Spirit Beast DPS is Borked

BRK » 23 November 2008 » In Gear, Pets, PvE » 28 Comments

Got to run the new Caverns of Time – the Culling of Stratholme. Lots of fun, some loot, and a great time testing out the unnamed Spirit Beast. Look at that combined DPS against Mal’Ganis! 1945 is nothing to sneeze at.

Our Feral Druid tank is level 80, but the Warrior and Death Knight were level 78, same as us and Spirit Beast.

Speaking of whom, it is quite confirmed that the Spirit Beast’s DPS is lower than what it should be. With the Longevity talent, his Spirit Strike cooldown is indeed reduced from ten seconds to seven, that’s fine. However, the delayed-damage debuff he puts on his target is still ten seconds; it should also be seven.

We went to the training dummies and did our research. Here’s what happenes.

Spirit Beast attacks with Spirit Strike. His cooldown starts at seven seconds.

The Spirit Strike debuff on the target starts counting at ten seconds.

When the Spirit Strike cooldown is up, it checks the target. It sees there’s a Spirit Strike debuff on the target and says, “Hmm. There’s a more powerful spell already cooking here. Better not cast Spirit Strike again.”

The Spirit Strike debuff continues counting down for another three seconds, during which time the Spirit Strike spell sits on the pet’s action bar, no cooldown, but not autocasting.

Once the Spirit Strike debuff goes ‘boom’, the autocasting Spirit Strike spell says, “OK, there’s no Spirit Strike debuff on the mob, I can autocast now.” And it does.

Apparently this is a known bug. We’ll let you know when/if it gets fixed.

But as a result, the Spirit Beast does not do more DPS than a Devilsaur. That pet remains the top-dog DPS machine for now.

And if Blizz had let us play with a Spirit Beast in the beta, we would’ve found and reported this back in August! /huff

    Sorry to hear that :(

  2. Senzir on November 23rd, 2008 9:46 am

I friend in my guild found that too. Disappointing. I really hope they fix it soon.

  3. kunukia on November 23rd, 2008 10:12 am

Oh noes! I don’t even want one until they fix that. Not.

  4. Regis on November 23rd, 2008 10:19 am

Er, well at least your pet did outdamage a warrior of the same level.

  5. Euripedes on November 23rd, 2008 10:29 am

The warrior did have superior DPS to the pet, so I’m betting the warrior just died a few times.

As warriors are wont to do :P

  6. Rilgon Arcsinh on November 23rd, 2008 12:20 pm

    It was reported though. :P

  7. Step on November 23rd, 2008 12:27 pm

IF you have more then one target though and the debuff is on your pets target he will cast spirit strike on another target instead so you have two debuffs running.

Infact, as we can see in wowhead, spirit strike must stack 5 times, but this part is broken…

  9. The Lords Breed on November 23rd, 2008 1:21 pm

This has been a known issue for a long, long time, and had been reported over and over since Beta.

This buff does not stack five times, the people on WoWHead are doofs. They are misreading the icon and treating the icon as if its spell wording. If it stacked up to five times, the explosion effect would never go off because each stack would reset the timer preventing it from exploding until it got five stacks. That’s 45 with Longevity ( 7 seconds cooldown, 5 times = 35 seconds then 10 seconds to ‘bloom’ ) which means on anything that’s not a boss it’s completely worthless.

Ow, thanks. And there are bugs, thats true, but after 2 or 3 patches there will be none.
At least I hope so ;)

  11. Ptolemay on November 23rd, 2008 1:39 pm

I couldnt edit, so it is a doublepost.
U said it would be worthless… imagine 5 spirit-blooms procing on you in arena… thats OUCH.

  12. The Lords Breed on November 23rd, 2008 1:46 pm

It’s a magical effect, thus cleansable, and waiting 45 seconds for a spell to go off to deal 700 damage when five stacked? I hardly call that an ouch, my autoswings/auto shots can hit for that.

Five stacking is worthless. They misread the move.

    old news is old?

but on a more serious note, yes this is a bug and it was even reported several times in the beta. you might not have been able to get a spirit beast in the beta, but other beta testers were able to get it and test it out. they also reported it on the forums and in the game, so this information has been around for a while and blizzard has known about this for a while (probably before august).

though i agree with you that blizz should have increased the spawn rate so more than a lucky few players could have tested out and complained enough about this to get it changed.

Are you sure BRK that your dmg is really around the 1900 mark combined? I thought that if the addon that you’re using is Recount, that your pets displayed dmg is merely a component of your own total dps. Please correct me if I’m wrong. But I’m fairly sure that’s how the recount works anyway.

  18. Elfangor on November 23rd, 2008 5:14 pm

Hmm…Koth, I think it’s in the settings. You can either merge or split your pet’s dps with your own.

  19. Tunza on November 23rd, 2008 6:41 pm

Gratz on the SB BRK. Great to see you achieve your goal so early in LK.

Any chance you could show your SB some respect and name it? It drives me crazy to see huntards wandering around without naming their pets. Where’s the love? Do they call their children “Human Baby”?

Current bug report thread for his Spirit Strike on the WoW forums, though it’s been reported before, would be nice to get a blue response.

    /sign If you want ;X

I thought that if the addon that you’re using is Recount, that your pets displayed dmg is merely a component of your own total dps. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Recount can be configured to include a pet in his hunter’s DPS totals, or counted separately. We prefer the latter so we can analysis pet-performance. All our damage-meters have our pet separated from our own.

    1900 DPS. That’s a fact, jack.

  23. Xoshe on November 23rd, 2008 9:51 pm

I’ll also point out that it’s not just Spirit Strike. All pet abilities that give a debuff on the target will not recast until the debuff fades.

  24. Blazul on November 24th, 2008 5:32 am

    Got mine today \o/

“But as a result, the Spirit Beast does not do more DPS than a Devilsaur. That pet remains the top-dog DPS machine for now.”

So is the SB number 2 in dps, or much further down the line?

  26. Euripides (not Euripedes the mage) on November 24th, 2008 2:07 pm

    @Tunza

Sometimes it just takes us a while to decide on a good name :)

  27. Lerta on November 24th, 2008 3:20 pm

Inscription has an ability to rename Hunter Pets. Wouldn’t want to spell your SB’s name wrong and have to find another one :*(

  28. Colo on November 24th, 2008 8:38 pm

Well, what a weak dk was that? I run 1200dps+ constantly in instances…and I am only lvl 72 with usual questgear.
