It’s Not Your Father’s Azeroth

Guildie: “Dude! Do you see the flying necropolis?”

BRK: “Yeah! Want to go to Tanaris and kill some scourge?”

“You bet. Let’s get three more, form a party and start taking them out.”

“Man, I can’t wait for Burning Crusade to come out!”

And a few years ago, our guild on Khaz Modan got a tank, some DPS, and a healer, and took out those scourge invaders, one at a time, very carefully.

“Watch out for the big black one! He’ll wipe you out!”

“Don’t stand too close to the pack or you’ll aggro more than one! That’s certain death!”

/fast-forward to today

Guildie: “Dude! Do you see the flying necropolis?”

BRK: “Yeah. Want to go to Tanaris and kill some scourge?”

“You bet…”

“Good. I’m in the Blasted Lands, clearing house. You go find your own farm spot, we’ve got ours. Gorilladin is tanking six at a time, and we solo’d one of the big black ones already. Got the leather pants and twenty-four necrotic runes.”

“…”

“Aww, I know you’re a holy priest. You think I don’t want to keep my priestie-karma on simmer? C’mon down, let’s get you some runes. Put looting on Free For All, make us your Focus, and attack what we’re attacking.”

/five minutes later

“How do you find them so fast?”

“Track Undead and manually casting Thunderstomp so we aggro as many as we can, even though we’re initially only attacking one. Don’t try to get any in the center; the Paladins are Consecrating now and we don’t have a chance there. Stay on the perimeter, that’s our playground.”

“Uh oh, they’re gone.”

“Watch the ziggeraut in the sky. If it disappears into a cloud, the event here is done. If it shoots out a purple beam, like that, we just follow the beam and Track Undead does the rest. Giddyup! Destruction awaits!”

We’ve been whining about not having our Tabard of the Argent Dawn for months, way before there was an achievement for it. Thank you, Blizz, for giving us the chance to get it back. Best looking tabard, ever.

Alas, it is not the Tabard of the Protector and you cannot do a /flex with sparkles with it. :/

  2. kunukia on October 26th, 2008 11:59 am

A couple of me got the tabard of the protector, :P .

Suddenly your site is too big for my browser. Seriously.

  3. kunukia on October 26th, 2008 12:02 pm

OK, the too big thing was a glitch on my end and fixed…but…

The ‘click to edit’ still does not work.

I was unable to participate in the Scourge Invasion the last time, being that I had not yet reached 60 on any character.

This time around, I’m gorilla-tanking boss mobs, got my tabard, 3/4 of the mail set, and all the trinkets, with 130+ runes to spare.

I only need the chest piece and I’ll be happy.

Brk what guild were you in on khaz modan? I was on that server at one point as well. I was in the guild the legion of the light

On my server, it’s been more like:

“Let’s go to Winterspring and kill some Scourge!”

    *half way to Winterspring*

“Oh, Winterspring isn’t being attacked anymore, let’s go to Azshara.”

    *get to Azshara*

“The attack here’s already over, but there’s still an attack in Tanaris.”

    *land in Gadgetzan*

“Attack’s over here too. Guess we have to wait for the event to start over. Let’s go do Strat for achievements.”

This thing is all about rapid response. The perfect “tiger team”, in my opinion, is:

1 Warlock (pull the team together,DoTs)
1 Mage (port to the nearest encounter point, AoE)
    1 Hunter (huntervision, tankorilla)
    1 Tankadin (consecrate)
    1 healer of preference

you can probably sub out the lock if everyone agrees to have a mutual hearth point but even then it’s useful in case someone has recently burnt their stone.

Ideally, even Azshara (by my calculation the most remote FP from a capital) should be no more than 6-7 minutes from initial call to action.

    Landed in flame crest

/cast track undead (because no one else is looking for these things right?)

ride into mob of alliance, eat a HoJ and trinket out then eat another and get the bejesus beat out of me -_-

we outnumber the alliance 2 to one and i found them all lol

I wasn’t even playing the game the last time the Scourge invaded!

I was in EPL when the first ziggurats appeared. A quick trip to IF to see the reeeeeally big one, then back to EPL to hand in qs, then off to Winterspring and Tanaris for Scourge-killing and some unintentional PvP :D

Great fun, so glad I stayed in this Saturday :D

I tried this event, then gave up in disgust when I realized it was a “Line Forms Here” situation.

I’ll go do something that doesn’t involve frantic tag-spamming, thanks.

  11. Giulls on October 26th, 2008 9:12 pm

Being on a PST server but being on EST time, when I woke up today there was absolutely nobody on Winterspring. As a Paladin I managed to solo all four camps and all the Shadows of Doom and get me that lovely tabard!

I have to agree with you, BRK, I hated the fact that I couldn’t get the best tabard in the game from the best faction in the game. My Paladin was but a youngling at that time. I’m so glad they allowed it again.

  12. Telwar on October 26th, 2008 11:55 pm

    Yeah.

It was pretty easy tagging and bagging on my paladin (”HOW many insta-cast attacks?”), but pure freaking hell on my priest. I resorted to just SW:Ding them to get the insta-tag. Grouping with a shaman and mage helped.

They really do need to increase the spawn rates on these. As is, people are swarming them and fighting for the spawns. I remember last time, my guild would get a group and clear a spawn by ourselves.

  13. Michi and Taiki on October 27th, 2008 12:25 am

You were on KM? Geez, we were in the midst of greatness without knowing it. =( When did you leave?

  14. DC on October 27th, 2008 6:29 am

Don’t you think AoE pulling and tagging everything in sight could be a bit rude if there are lots of other players farming the same area?

Ah, right. You’re BRK and everyone else’s video game adventures come second to yours, just as I’m sure you’re one of those guys who can’t hear a story told by someone else without immediately launching into your own similar — and naturally, better — story to show them up.

I believe you’ve claimed to be married in some previous posts. With all the time you spend on WoW, all the time you spend bragging/blogging about WoW, all the time you put into podcasting about WoW, and all the time you spend writing for WoW Insider, you either have a wife or a job, but certainly not both.

  15. Freakangel on October 27th, 2008 7:25 am

    @ DC:

Sounds like a paladin suffering from Gorrilladin envy…

I think BRK needs to rename Gorrilladin to “IAOEBetterThanU” or even better “RespecHolyNHeal”. :)

  16. Shulka on October 27th, 2008 8:54 am

It sure does seem to be a case of ‘line starts here’, doesnt it? :S I guess your best shot is trying at odd hours, when the rest of your server sleeps; anything but Sunday afternoons.

The original Scourge Invasion event is one of my fondest memories in WoW, and I’m glad to get a chance to revisit that. On the other hand, it’s a bit of a shame that the tabard can be earned all over again, and this time things are so darned easy. The challenge was what made it so much fun…”Oh God, another of those killer elites! I’ve got your back, Seeker Thompson!”
Well, at least my old set ‘of Undead Slaying’ can still remind me of those times. ^^

  17. Dijin on October 27th, 2008 9:48 am

@DC: Why are you reading the blog of someone you obviouly have no respect for? Why dont you just leave it to the people who do?

Great day Sunday, only recently got my hunter to 70 – am a lock convert!

    Got my gorilla tammed

Got 3/4 and my tabard with the Scourge

Got off hand, Gun and bow from KZ

    Awesome all in all!

Constanntly setting Aoe traps for tagging goodness:)

  18. Capn John on October 27th, 2008 11:09 am

@ DC – You’re absolutely right. In a situation like this, using AOE instant-cast attacks in the thick of the action to tag as many Mobs as possible would be considered very rude, but having played MMOS for several years it’s also exactly the behaviour I’d expect from my fellow players, so you learn to work around it.

This is why BRK told his friend: “Don’t try to get any in the center; the Paladins are Consecrating now and we don’t have a chance there. Stay on the perimeter, that’s our playground.”

  19. Nyctreinar on October 27th, 2008 2:02 pm

This is positively the worst thing that Blizzard has done. It brings back nightmares of “mob camping” in Everquest, combined with a total inability to get anything useful done, like banking, AH selling or buying, or quest turn-ins.

This event was obviously designed by EA’s people. Blizzard has a record of doing it right. This just ain’t right.

I have not yet decided if I am going to stop playing until Nov 13th, or just get a refund on WotLK and stop playing, period.

In short, this event sucks rocks.

  20. Bighappy on October 27th, 2008 2:08 pm

I still haven’t figured out how to do this event….

  21. Aedh on October 27th, 2008 4:37 pm

    *le sigh*
my 70 hunter has the tabard…bu tnot my baby BE Paladin for whom it would be way more awesomer.
Its a big kick in the face because mid 50 toons can pick up the quests to kill the scourge…..but cant.

Being sick had its advantages yesterday. Went to Tanaris, the zigguraut was up but for some reason there were no crystals nor undead to kill so I headed to Azshara. Landed in Valormok, checked Wowhead for the possible locations and checked them. Nada. Decided to take a little swim to get my exploration done when the zone-wide emote came up. Went back to the beach and there the ziggaraut was and no one else was in sight. Went to town. I was only using a throw-away hyena becuase I had been off and on tracking Nuramoc (no luck, alas) and I told my guild and had a paladin meet me there. We farmed the entire zigguraut. We had two shadows left by the time other people showed up. Final count: 104 runes and the mail chest piece.

  23. The Lords Breed on October 30th, 2008 9:52 am

    200 stones in 40 minutes.

Tier 6 prot paladin, had a whole crystal to myself, kept pulling the entire spawn site at one time.

Only problem was I kept outranging the far side and they’d evade, had to start grabbing 3/4ths then shield pulling the rest in.

    ^_^
