Poll Time

BRK » 16 October 2008 » In Pets, Talents » 70 Comments

The boy’s 6th birthday is Saturday. Do not expect a podcast on Saturday. Do not expect a blog-post on Saturday. If we’re fortunate, we’ll do a post Friday night to be posted Saturday, but don’t count on it. Podcast on Sunday, extremely maybe.

All you hunters who got on the PTR and played with the talent trees, how you feelin’ now? Smarter? You should.

Aspect of the Dragonhawk. This is fodder for a huge post. HUGE.

We’re going to do an Advanced Gorilladin Tactics movie. From the emails we’re getting, there’s some confusion here, we suspect because hunters have never truly had an AoE attack before, and some are having difficulty adapting. We’ll try to help.

And lastly, you get a poll to tell us which Core Hound you’re sporting around town.

But… I have both the Puppy Dog of Doom and the Molten Core Core Hound… and I could only choose one…

  2. Pelides on October 16th, 2008 6:17 pm

Proudly NOT annoying the crap out of my fellow players on Uldum with exotic pets.

  3. Zee on October 16th, 2008 6:26 pm

    Psh.

    Devilsaur representin’!

  4. Absitively on October 16th, 2008 6:33 pm

About to go help 5 hunters get orange corehounds.

    Go go Warlock Summons!

  5. Lee on October 16th, 2008 6:40 pm

I actually hate orange as a color, and green is my favorite color, so for me it was a no brainer which one o get. I don’t like the white one with the different heads at all.

Never been to Molton Core, I hit level 60 four weeks before TBC came out…

  6. Darksentinel on October 16th, 2008 6:42 pm

Puppy Dog, it actually looks like a beast. Those other things look like they should be demons – we’re not warlocks, people.
    Also Uvuros has bad breath.
Playing Horde, the Kurken gets a lot of comments, I just wish people would stop calling it a wolf. And yes, the screen shaking annoys people.

I’m liking the Puppy so much, I’m actually considering leveling with it, once it learns how to hold threat. No Gorilladin for me: “I’m not foreign, I’m exotic”!

And grats to BRK junior in advance, give the man a Core Hound.

Stupid wordpress (take 2). I’ve finally gotten into the habit of copying my comments on BRK.net to the clipboard before submitting them, just in case.

  7. Kakon on October 16th, 2008 6:43 pm

Driving the lesser classes nuts in Shatt with my puppy dog of doom! <3

  8. BRK on October 16th, 2008 6:43 pm

    Devilsaur representin’!

Have no fear, we’ll do a Devilsaur poll soon!

What we REALLY need to find out is…

    /snicker

    We’ll tell you later.

  9. Vronak on October 16th, 2008 6:47 pm

Getting the puppy as a Hordette was a little tricky since I’d never been to Azuremyst Isle. A newbie guide to getting there would be nice. (Naturally it was the boat from the third dock (the middle one!) that got me there from Auberdine.

But I’ve already had a bunch of comments in Shatt, and they’re fixing the shaking thing :)

  10. Stoneblood on October 16th, 2008 6:54 pm

I haven’t grabbed one yet, but when I do it’ll be nothing less than the Ancient Core Hound!
I know it’s the same skin as the regular Molten Core Core Hounds, but ancient just sounds so much better to me(even though the ‘ancient’ part will no-doubt disappear when tamed)

Even if the Molten Core hound skin looked way worse than all the others, I just think it’s far more epic to tame one of those than walking to a newbie zone and taming a pet that has no chance of hurting you during the taming process, or flying to a level 70 area that any 70 hunter would have little problems reaching.
At least Molten Core still scares people :)

  11. Irwin on October 16th, 2008 6:57 pm

    Mmmmm, Aspect of the Dragonhawk.

  12. Ulthwe on October 16th, 2008 7:01 pm

Molten Core Hound All the freaking way. Im proud of my puppy “LootTheDog” and taming a piece of the past.

  13. Maevet on October 16th, 2008 7:10 pm

Aye, a Gorilladin tactics movie is a great idea. I think the reason I’m as effective as I am (hell I tanked parts of Kara this morning), is that rather than wait for the patch, I grabbed a 55monkey and started power grinding him. When he hit 61, I started working out how to work the thunder stomp on a 2 min cd, grinding Bogflare Needlers. By 66 I was co-tanking 2-3 mobs in Mana Tombs with him.

  14. Sadcat on October 16th, 2008 7:13 pm

Oldschool hound all the way. Payback for eating me all those times.

  15. Brian on October 16th, 2008 7:32 pm

Gorilladin tip #1 focus dump -> autocast off

tip #2 as your first task in Nagrand, don’t attack a group of earth elementals, which are immune to nature damage.

I want to take him into a lower dungeon and agro a whole room and thunderstomp em all. with Recount.

  16. Brian on October 16th, 2008 7:35 pm

Has anyone tried Bears? It would seem that the Bear might be better against fewer targets, as an attack vs 3 targets should be stronger than an attack vs everyone, but the damage for Swipe looks like it is lower than Thunderstomp.

  17. Cynra on October 16th, 2008 7:39 pm

Where’s the option to put none? I feel like I’ve got the rare pet by not sporting a corehound! And I’m still waiting to hear when hunters get Aspect of the Tuna. Haha.

  18. Rilgon Arcsinh on October 16th, 2008 7:44 pm

Fodder for a huge yawn, maybe. Does nothing for PVE. *yawn*

  19. deltronzero & automator on October 16th, 2008 8:00 pm

Puppy, but I want it to have THREE heads so I can name it fluffy…

  20. Nick S. on October 16th, 2008 8:03 pm

Happy early birthday to mini-BRK. You should get him a kitten. Maybe white with stripes. ;-)

  21. Toresh on October 16th, 2008 8:26 pm

PUPPY DOG is orange baby that’s how we roll.

I love the epic adventure it was to get the orange one. For some reason it makes the whole deal so much better. The burring noise and the ground shakin really annoys the raid. That’s what we as hunters are made to do.
The hunter love in 3.02 is just awesome.

  22. David on October 16th, 2008 8:39 pm

ZOMG I tried Gorriladin and it is amazing! At lvl 60 with a pet health and tanking talents-heavy BM spec, my newly trained 55 gorilla couldn’t keep up threat worth squat (maybe 2-3 at a time tops), but after he leveled to 60 with me I could take 5-7 guys at a time while I volley away.

It was fun to run around and pick up mobs, and if a nearby mobs aggrod me instead, all I had to do was run to mah munkey and he picked him up for me (or feign). Charge is also especially nice to pick up mobs. I didn’t even have to attack for the pick up phase. I was like the conductor of an orchestra of monkey death. Standing on a hill overlooking a pack of mobs and seeing Gorilla run amongst them stomping away…I truly felt like a “beast master”. Then I rain arrows of death upon them and I am the ultimate hunter of Hellfire Peninsula, groar!

(BTW, his name is “Gorilla” because I named him that ironically)

Once I get some outland gears I’m hoping for pulls of 10 or more . 150k xp/hour at lvl 60, rested, is wayyy better than doing outland quests for the umpteenth time.

Thank you BRK for showing me the light of Gorilladin!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Jotun & Tartarus on October 16th, 2008 8:52 pm

gratz to BRK junior, and the poll should be for him not us, so he can chose his bday present xD

  24. Zandilar on October 16th, 2008 8:59 pm

I thought about getting the Kurken myself (and call him Cerebus)…

Only problem is, if someone else’s core hound annoys me with it’s screen-shaking-not-quite-as-giant-as-they-used-to-be paws, I’m sure my own would be just as annoying… Not to mention I’m not really sure I want to inflict that irritant on others.

I really really hope they nerf those paws.

  25. Sholva of Nagrand on October 16th, 2008 9:14 pm

How about The Beast from UBRS?

if i had to pick from those; PDOD.

  26. Darksentinel on October 16th, 2008 9:20 pm

If anyone care, I wrote up a guide for taming the Kurken (or rather, finding it) – not that it’s hard, but just if anyone doesn’t know how to get

If you don’t care, ignore this comment.

  27. Marathonian on October 16th, 2008 9:53 pm

I want a MC Core Hound.Call me a traditionalist.Unfortunately I can’t find anyone to run MC just so I can get a neato pet.

I did get a Gorilla, though I didn’t want the rare white.I recalled what a pain in the @ss King Mukla used to be way back when long before all the nerfs he received in the days when my main was a Dwarf Rogue. Now he is my own personal B17(|-|!

It has come full circle.Once I was but a n00b,now I the master!

    *Deep Echoing Evil Laughter*

  28. Hulrok on October 16th, 2008 9:59 pm

I HAD a Kurken, but there were so many people who had them, I felt like I did with Rak’Shiri. So, I went and got Uvuros. Only saw one other person with him, and green is my favorite coor anyhow. Yay for pally healer GMs!

  29. Duart on October 16th, 2008 11:10 pm

I went with the Puppy as well (though the Green is distinctive my 70 is unguilded right now and so no easy access to getting a group to get one)

So RinTinRinTin will be my exotic for now. but I have mostly suspended his levelling till the screen shake is fixed

I just picked up a stock white Gorilla in Ungoro to try the BRKtm Gorilladin fun with and was doing fine with up to 5 Clefthoofs at once took me about a hour to get Magilla from 65 to 66 I think mostly from lack of targets as BRK said he was getting from 65 to almost 67 in the same time frame so I must be doing something wrong. Perhaps the forthcoming extended Gorilladin how to video will show me the error of my ways

    Cheers
    Duart of Exodar

  30. kaelisra/phiil on October 17th, 2008 12:03 am

    @ Brian:
Bears can do more damage with their swipe, but it only hits in a ~180 degree arc in front of the bear. This means that sometimes you will probably have to reposition your bear (possibly multiple times) in order to have him hit all the mobs you want him to take. Swipe also lacks thunderstomp’s additional aggro modifier, making the gorilla better in most cases no matter what.

  31. Kohelani on October 17th, 2008 12:21 am

While I love the idea of bringing an old school, monstrous pet to the new WoW; the puppy dog looks the best imho and I’m gonna hafta look at it for a long time, so the PDoD gets my vote.

  32. Jemhadar on October 17th, 2008 1:04 am

Hunters with core hounds shouldnt be allowed in buildings, let alone cities. I’m a hunter but those folks annoy me to no end. Tickets are on there way for every hunter with such a beast running free in a city/building – until either the hunters dismiss there pet before the enter a city or Blizzard makes them untameable.

  33. Rua on October 17th, 2008 1:51 am

    @Jemhadar
It’s Blizzard’s fault for making the screenshake Server-side instead of just Client-side.

As to the OP: I’m only going Exotic for the Devilsaur.
And even that’s only for raiding.

I’m perfectly content with my Wasp, Gorilla and Cat (buff Rake Blizz, pls?) for everything else.

The +4pet talent points are awesome though.

Happy Birthday to the little ‘un.

  35. Turlagh on October 17th, 2008 2:09 am

@Jemhadar: Tuesday night there was a Hunter running around Stormwind with a newly tamed Uvuros. It was very annoying until I realized “I can get one of those too?” I plan on doing laps around the Trade District with my Kurken every day until that annoying noise and shaking is fixed ;)

  36. Hulrok on October 17th, 2008 2:15 am

I thought the cam shake was fixed already. Mine doesn’t shake anymore. Or, it didn’t after I tamed Uvuros. Yeah, after a while the shaking gets old – even if the stomping noise doesn’t.

  37. Niall on October 17th, 2008 3:30 am

I love my Puppy Dog of Doom for the looks, but I find the wasp to be such an amazing pet that I may just drop the 51st point. I’m thinking of going Wasp/Gorilla/Bear/bird of prey.

I think you should have another look at the wasp, 610 armor reduction is nothing to sneeze at. Especially if you want a pet who can still deal damage. Sure it’s no Worm, but hey, Scatter Shot is good.

  38. Dashiel on October 17th, 2008 3:31 am

On our realm there is a kill on site for any BM Hunters. Alot of people think we’re just showing off and I’ve actually been “spat” on my alliance and Horde alike. Has anyone else had this problem?

Oh and I has Uvuros. My old pets won’t be seeing the light of day for awhile.

  39. Yoco on October 17th, 2008 3:51 am

Do Uvuros and its spawns use the same model? They are certainly similar, but are they equal. Taming difficulty is certainly not equal though.
I’m lugging a spawn of uvuros around – in addition to its fancy green looks it also has the advantage of not shaking the screen.

  40. Vurag on October 17th, 2008 4:04 am

    Happy Birthday to “The Boy”!

  41. Nefernet on October 17th, 2008 4:27 am

Eurk, I didn’t vote. They are too ugly. And as if one ugly face wasn’t enough, they put two ! They have awful breath, they shake the earth and screen and that make me seasick… And they are everywhere on my server (at least the blue and green one, never seen the orange one… too hard to get I suppose…).

Hehe, joking, they are fun… (but ugly and with a foul breath and I won’t get one…) And I like the orange one but it won’t match with my new haircut…

And I catch my gorilla yesterday night (a black one). But I don’t know how to play with this fellow. And my cat is just amazingly good with the new talents ! Pewpew !
Just great ! So great that tonight, I’ll try KZ with guildies with my 68 hunter ! Cheers ! I’m so happy ! I just couldn’t wait to run KZ !

And early happy birthday to little BRK, grats, I wish you a great birthday party !

  42. PyroDC on October 17th, 2008 5:31 am

    @Duart

This is how I am levelling my Gorilladin:

Fly to the West side of Garadar
There are trees there around which 4-5 lvl 66 Talbuks mosy around.
Turn on Aspect of the Viper.
Turn off Smash (pet) and Cower (pet). This ensures that all focus is used for growl and ‘Stomp.
Send pet to the 1st Talbuk, Then the second, once aggro is established, Mend Pet.
Then keep sending the pet to another 4-5 of these suckers.
Autocasting ‘Stomp should keep aggro on all 6-7 Talbuks.
Chain cast Volley. Make sure Mend Pet is used every 15 sec.
    Rinse, Repeat.
Make circlular pattern around the trees, remember to go along the “Coastline” first, then back around the west clumps of trees once you hit the mountainside.
It’s like mage AOE grinding but cooler. :)

  43. Berg on October 17th, 2008 6:00 am

I haven’t gotten a core hound, yet. Been having a blast with my Gorilladin! Devilsaur is next on my list. Looking forward to the movie and Happy Birthday to your son!

  44. Ziller on October 17th, 2008 6:08 am

I play Horde so I had to sneak over to Azuremyst Isle to get my Core hound. It was easier than I thought, I guess everyone is playing WH at the moment as no one was there to hassle me. Kurken next to my Tauren really does look like a puppy.

I’m on a white pet quest, I have: Kurken and Uhk’loc. Now I’m after a Ghost Saber.

    Gratz mini BRK!

  45. Gultruk on October 17th, 2008 6:30 am

Well, Old school was my thing.

Anyways: Congratulations and a happy birthday to BRK junior :-)

    G.

  46. Berg on October 17th, 2008 6:33 am

Just 411 for you all. Ghostcrawler has stated that “We are going to disable the screen shake once the pet is tamed.” He posted it in the official forums.

  47. Hrothar on October 17th, 2008 6:49 am

I went for the pup cause all my other pets are white.

    white lion – Marmaduke
    white bear – Engelbert
    white Devilsaur – Daisy
    white gorilla – Bubbles
    white core hound – Wodan

  48. Sharon on October 17th, 2008 8:12 am

Our boy’s birthday party (9th) is tomorrow too, even though his actual birthday isn’t until the next week. Say happy birthday to the midget.

I picked up the Kurken on my level 64 hunter. While the screen shaking doesn’t bother me, because I’m usually running along anyway, it gives one of my guildmates headaches. The one thing that bugs ME, though, is the stutter-stop forward on casting Lava Breath. It makes it annoying for a leveling hunter who has to stand around and wait for him to inch forward into melee range to cast growl.

I’m considering picking up a Chimera instead, because Cunning looks interesting (Carrion Feeder!). Does anyone know if it does that stutter-stop thing on casting Froststorm Breath? I’d appreciate the info.

  49. Doomilias on October 17th, 2008 8:29 am

dont forget to multishot when gorilladin farming. i only use one mend pet per pull right now, usually a group of 5-6 talbuks. while my boy is stomping them up, im looting and skinning the previous group. 40 stacks of knothide in 2 hours, yessir. its all about the chain pull.

  50. Bazz on October 17th, 2008 9:08 am

I will go for the greenie…later.
Got to find a healer to help first, and that’s HARD.. should be an Achievement.

Find a Healer within 4 hours to keep you alive while taming trap-resistant beasts – 50 points.

Still, went and camped Un’Goro for white gorrilladin.. no luck, got bored, took U’Cha instead.

Found my white devilsaur tho… called him Spot.
He wasn’t hard to tame, exactly… but hard to catch!
run after him.. pant, pant pant… freeze trap down, tame beast OUT OF RANGE.. sigh. run after him.. etc

Took Ppot over to Mana Forge B’naar.. set him on the 68 elite mech wanderer whoozit… and watched.. he’s level 65 at this point remember.. I finally finished the mech off with one arcane shot.. Spot still had 93% health.. seemed a shame to spoil his fun, he seemed to be enjoying himself.

gorrilladin (no name yet) I set to gather some belfs.. hey whadja know it works! AOE tanking.. whodathought?

he didn’t manage to keep aggro all the time – he’s only 65 after all, but very good nonetheless.

Now we have to pester Blizz to increase the number of pet ID slots for the pet bar. With 6 or more skills now, we need more than the 4 slots.
There are currently 10 PetIDs available. 3 for Behaviour(Aggressive, defensive, passive) 3 for attack, follow, stay which leaves us with 4 for Growl, Bite, Monstrous Bite, Self Heal, pee on the tree, bury the night elf and what all new skills our pets get.

  51. Saayah on October 17th, 2008 9:19 am

At the Kurken now, and the message is Creature Not Tameable. They must have changed it. Suxxorz.

  52. Saayah on October 17th, 2008 9:22 am

    Never mind, duh.

  53. kunukia on October 17th, 2008 9:34 am

Happy Birthday, BRK Jr.!! And many more…

Did you say the Kurken is no longer tamable? I got her yesterday evening. Maybe that is the message if you don’t have beastmastery?

  54. Clioratha on October 17th, 2008 11:22 am

    Grats on 6, miniBRK!

For core hounds, I’m not particularly interested, although if I had to pick one I’d go with the Kurken. The Gorilladin is an intriguing possibility though.

  55. Weezoh on October 17th, 2008 11:57 am

Love love love aoe farming with my gorilla. Some news on the core hound front – they’re removing the screen shake once tamed soon. Can’t say I blame them i’ve thought about getting one and just couldn’t stand it just with others having one around.

  56. Pelides on October 17th, 2008 12:26 pm

Gah! I’m so ticked off right now! I HAD to go back to BM after about 6 months as Survival. Survival is completely and utterly broken now in terms of raid utility.

Grrrrrrrrr! This “there can only be one raid spec” mentality Blizz has is crap.

  57. Night on October 17th, 2008 12:37 pm

I love my gorilla soooo much. I love the pure carnage of pulling 5-7mobs at a time and then letting the arrows fly. Wall of dmg text FTW. :) Aggro problems have yet to be a concern, its pretty easy to manage. By aoe grinding I was able to level my gorilla from lvl 65 to 70 in less than a 24hr period.

Thanks for clueing me in on gorillas BRK, they really fit my playstyle at times. :)

  58. Asara on October 17th, 2008 12:53 pm

I had to stop in and send some kudos to Mrs. BRK, as it seems we spent the same day in the hospital, a year apart. Mini-Mr. Asara will be 5 tomorrow. Pretty cool! :)

  59. saphia on October 17th, 2008 3:50 pm

    Happy Birthday lil’ BRK!

  60. Anake on October 17th, 2008 4:27 pm

Right now, my server is INUNDATED with corehounds and deviltoddlers. Have you seen a devilsaur run with Pack or Cheetah? Blizz should add a diaper and a bag of Cheerios to complete the image. The cool quotient on them is shrinking, and their special abilities don’t really seem to have a ton of raid utility. I’d like to test drive a gorilla, but I REALLY want to get a worm into the raid, and see what that armor reduction can do.

    Mmmmmmm…ShaiHulud.

  61. Nyctreinar on October 17th, 2008 5:34 pm

Aside from the fact that micro-hunters (I’m still around level 20-ish) don’t get to tame pets with awesomesauce, where’s the poll? All I see is a huge white space. You didn’t embed something that requires MS Internet Newb Exploiter, did you? Cuz I’m using Firefox. IE is for Windows Updates, and virus installations.

  62. Stoneblood on October 17th, 2008 7:45 pm

I’m using Chrome and the poll displays just fine. Try it. it’s made of winTM :)

  63. Sarai on October 17th, 2008 10:46 pm

    Pffft, core hound.

I tamed a chimaera & a bear, got both to 66 first day, & love them both. Will probly tame a devilsaur, but not til my new guys are leveled up.

  64. Aradel on October 17th, 2008 10:53 pm

We tamed the corehounds in Molten Core using some of the advice in an earlier post on this forum.

We used a two hunter one druid format. We started inviting more hunters to come as we got it down. Yes my dog is named after the wonderful druid who helped me tame him. (Thanks Lucky!)

    Some additional advice:

Take two or more hunters, and cast Mis-direct onto the taming hunter. There are two easy to get dogs, and they respawn fairly quick after taming.

Death will come frequently. A bot is your friend. The corehounds can see the stealthed druid. One pathed right over our chosen spot on a 5 min cycle, it was tame or die.

Healing Druid does not have to be resto, most boomkins can heal this fine. Resto threat reduction talent does help, but with a MD not an issue.

Put a scorpid sting on the dog, use an agi pot, eat stam food and most importantly don’t forget to use your new spell called Deterrence. Once we figured out that part we did three quick tames in a row.

  65. Turlagh on October 19th, 2008 2:21 am

My WoofWoof was slapped and spat upon in Gadgetzan by a fellow Alliance Hunter. But you have to expect that from Night Elves.;)

  66. Knurd on October 20th, 2008 3:48 pm

So … I have the Molten Core one. It took a Shaman, (Heroism FTW), and a pally healer to tame him. Not to mention the warrior tank and the warlock that came to help clear trash and watch.

I named him Fluffy after I had him and took him into Onyxia the next day. My dumb butt forgot to turn off growl … normally this would be a problem but it turned into fun instead. At 18% she returned from flight phase only to be picked up by none other than Fluffy. She promptly tanked her from 18% – 0%. God I love my new pet!!

(Although am glad they are taking the shaking away)

  67. Tim on October 20th, 2008 8:22 pm

How comes the Gorilladin tanking video, BRK? Any ETA on when we can enjoy it?

  68. Niall on October 21st, 2008 4:54 am

I just took my brand spanking new no xp 65 gorilladin to LBRS. Brought along a 66 shaman for some extra healing. WOW. We cleared it in about an hour, but that pet is just amazing. Gonna get the white one I think.

  69. Name Anonymous on October 21st, 2008 8:42 am

A real core hound all the way. I lucked out and the first core hound I came across in the core was an ancient one. (And yes I know there are no difference in MC Hounds once tamed.)

Also, I think the Molton Core ones look the best under the influence of Bestial Wrath.

Besides, what’s the fun of getting an exotic pet that didn’t present a challenge in getting it.

The Puppy is just wait in line. The SMV Hound is using a priest with fear ward to be able to tame Uvuros – or just go after a non-elite one. No [real] challenge.

Getting a MC Hound requires getting to one with a healer, then making sure you have enough threat on the Hound so your healer doesn’t get eaten.

Just wondering if anyone’s tried, but I was in UBRS the other day helping a guildie get [Leeeeeeroy!] and when we got to The Beast I hit Beast Lore on a whim.

    Lo!

    Tameable (Exotic)

I tried, I really did, but it’s hard to tame with a druid healer, especially when the beast has all those nasty knockbacks and stuns.

Mad props to anyone that manages this.
