Gorillas in the Ramparts

Gorillas are pretty sweet tanks.
1. Thunderstomp has only a 7-10 second cooldown, depending on your talent spec.
2. If one disables Smack, Thunderstomp and Growl do not consume Focus faster than a BM hunter can regenerate it.
3. Volley is channeled, and one cannot Arcane or Steady Shot while channeling, but one can use Auto Shot.
4. There is no cooldown for Volley.
5. A hunter’s two-piece Tier 5 bonus heals from Volley-damage.
6. A Tenacity pet, properly spec’d, gets a +50% bonus to healing.
As you can see from the screenshot, we solo’d Ramparts with our gorilla. Not the most incredible achievement ever, we know. But we just grabbed this gorilla from STV this morning. Go on your regular WoW server, tame a gorilla, level it to 69, and go solo Ramparts with it. Let us know how long it takes you.

hi mr brk
I have always been a fan of the gorrillas. So much so, I camped out in the cave of Un’goro for almost a week trying to capture the rare spawn in there. I finally got it and it was not easy. Because of his knock back and the fact that the traps would not last as long as the tame, I had to do a combo of fear beast and freeze trap in order to get the time needed to finish the channel.
Sad thing is that pre-patch 3.0, the gorrilla wasn’t a very viable pet to keep around, especially with the cool looking (and high DPS) armored wind serpents so my gorrilla was left alone at level 65.
I saw the changes made to them in beta/PTR and it encouraged me to go back and relevel my ape.
He is a bad mofo tank. So much so, I will be going MM and not BM when the patch goes live.
The gorrilla will have 3 ways to keep mobs off you. Intervene, Taunt and improved Growl have made sure I don’t get agro on me, even with some high damage frequent crits.
This is after I tamed and played around with many different exotic pets. None kept agro like the ape did. I suggest some of you rethink the need to get you a devilsaur or core hound.
No cooldown on Volley? That’s a nice change I didn’t know about.
So we can do some nice AoE with a paladin tank on trash… I like.
Personally, I got a Gorilla in STV in the mid-30s, and wasn’t very impressed, especially since post Un’Goro there are no new ranks of Thunderstomp.
But in LK I’ll definitely give one a try, although with their icky diets I might have to go find a polar bear.
Is a Rhino recommended for a BM hunter for levelling?
DarkSentinel:
If you spec your Gorilla for Guard Dog, then you will never really have to feed the pet.
Also, as of the lastest beta update, gorillas now eat bread as well as the fruit and fungus. So it’s not “too” picky of a eater.
I carry a couple stacks of them Naaru Rations from Quel’Danalanadingdong just in case I see a pet I’d like to tame in beta.
@Notvalvan: oh cool. I wasn’t too sure how the numbers from Guard Dog worked out.
A shame that Boars aren’t so useful anymore, I liked the way they were perfectly happy to eat Mystery Meat and old boots.
@Bergnarf: good idea. Will keep it in mind for when patch hits live.
There are also gorillas in Un’Goro crater and there is a red one and a white one that is rare…
I have had U’Cha from Un’Goro Crater since THE DAY I was old enough to tame him on my Hunter. I leveled with him all the way to 70! My guildmates laughed at us, oh how they laughed, because we would tank the Moroes fight… WITH A GORILLA. But we persisted. And he was called a vanity pet. And people told me to stop fooling around with our Hunter and get back on our Prot Pally main! And we were sad.
But we said one day, the Gorillas would have their revenge! The Day of the Gorilla is upon us.
In live WoW, I have a cat, a gorilla, and a bat. My only rule with my pet was to never ever get rid of my Gorilla.
And now, it all pays off. As much as I love my beta rhino, I think he can take a number behind U’Cha.
Whatever Metal. I do not like the other 2 specs. I’m definitely getting an Epic Devilsaur!
.
In my opinion, if it doesn’t eat meat, I’m not planning on using it. I’ve got 2 cats right now, and plan on getting a winterspring bear once the PTR hits, for the odd tank job here and there.
I tried out a gorilla, and while it was neat, it didn’t quite fit my play style, and the food requirements were a bit harsh, when my other pets were cats.
Has anyone gone full 51 point BM on the PTR? How brutal is it on focus regen and general DPS? I’m spec’d in MM to aimed shot, with go for the throat, etc., but not any farther. I don’t want to lose those skills yet, because I’m sure I’ll take a brutal overall DPS and Pet Focus regen hit.
I may go back and try a gorilla, once bread works for them, since I tend to carry around the naaru/sunwell stuff, and the mag’har stuff drops all over the place too.
I’m also looking forward to a devilsaur wandering around behind me and scaring the crap outta the bad guys.
You can auto shot while volley currently that’s nothing new, you just have to be attacking a target with auto before you start volley
Heya all
I have been thinking abaut the 2k crits from Thunderstomp.
blizz will never let us keep that so i wont get to excited abaut gorila yet because i think in the near future we are looking at a mayor nerf.
Sorry for spelling not native speaker.
I just finished Ramps in Beta too, using the Gorilla.
Well, Thunderstomp damage is way too high, which makes me not trust this will be permanent.
Remember Chimaeras 30.000 crits? Ok, I know Thunderstomp is very far from that, but anyway… I hope then we finally got this alternative, other than “normal tanks”.
I also AOE farmed in Black Temple Illidari guys, worked great. It is your personal paladin-prot.
Before even seeing this post on your site I solod ramparts on the PTR (meaning I was level 70) with a 65 bear. I wanted to see how a pet tanking spec was so I took the health/armor/dodge talents and specced my bear and went down to ramps. I don’t have two pieces of T5 and it was still extremely easy. The only challenging part was the final boss who I had to attempt twice. I solod BF with a 66 gorilla and it was fantastic. I can only imagine how easy it would be if I could get another piece of T5.
That cooldown on thunderstomp is awesome. I have been waiting 3 years for them to lower it.
The 1 minute cooldown was just ridiculous, OK for adds but no aoe tanking.
I don’t mind if they lower the damage, as long as it causes a lot of threat.
So q at you BRK do you expect Thunderstomp to get nerfed in dmg, i sure do.
Hasnt stoped me from taming and now lvling my own Gorila for my Grinding plesures.
I had tamed a gorilla once upon a time while I was levelling in Un’goro and I levelled him to 70 but eventually abandoned him once I started raiding and loaded up my stable with dps pets. He was named Homer (immediately after naming him I came up with a better one, Qwyjibo). With these changes to the gorilla, I will finally be able to have Qwyjibo again.

Hi BRK,
I’m excited to see what a gorilla pet can do! I’ve had mine since level 32 and took him up to 70. Just like in RL, I’m too loyal to my pet and wouldn’t go for anything else. People would laugh at my ape saying that he’s not a DPS pet or that he’s too big :p Anyways, I’m glad that I kept him
One question though, how do I specc him correctly? Can you suggest where to put talent points?
Thanks!
