNun on September 21st, 2008 11:34 pm

I noticed this as well. I’m on the PTR so I tried to recreate this as a 70 with “scaled” success. However Thunderstomp hardly ever went off on its on even though I had it clearly set to auto-cast. I turned off Smack (?) so I KNEW I would have enough focus and it still only went off about every 3-4 mob pulls.

Casting it myself worked…and Thunderstomp is a beautiful thing.

  13. Jotun & Tartarus on September 21st, 2008 11:56 pm

wow, im really considering getting a gorilla as a tanking pet when wotlk comes out!
what would u recommend brk? gorillas or bears?

  14. Cielidor on September 22nd, 2008 12:06 am

Holy crap that is awesome! They better not nerf that! It rocks! I can’t wait for WotLK to come out! I was just five-manning Kara on the PTR and BW is bugged – the Beast Within doesn’t activate with it! I SO reported that one.

  15. Aukato on September 22nd, 2008 12:41 am

Maybe I missed it but what was the snake buff that kept going off over BRK’s head?

  16. Banter on September 22nd, 2008 12:48 am

BRK I notice when you hit Beastial Wrath that you didn’t get its effect is there a bug or do you not have talent Beast Within?

  17. Safrienaer on September 22nd, 2008 2:26 am

Banter, it’s a bug. The Beast Within doesn’t seem to be working in Beta and PTR atm.

This made me really want to get a gorilla. But then I probably should get rid of my beautiful worm or bear… I don’t really need three tanking pets. :P The bear will probably be the loser, as a gorilla seems to tank multiple targets a lot better.

  18. Syltburken on September 22nd, 2008 5:22 am

are the ZA Amani bear trash mob trainable after patch ?

    Haha.. Gorillazzzz

IMO, they’re pretty fugly, but looks like they’re useful! :D

I’d be hard-pushed to stray away from my Night-Elf Huntard + Cat direction…. it just annoys people. Hahaha..

Still, as usual a GREAT video and awesome commentary.

    Thanks, BRK

  21. Euripedes on September 22nd, 2008 7:02 am

I’ve always loved the looks of Gorillas, and even have one on my hunter (never got it past level 54, the poor thing, kitty was just superior).

This is great news, especially considering the state cats are in…

  22. kunukia on September 22nd, 2008 7:15 am

My mid-40s Orc just picked up her gorilla, They are not my favorite pet looks-wise, but…

    Named him:

WotLK Beta Bug, don’t you just love it?

    preBC – Mainpet Dandan (Gorilla)
    BC – mainpet Dandan (Gorilla)
Wotlk – mainpet Dandan (Gorilla), Hooray!!!!!!!!!

  25. Fobok on September 22nd, 2008 9:55 am

Yep. As soon as 3.0 comes out, I’m getting myself a gorilla and starting the grind of levelling it to 70. (At least it’s only 5 levels instead of 30.)

  26. Hanhar on September 22nd, 2008 10:02 am

Man that is sweet, Never leave shat with out a hunter in your party, now on my list is a gorilla. I can only see this guy helping me tank in any instance. saweet.

My wife has one of these for her hunter level 40, and even with the one minute cool down it is sweet. can’t wait for it to go away. sweet movie

  27. torik on September 22nd, 2008 10:08 am

boy… the nerfbat is so coming on this one…

my guess -> dmg & aggro redue. or they just increase the cooldown again 30-45sec…

  28. Aaron on September 22nd, 2008 11:11 am

i has my shiny new gorillapet. Now the only question is, what do I name him?

  29. tha boy on September 22nd, 2008 12:26 pm

I Really like these movies :) keep ‘em coming :P

ROFL, between the gorilla grunts, orc grunts and wolf barks…

  32. gilss on September 22nd, 2008 2:44 pm

would it be possible to do this with a hunter that doesn’t have the T5 bonus?

  33. Clifdog on September 22nd, 2008 2:59 pm

I love the gorilla.. wish you could pick fruit to feed him though.. or he would eat fish.. then that would be awesome.. but I gotta say.. Love the idea of farming LBS in instances solo.. not having to roll on the damn loot.. that is sweet… or share.. LOL.. (greedy bastard alert)……

Also, on the request/suggestion of my GM i spec’d for surv to help the raid .. OMFG.. hated it.. felt like the no-armed man having to fight Chuck Liddel.. f’n sucked…

Spec’d back during a break during the raid.. back to a real spec.. BM.. have never looked back nor will I ever consider changing now.. woot.. go forth and kill shit..

  34. kunukia on September 22nd, 2008 3:03 pm

    @gilss

I was thinking this too. BRK, make some movies after taking OFF your T5 gear. Then we can see what kind of heals non-uber hunters will have to do.

  35. For the Pie on September 22nd, 2008 3:18 pm

The croc looks fun, but OMG the croc sound is annoying. And it’s CD is long.

I guess I need to get a gorilla pet now.

  36. Palladiamors on September 22nd, 2008 3:33 pm

For clarification, it is totally possible to solo Ramparts without T-5 or a gorilla, for that matter. *Laughs*

Second question, yes, if you level, then your stabled pets will auto level with you WHEN YOU REMOVE THEM from the stables. While in the stables the level will be their old level.

Finally, thunder stomp has never gone off against single targets. I noticed rhinos stampede will, but I haven’t tamed a gorilla to test theirs, may do that soon.

  37. Dave on September 22nd, 2008 3:59 pm

There is no way Thunderstomp will stay as is. They’ll have to nerf it or super buff other powers to compensate. I was going to go with a bear for tanking in WOTLK…I’ve always liked bears, and back in the day when all pets were basically the same, I always had a bear by my side.
    Eventually bears became nearly worthless.
Now with the WOTLK changes, they are again awesome tanks. Sure, their swipe doesn’t do the dmg that thunderstomp does, nor can it attack as often as the croc’s ability, but you could just leave it on as a focus dump and get a solid threat gain against multiple targets. In the long run it was a little more powerful than the gorilla or the croc.
If you compare the dmg of swipe and thunderstomp you’ll see a huge difference in dmg, while the focus cost and CD are the same…oh yeah, and thunderstomp hits more targets.
As is, they will have made the gorilla a default pet for everyone to have.

Ahh, who am I kidding, they’ll probably just give the cat a new tanking attack and claim it was always their plan to do so…bleh.

I’m starting to rant now, but geez…I’m a loyal BM hunter…was from day one, even through all the hunter hating/pet hating days. But for the first time in a long time I may stray from the path. The BM additions are weak and mostly fluff. I wonder if we’ll see guilds refusing to recruit BM spec’d hunters again?

  38. Ihumpedyourmom on September 22nd, 2008 4:50 pm

you can currentley auto shoot during volley just start auto shooting before u cast volley but the instant cast looks awsome

  39. Warcraft Mom on September 22nd, 2008 6:18 pm

I love my gorilla pet. Actually, I love Thunderstomp, even with the long cool down. I send the gorilla into a group, wait for the blue flash and then unload everything. And I just can’t pull aggro. It’s lovely. And this a million times better. Can’t wait.

  40. Anonymous on September 22nd, 2008 6:32 pm

Shame I gave up on my white gorilla for a scropid for arena. (That I’ve yet to use more then a handful of times) QQ

  41. Darksentinel on September 22nd, 2008 6:49 pm

Man I keep getting errors when I submit my comments, then I have to retype :S

@Dave: wowhead currently lists Swipe at 5 seconds cd, and Thunderstomp at 10, which my be situationally advantageous.

Anyone tested to see how the threat from Thunderstomp stacks up against SoC or Blizzard, or the like?

And why are some of the non-exotic tanking pets (Gorilla, Bear) better tanks (in terms of AOE threat generation) than their exotic counterparts? I don’t think healers will be happy with a Worm tank.

  42. okimoto on September 22nd, 2008 7:18 pm

Hey Brk what do u think the new best pvp pet will be for wotlk im full bm spec and im thinking either devilsaur, corehound or maybe moth would gorrilla be best because thunderstomp has such a short cool down

  43. Darksentinel on September 22nd, 2008 7:56 pm

    @okimoto
Consider a Chimaera. 50% snare for 5 seconds, on a 7 second cooldown.
Obviously a Corehound is awesome against non-melee Paladins and Shamans.
Rhino will be good, interupting spellcasts, giving you kiting room and it has the “oh gods, I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING, THERE’S A GIANT GREY THING COVERING MY SCREEN AND EATING MY FACE” effect (attach it to a healer, Stampede them out of sight of their target and see how long it takes them to notice), plus it’s a Tenacity pet for added Survivability.

That being said, BM is mostly a burst spec (or is in BC), so a high DPS pet might be best. I’d advocate the Chimaera, has decent damage, special ability to ignore armor mitigation and a very nice snare (between Frost Trap, Froststorm Breath, Wing Clip and Concussive Shot those silly warriors shouldn’t be going anywhere unless their Intercept cooldown is up).

Those are my thoughts anyway, I assume a lot of the pet skills still need to be balanced in terms of cooldown and damage.

  44. ngthagg on September 22nd, 2008 8:15 pm

“And why are some of the non-exotic tanking pets (Gorilla, Bear) better tanks (in terms of AOE threat generation) than their exotic counterparts?”

Because AoE tanking is mostly useful for speeding up grinding (so you can do multiple pulls). Against a boss-type enemy, the Worm (or perhaps the Rhino for interrupts) will allow superior DPS.

  45. Brian Johnson on September 22nd, 2008 8:21 pm

I -knew- there was some good reason that I was planning on taming a gorilla as my primary tenacity pet in WotLK…

By the way, for SV hunters, weaving Volley in during Explosive Shot’s cooldown looks like a viable option for even more AoE DPS :)

  46. Rokisha on September 22nd, 2008 8:47 pm

Thanks BRK I’ve wanted to see someone sort of Hunterpet instance tanking for a while. hmmm… i’m gunna try it

  47. Rixx on September 23rd, 2008 2:00 am

Ok ok, so my swipe data was incorrect, the fact remains though that the gorilla wipes out the bear, hands down.

    Bear: Swipe
    25 focus – 5 second CD
    hits 3 enemies for 60-84

    Gorilla: Thunderstomp
    25 focus – 10 second CD
hits all nearby enemies for 236-334 dmg

So Thunderstomp does roughly twice the damage for half the focus….oh yeah, and it can hit more targets…..oh, and don’t forget the extra threat generation…

I so wanted one of the new bears….now I need to get a stupid monkey….bleh.

Even if you double the swipe dmg, thunderstomp is much better. Quadrupal the dmg and double the CD….thunderstomp is still better. Quadrupal the dmg, double the CD, add a threat bonus….and swipe still loses out. That’s anything but balanced.

The most interesting thing for me in the expansion was going to be the wide variety of pets. Way back in the day I had a one of a kind pet…because no one else trained the thing. Everyone could follow their dream. Now it seems like 90% of hunters on my server (horde and alliance) have a cat….and 75% of them are the exact same cat model. They favored a certain pet, and everyone got it. I’d hate to see them do that again.

  48. Perkins and a cat named Mandu on September 23rd, 2008 5:14 am

I was planning on geting a rhino as soon as I got to Northrend but after watching this video I’m not so sure.
Red, what would you recommend as a BM’s tanking pet .. a rhino or a gorilla .. or maybe something else?

  49. Erhnam on September 23rd, 2008 7:27 am

I’ve been leveling Uhk’loc for a few months now and can tell you he never Thunderstomps unless there are 3 or more mobs in the pull.

    BRK,
Guess what we did? Hopped on the PTR, flew over to STV, tamed ourselves a brand new gorilla, foshizzle, and headed on over to Hellfire Citadel. And in less time than it would take us to get a PUG for the bloody thing we had Ramps cleared, closely followed by Blood Furnace. You know what the amazing part is? No T5! That’s right, with our level 65 gorilla we solo’d BC instances with no problem. Forget farming gold on the Plateau, we’re just gonna head to our nearest instance and have the place to ourselves. Mammoth mount, here we come!
    Sincerely,
    Driizzt and Wyvar of Shandris

Could you suggest some AOE type talents for a hunter if we are going to be specced for this exact type of playing. I’ve tried making a build myself but i don’t have a beta to test it out could you give me some recommendations or a link to your build during this video.
