It’s not a Heroic, But

Durante’s gorilladin tanks Gruuls. We wish there were more substantial evidence that the gorilla tanked the entire thing – like a movie – but after playing with tenacity-pets for a week, do you doubt this is possible?

We don’t.

Hm, if there are like 4-5 hunters in the raid who constantly missdirect on the gorilla then maybe. But pets are not crit-immun nor crush-immun and one crit/crush would eat that gorilla (raid-buffed maybe at 10k hp).
Looking at the screenshot I’d say that the mt just died (thus not shown in omen) and the hunter left growl on ^^

  2. Matzeh on October 22nd, 2008 7:31 am

Uhhh, there is someone in the raid with Aspect of the pack on. Bad idea…. ;-)

  3. Sylagdu on October 22nd, 2008 7:38 am

I think that is aspect of the beast, not aspect of the pack….

  4. Sylagdu on October 22nd, 2008 7:41 am

I think that is aspect of the beast, not aspect of the pack….
Increases the pet’s melee AP by 10% so makes sense if he is trying to maximise aggro for bubbles.

  5. Galoheart on October 22nd, 2008 7:43 am

A movie would have been better to check and see.

  6. Goofball Jones on October 22nd, 2008 8:04 am

I have no doubt at all that it’s possible…as long as everyone in the raid understands that the pet is tanking. It’s hard to get people to understand how different things are. I’m still hearing healers complain that they no longer have 2200 healing and saying there’s no way they could heal anymore….which means they haven’t even tried yet. Some people just can’t wrap their heads around the way the game has changed.

  7. forthepie on October 22nd, 2008 8:13 am

Yeah, it’s possible. My level 69 bear tanks HH consistently when the pally tank swaps in her other characters. I’ve had a level 65 Devilsaur tank all but the last guy for the Ring of blood battles, the bear finished the big guy off.

bigredrhino.wordpress.com has feats listed as people tank with their tenacity pets. And to the first poster: my level 69 bear has 11k health with just the buffs I can give it, in raid gear. Raid buffed that pet could probably get to 14k health and be pushing 20k armor.

  8. Dradis on October 22nd, 2008 8:46 am

@ Jemhadar, The only thing the pet has to worry about are crits. Bosses cannot crush any more unless they are four levels higher then you. Raid bosses are calculated as 3 levels higher. So if Bubbles is level 70, then he cannot be crushed. Level 69 however……

  9. Uniquorn on October 22nd, 2008 9:21 am

I don’t doubt this. I went BM to tank HH for the past 3 days and the strat is simple. Aspect of the Beast for 10% damage increase, MD whenever it’s up (I use a macro that’s something like /target focus /cast Misdirect /targetlasttarget), and just spec towards all the healing, health increase on both you and your pets talent trees. The only time Cuddles lost aggro is when the warlocks seed of corruption went off.

  10. Tigerfeet on October 22nd, 2008 9:22 am

HA! When they were putting the group together for this (I couldn’t go because I kept crashing) I was wondering if it’d end up on your radar. I’m glad it did.

    Hydraxis woot!

  11. Solidstate on October 22nd, 2008 9:24 am

    I believe it.
The picture shows Gruul at growth #2 and already getting close to 50% life. I’m guessing he was down at around growth #4. No reason the healers should not be able to keep the pet up at such low growth levels, thanks to the post-patch nerf reducing bosses damage output.
I do have to wonder though how the pet managed to keep agro. I guess a lot of misdirects and people using agro-wiping abilites.

Or maybe the whole thing is just an elaborate e-peen hoax by Durante. But even if it is, gz on pulling it off in a consistent manner and not having anyone from the raid blow the whistle on it :)

I’m doubly glad I tamed myself a gorilla last night! :) Managed to get him up to level 67 before going to sleep. Can anyone recommened a good AoE grinding spot so I can level him up more quickly?

  12. Hypertrophy on October 22nd, 2008 10:27 am

Try the Ba ‘ira ruins or something in SMV valley. There are tons of ashtongue workers and shamans there. Really good for AoE grind leveling pet to 69.

  13. WB on October 22nd, 2008 10:31 am

    @Solidstate:
There’s a nice posting somehwere on the Pally boards that lists AoE grinding spots for a pally leveling up. You might see if you can find that one.

Having said that, one place you might try is Death’s Door. The mobs are packed close enough together that AoE grinding would be effective. Used to be a popular farming spot, but probably not so much any more. Also, Orges is you’re not neutral with O’grimar. Actually, better if you are.

Regarding the gorilla tank. I suspect its real for the same reasons. Gruul’s doesn’t crush and damage is nerfed. As pointed out, Gruul’s is only growth #2 and already almost 50%. Most of the Gruul’s pain to a raid is later growths and Shatters, so tearing him down shouldn’t be a problem if you know what you’re doing. Threat would be the big issue, but a MD rotation, aggro dropping talents and Aspect of Beast would all work wonders. Also, did the rogues keep their new “misdirect” talent?

One other thought tho. Can we tell that the gorrilla is main tanking, or is he taking the hurtful (hateful?) strikes instead?

  14. WB on October 22nd, 2008 10:35 am

Ah, nvrmd, I just saw Omen in the pic.

  15. Relkama on October 22nd, 2008 10:55 am

Firstly I have no doubt that this is possible with understanding. I have been tanking heroics with my Gorilla since the patch. But, with the upcoming patch I see that the damage done by the Thunderstomp is being changed to spell damage not physical.

I’m under the assumption that this will nearly completely the effective standing AoE tanking the Gorilla can produce. The damage will be back down to base 237-333 nature damage, so no more 2k crits on those Naga at the Isle of Quel.

I know they will still be able to tank, but the overall effectiveness will be scrapped, particularly for higher dps groups.

    Any additional thoughts?

  16. Rick on October 22nd, 2008 11:21 am

What threat meter is being used in the SS to bring up that frame on the left side?

  17. Jageria on October 22nd, 2008 11:36 am

    @ Rick – That is Omen3.

  18. Mauryl on October 22nd, 2008 12:06 pm

This is most certainly possible. If you click on the link to the forum post, the hunter’s spec is NOT a raid spec. It’s 100% pet tank all the way. He also mentions the gear he wore. Two pieces of t-5 to help with healing, and the rest was all pvp gear. Gem slots-Stam gems. Item enchants-Stam enchants. Buff food-Stam buff. This hunter spent a lot of time preparing for this feat. Pet health at 16k…I bet the hunter’s health alone was over 15k. Blizzard stated that they want tenacity pets to be “viable off-tank options” in raids. For those who’ve done even a modicum of raiding, we know that it’s not a big jump from off-tank to main-tank.

With that spec and gear setup, I’d bet this hunter could solo most heroics without much difficulty. Myself, I am still raid specced on my hunter. No t5-2pc set bonus, very little pvp gear and my Gorilla(Cooramoor) can tank just about anything I ask him to successfully. He’s tanked 9 regular mobs at once and survived. I’ve not worked up the courage to take on a Fel Reaver because I lack the 2pc t5 bonus, but rest assured I’ll probably end up trying it anyway.

  19. Maevet on October 22nd, 2008 12:07 pm

man, thought I was doing good with KG tanking Kara..

    I dun been trumped…

  20. Jahka on October 22nd, 2008 12:17 pm

Pet tanks are more like pet tanks now. The first time we did kara after the patch, we wiped the floor with it, and 90% of the time, my bear was tanking the bigger trash, and that was even without his taunt. The ability to gain threat for Tenacity pets is insane, and even my main tank is impressed.

Plague tanks the HH now ;D

  21. Thelastdeadmouse on October 22nd, 2008 12:20 pm

    Thelastdeadmouse aka Durante,

The video has been posted the thread for your enjoyment.

Threat averaged around 1200 TPS with peaks of 1500 and valleys as low as 900. Only myself and the other hunter MDed, and rogues don’t get Tricks of the Trade until (I believe) level 75.

I must give credit to BigRedKitty and Ihlos at BigRedRhino.wordpress.com. BRK not only got me interested in pushing myself in game, but also his first tenacity pet post got in interested in pet tanking as a whole. Ihlos’ “Feats” page on his pet tanking site pushes us to make our pets do whatever is possible.

I’ve been a BRK fan for over a year now, and I thought of sending you the story myself but couldn’t work up the nerve; I’m honored. /salute.

  23. Nuadin on October 22nd, 2008 12:25 pm

I BELIEVE IT!!! lol my gorilla tanked every group quest in SMV last night. just keep MD up when u can and its easy… with more than one hunter using MD it’s totally possible!

I am so in love with how hunter pets have changed!

  24. Messyah on October 22nd, 2008 1:17 pm

I’d be more impressed if he tanked HKM (High King Mulgar) since I think he its harder than Gruul, but this is an amazing feat none-the-less.

The phrase “Durante’s Gorilladin tanks Gruuls.” is a link to the thread on the hunter forum, which contains links to screenshots and the video. Here’s a copy of the video link : http://files.filefront.com/Gruul+Bubbles+tankswmv/;12128097;/fileinfo.html

  28. Nissi on October 22nd, 2008 3:31 pm

@Relkama … This is my biggest worry. After spending a few days trying to get the white gorilla and leveling him up, to have his effectiveness in AoE tank slapped down like this its disconcerting.

I really do hope we see a new BRK video of the new effectiveness of the gorilla pet for AoE pulling come 3.03.

  29. Hammerhiem & Cuddles on October 22nd, 2008 3:52 pm

You realize that some of the damage going from physical to magical (whatever school it will be) is not really a nerf right? Armor mitigates physical damage. Armor does not mitigate spell damage, only magic resistance does. Bosses have a lot of armor, hence the desire for armor penetration as a stat for classes that use physical damage…this change might just be a buff if you think about it.

It’s not easy having yourself a good time
Greasing up those bets and betters
    Watching out they don’t four-letter
F*** and kiss you both at the same time
    Smells-like something I’ve forgotten
Curled up died and now it’s rotten

    I’m not a gangster tonight
Don’t want to be a bad guy
    I’m just a loner baby
And now you’re gotten in my way

    I can’t decide
Whether you should live or die
Oh, you’ll probably go to heaven
Please don’t hang your head and cry
    No wonder why
    My heart feels dead inside
It’s cold and hard and petrified
Lock the doors and close the blinds
    We’re going for a ride

It’s a bitch convincing people to like you
If I stop now call me a quitter
If lies were cats you’d be a litter
    Pleasing everyone isn’t like you
    Dancing jigs until I’m crippled
Slug ten drinks I won’t get pickled

I’ve got to hand it to you
You’ve played by all the same rules
It takes the truth to fool me
And now you’ve made me angry

    I can’t decide
Whether you should live or die
Oh, you’ll probably go to heaven
Please don’t hang your head and cry
    No wonder why
    My heart feels dead inside
It’s cold and hard and petrified
Lock the doors and close the blinds
    We’re going for a ride

Oh I could throw you in the lake
Or feed you poisoned birthday cake
I wont deny I’m gonna miss you when you’re gone
Oh I could bury you alive
But you might crawl out with a knife
And kill me when I’m sleeping
    That’s why

    I can’t decide
Whether you should live or die
Oh, you’ll probably go to heaven
Please don’t hang your head and cry
    No wonder why
    My heart feels dead inside
It’s cold and hard and petrified
Lock the doors and close the blinds
    We’re going for a ride

    Scissor Sisters-I Can’t Decide

My 62 Gorilla tanked Terokkarantula level 65 and I was 65 too.

    I believe.

  31. Smashbox of Stormreaver on October 22nd, 2008 4:28 pm

I don’t see how it is possible. I tamed a gorilla and a worm. The worm seems to hold better aggro on a single target but still, it is easy to rip aggro off even with a misdirect. My thing is, my pet gets crit hard so tanking a boss, let alone a boss like Gruul, seems to be impossible for those reasons. You have 24 other people in that raid and even with misdirect rotation getting aggro wouldn’t be hard for one of them over my pet. Even though they take SO much healing, it just seems too much for the pet to handle. My gorilla was moderately hard for a healer to keep up on Phase two of the last boss on ring of blood in Nagrand because of how much damage he was taking. I would like to see a couple things in the next patch.

1.) Better Tenacity pet threat generation
2.) An ability to add an uncrushableness (not a word) to your pet
    3.) More armor, more stamina.

The heals it takes are fine if not too much as is so that is fine.

  32. Rilgon Arcsinh on October 22nd, 2008 5:48 pm

2.) An ability to add an uncrushableness (not a word) to your pet

Assuming your pet is 70 (or 80), it can’t be crushed. It can be critted, sure, but Grace of the Mantis reduces that down to 1.6%, if my math is correct – still a large number to a healer, but it’s better than full crit potential. :x

  33. Tim on October 22nd, 2008 6:14 pm

Be sure to check out bigredrhino.wordpress.com for not only information on Hunter Tenacity pets, but on all kinds of tanking feats hunters are doing.

  34. Aetmos on October 22nd, 2008 6:44 pm

I have to doubt it, if only because of aggro. I think it may be possible if the raid was mostly hunters and they were macro’ing constant Misdirects onto the pet tank, but I’d need to see a video before I could believe it.

  35. Tanthalasa on October 22nd, 2008 6:49 pm

He now has a link to a video asses to his original post. Very cool to think Blizz is giving hunters the ability to do this now. Let’s just hope it doesn’t get nerfed

  36. Zwingli on October 22nd, 2008 7:08 pm

Yep, there is a video, link to his specc and the pet’s specc. Multiple SSs. Be sure to take a gander at the Omen screen. His pet is holding aggro.

    This is nice.

  37. Woodrun on October 22nd, 2008 8:38 pm

Finally a real tanking pet – I love my gorilla took my about 3 hours to get him from 65 to 68 jsut doing SSO – he tanks so well its silly

As BRK would say – Foshizzle!

PS I believe Durante pulled that off

  38. Chyna on October 22nd, 2008 9:48 pm

I have been playing with my Gorilla and I’m still trying to figure out how to set up a working Intervene macro. Anyone here got one, or can explain how to use this talent?

  39. Treos on October 22nd, 2008 11:29 pm

My gorilla is named Bubbles… how random… Glad it isn’t the same gorilla.

  40. Erhnam on October 23rd, 2008 12:53 am

Chyna depends on how you want to use it, can be as easy as something like this for a soloing macro.

    /cast [target=Player] Intervene

If you want it to go to other people then you can change the Player part to say focus or target if you like. Only big issue is not having the focus to use the spell, so you can either just keep mashing the button till it goes or have the macro set up to turn off spells so they’ll save up focus faster. I’m not that big a macro expert so I’m not sure how to do that. Hope this helps some.

  41. Nick S. on October 23rd, 2008 2:02 am

I tanked Attumen (during Phase 1 only, real-tank on Midnight during that phase) with my Gorilla (specced Surv.)

    Total breeze.

I believe that Hunter pets will actually be superior tanks on raid bosses that do heavy cleaving/AoE thanks to the huge AoE damage mitigation they offer. It’s an idea that needs some testing, sure, but I see no reason why it couldn’t be true.

  42. Chyna on October 23rd, 2008 3:18 am

Thank you Erhnam, that actually confirms what I was suspecting.

  43. UBowned on October 23rd, 2008 4:51 am

I have been reading these blogs for a while now and i love BRK’s threads.

As Far as the Macro goes, it does depend on what you want it for. If it is to save your butt and only yours then this : /cast [target=Player] Intervene
    will work fine.

If you are in a raid and planning on being a useful raider, you can go for 2 types, mouseovers, fun but not so great on being sure who to mouseover, due to agro.

    Or target of target macro’s:
    My suggestion would possibly be:
    /cast [target=targettarget] Intervene

And BRK, you made me break my 29 hunter twink and level 70. Your posts of end game fun and craziness as a hunter have inspired me to become an ‘us’.
    Keep up the awesome work.

  44. Smashbox of Stormreaver on October 23rd, 2008 9:40 am

yeah, I meant Crit not Crush, my bad. Anyway, did a lot of testing today on my pets threat generation and such. With his focus dump on he generated about the same threat as he did with it off, so I suppose just leave it on for the dps. Also timing a MD on the pet a good 15 seconds before the pull seemed to work pretty well to. I tanked HH today and that made it to where 5 seconds in to the fight I was able to cast another MD which helped with threat. BUT on a boss situation with continuous dps on the boss, I don’t see it possible to keep threat up on the pet unless like stated above, there were SEVERAL hunters in the Gruuls casting Misdirections every time their cooldown was up.

  45. Fannypak on October 24th, 2008 3:55 pm

If you got WoWInsider you will see the video. It happened. Just like the picture shows.
