BRK Gorilladin 101 Movie

BRK » 23 October 2008 » In Movie, Pets » 56 Comments

Done, and with one hair color.

Remember that this is a 101-class, and we’re trying not to get into macro-research or do anything a normal, casual player wouldn’t be inclined to be doing.

Please download the YouTube-sized (95MB) movie here, and the full-sized (154MB) movie here.

Edit: If a hunter doesn’t have the Tier 5 bonus, can a Gorilladin tank a regular instance? Yes.

    Great video!

Only one trouble with the AoE farming with the gorilla and volley.Your ranged weapon’s durability goes down insanely fast.

Bows and guns are breaking more than ever since we are actually using volley now.I think that every hit from volley takes just a bit of durability, but with us using it so much it adds up quickly. So be cautious and repair frequently.

In an instance not near a repair NPC,bring an engineer who has repair bots.

I never thought of using BW to get Marbles (Da Monkey o’ Death) out of the stuns.
Next step for me is to get the 2nd pc of T5. I just got the shoulders about 30 minutes ago…now to find a way into SSC.

    Kudos BRK, as usual!

  4. Lee on October 24th, 2008 12:15 am

I have volley leveled from 38 to 70 after the patch, yes I level fast as a hunter, and my weapons dont take damage at all, or so little I never noticed it. I use FuBar Duratek to show me the dura on all gear. Either way, it never stopped me from leveling that way.

Awesome movie, I can totally understand wha it is so cool / fun to level with a gorilla. I love my devilsaur and uvuros core hound, but the gorilla really is amazing…

  5. Hel on October 24th, 2008 12:25 am

If only I could look at the gorillas without thinking “ew! Hit it with a rock!” :(

Nothing personal to the gorilla fans out there, but I tamed one and just didn’t like the look of it. Wasn’t a fan of it’s idle animations either.

Strangely I tamed a crocolisk the other day despite being leery of them for years thanks to their hissing noise, and I just don’t find them that annoying. Personal preference is a weird thing. I’m being a nice hunter and telling my croc to wait outside when I go into the auction house or bank though :)

  6. Anotherclown on October 24th, 2008 12:39 am

I grabbed the exact same gorilla model thinking that it would be at least semi-unique. Hearth back to shat and what do I see upon leaving the aldor inn… 2 of them. Hmmm oh well, at least he’ll blend in to the snow.

Also, Curse you WP Spamfree. The only time I didn’t copy my comment just in case it eats it *shakes fist*

  7. Hoovs on October 24th, 2008 2:36 am

Save them bunnies! It’s a bit more advanced and technical, but theres a nice little trick to misdirect. You can use the first two charges, it’s two more mobs and won’t affect the trick. Save the last charge though. With that last charge, lay an explo trap when all the mobs are grouped up. The explo traps explosion will use up the last charge on all the mbos in radius. The initial burst damage will be applied to your pets threat on each mob hit by it. The tick damage afterwards will not. Helps build a bit more aoe aggro on your pet. Been using this with a plain ol raptor pre 3.0.

  8. Rua on October 24th, 2008 2:44 am

I’ve never had any trouble with multiple Clefthoof pulls. Thunderstomp always went off without fail. I didn’t have to specially aim Volley either.

If you ever doubt that you’ll hit all the mobs with your Volley, put the dot that’s in the middle of the aiming circle on top of your Gorilla. Doing it this way assures that you’ll hit all mobs attacking your Gorilla.

I’ve also never had any problems with errant mobs running for me. Freezing Trap/Misdirection/Feign Death was always more than enough.

One note: That macro with Hunters Mark/petattack is one of the most useful things I have. Key it to a button you can reach easily and you’ll never have to worry about aiming your pet again. Also good for those moments when you need to be quick with your pet and it alerts your friends that your priorities have changed. BIG BOUNCY ARROW!!!!

Great Video BRK, cleared up a couple of things i was having issues with. Off i go to continue to practice.

  11. Jeanne on October 24th, 2008 5:56 am

    Wonderful movie, as usual.

I liked the tip of putting the gorilla in Defensive mode which is something I hadn’t thought of since I’ve been so used to having my pet in Passive mode. It’ll definitely make using my Gorilla easier.

  12. Rekelectric on October 24th, 2008 6:30 am

We know Gorilladin is perfect for group aoe’ing, but how is he for the 1-on-1 fights?
I am talking levelling and solo’ing quests here.
Does he totally suck at it, or is he just no fun at it but still tanks nicely without loosing aggro?

  13. BRK on October 24th, 2008 6:54 am

We know Gorilladin is perfect for group aoe’ing, but how is he for the 1-on-1 fights?

He’s a Tenacity pet, so he gets all those goodies. But his main spell is for AoE DPS; he has nothing like the Worm to reduce the target’s armor, or the Turtle to drastically reduce damage-taken. He’s a very good 1-on-1 tank, just not the best choice available.

  14. Jeanne on October 24th, 2008 7:34 am

Since Thunderstomp generates additional threat, I’d say that he’s a very good tank for 1 mob or 2 or 3 mobs or more, especially when you have someone with you. Say a t5 rogue who knows how to do dps and isn’t afraid to do as much damage as possible and you’re a t6 hunter who isn’t too shabby.

We both went out and did a bunch of elite quests tonight and my gorilla kept aggro without a bit of a problem. If there’s a pet that can generate as much threat as the gorilla and can tank just as well, I’d like to know which one that is.

  15. Jobe on October 24th, 2008 8:41 am

    BRK,

Could you post the pet talent build for that gorilla? I’ve had two of them now and was not impressed with them at all. Of course, I don’t have T-5 gear either. I find that they have low DPS and can’t hold aggro if I open fire on the target., thus I have to use intimidation and manually cast thunderstomp and misdirection to control a single or group of mobs. Volley still costs way to much mana to use it often.

  16. Euripedes on October 24th, 2008 8:48 am

    YES. SO MUCH YES.

Gorilla is at 67, and coming along nicely.

  17. Parise on October 24th, 2008 8:53 am

    hey brk,

Great movie. I picked up my gorilla right away at lvl 32 and never looked back. I have been in situations where my pet has held and saved me from 6 mobs at once. He is the best!

  18. kunukia on October 24th, 2008 9:05 am

I got the orange gorilla, not being patient enough to wait for the white. He seems to be less common, on my server anyway.

  19. Riojin on October 24th, 2008 9:16 am

I have replaced my old windserpent macro with thunderstomp so that it goes off against single targets, between guard dog and thunderstomp single target tanking is easy money

  20. eternalson on October 24th, 2008 9:30 am

Did you ever consider turning your hunter guide movies into a video podcast?

  21. cgeorgemo on October 24th, 2008 9:40 am

Well since nobody else has mentioned this I will go ahead and point out another big plus to AOE volley farming/grinding with a gorilla. Volley doesn’t use and ammo. Less expenses while playing is always a big plus for me.

  22. Caeldera on October 24th, 2008 10:11 am

Wow, another great video BRK! My hunter is still a lowbie but I’m working on getting him ready for the xpac. Quck question: What are the addons that BRK is using to change the UI? I love how it puts a white stroke around his chat box and icons and I can’t seem to find that option on any of the ones that I’ve tried.

    Thanks!

  23. Goratt on October 24th, 2008 10:42 am

I’ve had a lot of luck grinding on bog giants with my gorilladin. I’m in lvl 70 Outlands greens and the Pet is lvl 66. I speced in to Taunt to help pull mobs off when I pull agro but other wise it’s the same build. It is clear that better gear than greens will make this work very well.

  24. Traz on October 24th, 2008 11:19 am

    Eternalson:
“Did you ever consider turning your hunter guide movies into a video podcast?”

Now, that is a great idea! Please consider it BRK…

Nice video btw – well done yet again :)
Got my Gorilla to 69 now and can’t believe how awesome he is.
Even so, the core hound is my favourite so far…

  25. Errol on October 24th, 2008 11:41 am

any advice for hunters under 70 who might not have kill command yet? i love my gorilla but most of your advice seems to assume all the hunters are level 70

  26. Errol on October 24th, 2008 11:43 am

i do still have around 1k AP at level 63 with a couple blues from soloed group quests and the t2 helm(now i found a blue thats better, but dragon helm is so much cooler, indecision, indecision. ohnoes)

  27. Pantone on October 24th, 2008 12:16 pm

Love your pet videos, all of them… I’m leveling with gorilla at 61 (since lvl 35), and another great tip is to tab to the next target while volleying when your main target dies so that you keep autoshot going during the volleys. And throw in a multishot if you need some extra burst after a volley. Then just single pull a mob and get your mana back with AoViper and Rapid Fire. I usually volley two big groups, then fill mana on single mob…repeat. No need to drink. And don’t worry about not having Kill Command while leveling, still works without it.

  28. aNTE on October 24th, 2008 12:39 pm

been aoe farming bloodelves in netherstorm (that spot SW of area 52 where the frost mages farm) – & have found that the addition of a frost trap is great for mobs that run (add the glyph of front trapping for some extra trap range and staying power).

i’m soooo hooked on this gorilladian thing i’m not sure how i’ll ever play a single target pet again.

  29. Kristy on October 24th, 2008 12:41 pm

Enough with the stupid monkey. I don’t like monkeys. Do other pet movies, like the Epic Devilsaurs. They actually deserve more than 1 movie.

  30. Jobe on October 24th, 2008 1:17 pm

    Okie Dokie,

After watching the movie several more times and making new macros for thunderstomp and misdirect, my big white monkey is the new terror of Negrand! Thanks for the video! Keep them coming.

  31. Davlin-Hydraxis on October 24th, 2008 1:28 pm

Yeah, I’d love to see more wind serpent video. But yes, your gorilla movie has turned me onto one. I’ve got one now (Bubba) who I’m going to start using as an off tank.
Thanks for the misdirect macro idea. I’ve got thousands of macros and never actually made one for misdirect.

    But can it bubble-hearth?

  34. Jet on October 24th, 2008 3:36 pm

I couldn’t tell from the vid if BRK had any points in spiked collar. . Not that a tenacity pet needs to have his damage cranked, but since spiked collar increases all damage that would increase thunderstomp damage as well wouldn’t it? BRK wasn’t having problems pulling aggro and clearly was burning stuff down without spiked collar, just wondering if points in that talent would be beneficial or a waste in that situation.

  35. Fosin on October 24th, 2008 4:41 pm

Awesome movie BRK. My gorilladin and I are lvling very fast as a solo duo and loving it….. All those annoying camps with 5-6 mobs in it are dropped in seconds rather than:
/send in Attack Cat on outside roaming mob
/wince at ganking all 6 at once because cat runs chasing the mob through the camp
    Now its just:
    /send in gorilladin
/fire volley and watch the mobs drop like flies
Just to add another note. I never have to feed my pet ever again! We’re loving the new inscription for mend pet!!!

  36. Andrew on October 24th, 2008 5:17 pm

Thanks a million for mentioning during the demo that ‘Stomp will not auto-fire unless there are multiple mobs in range.

That tied me up for 2 days reading and crying.

It never occured to me that if it wouldn’t work against one, it Would work against many…

  37. Nick S. on October 24th, 2008 5:30 pm

I’m working on a macro that causes my pet to automatically target switch… any suggestions? I’m experimenting with a focus thing where I tab targets and the macro makes a focus… not sure.

    Experienced macro-writers, help me out.

Oh, and BRK – I still like Bears better.

  38. Kamendur on October 24th, 2008 6:17 pm

    Nice vid. /props
FWIW… I’ve macroed my gorilla to turn off all autocast abilities while I’m rounding up a group then I pop a stomp and turn em back on via another macro.

Works like a champ. My first Thunder stomp always goes off when I want it to
(after I’m KC/BW etc to jack up the initial stomp numbers)

There is a thread on in in the beastmaster brk forums.

    Volley ftw.

  39. Fett on October 24th, 2008 8:24 pm

I gotta tell you BRK….. gorilladin = uber farming pet:) I went to nagrand and in a little over an hour I made 33gold in trash drops, farmed enough leather to make 26 pieces of heavy knothide leather, and farm enough tabluk steaks to cook 71 pieces with 35 steaks still uncooked. If anyone is still doubting the uberness of a gorilla… it is time for you to bite the bullet and give it a shot. I got 3 of my guildies to try one out and they all love em for farming.

  40. Carbonite on October 24th, 2008 9:33 pm

Gorillas are cool and all,but I really like my bear. Not sure I’ll get one.I’m a lowbie anyway,so the issue won’t even come up for 13 more levels.

  41. Sin on October 25th, 2008 2:56 am

Followed your advice and grabbed the same elite rare that you did- by accident. Was planning on the reddish one. Leveled easily and took him to ramps tonight. Vazruden is actually not difficult. Hardest part was the open area above the ramp. BTW, I don’t have the T5 bonus either. So, it can be done. Three pet deaths and one for me- FD wasn’t up yet.

  42. Sarai on October 25th, 2008 6:58 am

    I actually hate gorillas :(
However, after hearing ALL of my hunter-friends say how much they love theirs, I finally tamed one on my lvl 32 BE.
After grinding for awhile in STV, he’s definately starting to grow on me.

  43. Curtis on October 25th, 2008 9:01 am

Just a couple things I noticed:

    1) the HM/pet attack macro is a waste of mana when getting a bunch of mobs together. Its better to just use pet attack without HM.

    2) I’m not sure what you’re saying about standing in the thunderstomp when casting mend pet. It doesn’t matter where you stand. Healing threat has nothing to do with where you stand outside of the melee/ranged difference. Standing inside the thunderstomp actually puts you in melee range hence 110% threat to get aggro.

  44. Grainger on October 25th, 2008 9:40 am

I “think” what he meant regarding the mend pet issue is that if you stay in the thunderstomp range #1) your pet only needs 110% to regain aggro and #2) you ensure that thunderstomp will go off because the mob isn’t chasing you (i.e. if by chance the “group” only has 2 mobs at that point?)

Maybe I’m way off on that thought….

I also got the reddish/brown one (Ucha?). I like the color best and also seems as if it is the “rare” one because all I see is the white and gray ones. Have never even seen anyone else with mine (or the black one) in my travels…of course I’m on a low pop server.

I am doing SMV demons (to help gain marks while levelling my pet). I didn’t do any 65+ instances when I levelled, so my gear sucks for the most part (aside from the Merc Gladiator’s Xbow (RIP Ephoenix) and the Kara T4 gloves). thus i am a little gun-shy about pulling more than 3 at a max. I only heal at 732 per tick, and our stamina is low….but thoroughly enjoying the Gorilla. Can’t wait until my gear improves to see some better results.

  45. Kemonojin on October 25th, 2008 10:57 am

BRK, please don’t make the movies podcasts, or at least not exclusively so. Not all of us have any interest in installing invasive and pushy apple software.

My warlock has had problems with her blueberry getting hung up on things like that… if he’s going over a tree root when the fight starts, she gets to solo stuff. Always fun.

What’s the max number of things you’ve collected at once, BRK?

I think some talent tree builds would be nice, too, as a random ‘toss it out there’ thing… Both pet and hunter. Mine’s currently 59/2/0.

  46. Berg on October 25th, 2008 11:38 am

Great vid and learned some more stuff. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. It’s very much appreciated.

  47. Thradrie on October 25th, 2008 3:16 pm

Hey BRK.. Was this movie made in beta as lvl 80? Cuzmy Gorilla is lvl 70 atm. And it doesn’t Thunderstump crit anything nearly than yours. Not even with BW on.

  48. Archer on October 25th, 2008 9:48 pm

Some of us love to be told exactly how you do things then take that and maybe adapt that in our own way.

I know you mention your spec is 51/10/0 but EXACTLY where are your points?
I know you say how to talent the Gorrialdin in the video but listing it out with that would also be great if you could ^_^

  49. Clayton on October 25th, 2008 10:03 pm

Can you post a screenshot of your gorillas talent chart?

  50. Davlin-Hydraxis on October 26th, 2008 1:00 am

Alright, I took my wind serpent Jaffa, whom I have had and used religiously since level 42, and put him in the stable to try out the Gorilladin. Simply put, that was amazing. I won’t make it my main pet, but it was nice to tank Pandemonius and Prince Nexus. My guildies are shocked, I’m shocked, and Jaffa is sitting on the shelf jealous as all hell. Maybe I’ll make a vid or something. I dunno. I’ve got screen shots of the Gorilladin (Bubba) in Kara tanking Moroes and what note. It was quite honestly very awesome.
–Thanks for the vid, it helped a lot.

Tbh, show us the bits you cut with the 2k crits x10. That sounds fun.

  53. Warlord Darkwood on October 27th, 2008 3:41 pm

    Hey BRK,

I have long been the champion of the lowly Gorilla. I have had mine (Itchy) for at least a year and even before the patch he was always saying my butt with Thunderstomp. Now with the added armor and the shorter cooldown he just rocks. I ran around soloing wandering elites all day on the first day of the patch :-)
My question is about not healing unless your inside of the range of the thunderstomp. I don’t understand this concept. Consacrate is a lasting AoE affect, does Thunderstomp have a residual effect as well?

    Your the Best

    Darkwood

  54. Nicehunter on October 27th, 2008 8:22 pm

Epic Video, i was a fan of the high dps pet ( got Rak Shira) but she didn’t have the threat cabilities to tank entire groups and im making a bundle selling the leather and the grays. do u have macros for the pet special abilites? Taunt, Roar of Sacrifice and Last Stand and the other abilities?

  55. Tacoz on October 31st, 2008 11:53 am

I took my level 67 Gorilla into regular Ramparts and solo ran it all the way through with ease. Gorrila = win in my opinion.
