Pet Alert!

While normally we leave most pet-info posts to Mania, this one is important enought that we feel we need to post it ASAP.

One of our five favorite pets from WotLK is on the endangered-list. The LSD Wasp of Doom, aka. the Sapphire Hive Queen, may no longer be tamable once 3.0.8 arrives. If you’ve ever wanted to try her out, you now know that your time is limited.

Thank you to JayCanuck for the PTR-pic, and of course Mania for keeping all the pet-info so we don’t have to.

Noooo! I’m using her right now!
    I even named her WaspOfDoom.
    What shall I do?!

  2. BRK on January 4th, 2009 6:08 pm

@Matt: Nothing. if you’ve got her tamed, you’re set.

  3. Zanpher on January 4th, 2009 6:13 pm

Well yeah, its a wasp, one of the most worthless pets in Wow :) Why even tame her?

  4. Faulsey on January 4th, 2009 6:18 pm

-tries to dodge BRK’s spam filter, which is giving him heck-

Hey, nothing wrong with a good Armour-reducing pet now, is there?

Reading that post, I find it bizarre that the ghost “crocs” can still be tamed, yet this wasp can’t. What’s wrong with taming a rare wasp, compared to taming an ooze that thinks it’s a Crocolisk?

  5. Different Spencer on January 4th, 2009 6:27 pm

The wasp is doing LSD. Big no-no for blizz’s PR. The ghosts? They’re just insane.

  6. Darksentinel on January 4th, 2009 6:56 pm

Eh, I like wasps. They look cool, and the Sting debuff is nice, giving us slightly more dps when soloing and increasing raid dps when Feral Faerie Fire isn’t present.

  7. Alphakhan on January 4th, 2009 7:21 pm

I went out and tamed mine as soon as I read the comment in the post earlier.

  8. JayCanuck on January 4th, 2009 7:28 pm

Sweet, I made bigredkitty.net! This makes my day (well that and that the “stuttering” pet bug is gone in 3.0.8) :-D

Also, just for the record, my name’s JayCanuck, not Jacanuck ;-p

  9. Spencer on January 4th, 2009 8:20 pm

Good to know! As I cant check mania at work. I had one and had to ditch it when I got my spirit beast. I think its pretty so Ill pick one up again today. My last one was PrincessDie. I like the buzzing sound to.
I actually got more compliments from players on the wasp than I did the spirit beast.

  10. Saottleoveer on January 4th, 2009 8:27 pm

Why?! Is there some secret bonus associated with that specific skin that I’ve been unaware of? I tamed her just the other week and am really loving the sting effects, but surely there is nothing the queen can do that any other wasp in the game can’t?

The only thing that comes to mind is that because she is obviously one of the best looking pets in the game hunters are spamming her cave and preventing other players from completing the quest… which if true is just daft.

Either way, as a relatively new player (nearly a year old, bless) can anyone confirm if I won’t loose her from my stable should this silliness actually make it through intact via the patch?

  11. Fobok on January 4th, 2009 8:38 pm

Glad I managed to tame her already, then. :) (In fact, just made 80 with her the day before I stopped playing for Christmas.)

Don’t understand why they’d be making this change, though. Maybe it’s the size?

  12. Sarai on January 4th, 2009 9:18 pm

Eh, this doesn’t bother me too much, since I’ve always preferred the Outlands skins. The Sholazar wasps look too…buggy… for me.

Gonna get a bogflare needler when my chosen hunter is high enough, then try to farm the firefly pet. ;)

  13. Errain on January 4th, 2009 9:35 pm

I got one tamed, but why is blizz removing the orange wasp… i like orange…

  14. Edamil on January 4th, 2009 9:56 pm

For anyone who doesn’t know this, the LSD Wasp of Doom is straight out of AQ. The mob-type is just changed. So maybe Blizzard wants to keep some kind of continuity in that these are Silithids and not beasts.

Hunters who tamed the Grimtotem Spirit Guide still have theirs, so I sincerely hope so.

They’ll have to pry Ayamiss from my cold, dead hands, otherwise.

  16. Garouk, Tauren Hunter of Gilneas on January 4th, 2009 10:31 pm

Thanks to this quick post, I made room for my not-so-little Wasp of Doom in my stable. She’s my next pet I’m planning to level to 80. She’s been named Doomsting, to go with Ironfeather the Imperial Eagle, and Fangmaul, my bear who’s been with me since I could first tame meself a pet. I still need to get ole’ Fangmaul to 80, though… He needs to be getting more playtime soon.

  17. Tyger on January 4th, 2009 10:34 pm

I just got my WoD. Grinding with her now. It’s wonderful. Thanks BRK and JayCanuck!

  18. Darksentinel on January 4th, 2009 10:50 pm

@Sarai: Outlands skins ftw, go pink! :P

  19. Greckor on January 4th, 2009 11:38 pm

Oh Thank the Earthmother! I was so worried I’d lose my sweet littel Benihime ty for taking my fear away with your post brk

  20. Aaron on January 5th, 2009 12:20 am

Got mine. BRK, any suggestions for responding to QQ from the lesser classes when raiding with a Devilsaur, the LSD Wasp or other large pet? I’m sick of catching grief just because I want to help the raid out with (more than) my share of MQoSRDPS.

  21. Zandilar on January 5th, 2009 1:22 am

My hunter tamed a Rhino and called it Obnoxious. Obnoxious went into the stables and hasn’t been used since.

Large pets are annoying to me (even on my hunter) because they block my view and make targeting in a crowded environment a nightmare (especially if you’re targeting something by clicking, which I don’t do very often). I am also one of those people who like to see what I’m killing, especially when I’m tanking (either on my DK or my prot warrior), because sometimes it’s hard to tell if I’m facing the right way (yes, even with messages on the screen, messages which get lost against a big red pet!). I would be far happier if Blizzard came up with some kind of pet shrinking potion or food, that way hunters can take the pets they want to take into the instance, and the rest of us aren’t annoyed by their size.

I would also be happier if they introduced a slider to turn down the stomp sound from certain pets (Obnoxious’s thundering feet is the other reason he’s in the stables), but I can live with it the way it is.

  22. Tzivya on January 5th, 2009 3:30 am

I went to tame one, and decided I liked the powder blue ones there more. =)

  23. Rikaku on January 5th, 2009 5:17 am

Lets just hope that those who still have this pet after the patch can still feed their pet. I know a couple pets before who got “fixed” and couldn’t be healed, couldn’t be fed. D=

  24. Korvenuz on January 5th, 2009 5:28 am

well, happiness can come through pet talents now, so there is hope yet for the no-feeding Blizz tactic

  25. JokkerofLightBringer on January 5th, 2009 9:24 am

Got my Queen last night after reading this post…

    Thanks Again BRK

  26. Fahr & Bacon on January 5th, 2009 9:41 am

Oh what a bummer. I will not be level 78 probably for another 2 weeks, and I’m guessing the patch will be in by then. If I were ambitious I’d take advantage of the volley “problem” by taking a day off work, and leveling to 78 REALLY fast so I could get the WoD… guess I’m lazy, so I’ll just work.

Gratz to all of you who have the LSD Wasp and all who have released her after having her as a companion. She will be a nice pet to see on a hunter in a year or two for sure.

  27. Rikaku on January 5th, 2009 10:36 am

well, happiness can come through pet talents now, so there is hope yet for the no-feeding Blizz tactic

That’s true. But it’d still make it a very hard pet to manage if it can’t receive outside buffs and heals in say a raid. Like I said, it all depends on just how far Blizzard decides to nerf it. I remember the Serpents before they were tameable couldn’t be fed, and I’ve heard Blizzard has removed pets from Hunters before, whether that’s true or not I can’t confirm.

The only reason I can see them removing it from tameablity is due to it’s size when tamed (it seems much larger than other wasps, but that might be me). If so, I can see that being fixed and it put back on tameable lists.

  28. Fearstalker on January 5th, 2009 10:49 am

Went and tamed one last night. Was gonna get the black warpstalker, but, since she’s bugged (was gonna use her for pvp, but that doesn’t work with the bug) I grabbed the queen bee instead..

  29. Bonesaw on January 5th, 2009 11:00 am

I agree with Zandilar about the size issue. I tamed one of the Shalozar wasps and leveled it up to 80 to use in instances. However, the tank I mainly run with had so many targeting issues because of the wasps size that I had to stop using it. I really like the way they look but if its gonna make my tank’s life even more difficult it’s not worth it. Anyone else have this issue?

  31. Fearstalker on January 5th, 2009 4:17 pm

Blue post today confirming that the non-tameable status on the ptr is “working as intended”. Get them while they’re hot, before they’re not.

It can’t be a size issue. They shrunk Core Hounds and Devilsaurs, after all (they were much larger early on, on the PTR)… and if they can shrink them, then there’s no reason why they can’t shrink the WoD (or the Rhino, or the Devilsaur, which needs more shrinking IMHO as a Tank).

There must be some other reason for this.

  33. Elfangor on January 5th, 2009 6:23 pm

Nooo…there goes my chance at the WoD. :(

I’d like to go get it, and spend some time looking for Loque – problem is, my hunter’s stuck at 72, and I’m levelling my Holy-spec Cockroach for the guild healer shortage.

    Ah well.

  34. Drazmor on January 5th, 2009 8:32 pm

That post felt like a WWF commercial…

  35. Rikaku on January 5th, 2009 11:51 pm

    @Zandilar:
Yeah I’m just trying to think of why. I know my reason isn’t logical, but removing them isn’t logical either. Especially considering this pet made it all the way through beta.

Maybe it’s a bug? Like instead of wrong pets becoming tameable after a patch, this one’s intameable due to a bug? I dunno. All I know is they’re removing the only Wasp skin I actually liked from the hunter pet list =(

  36. Anonymous on January 6th, 2009 5:52 am

Anyone checked the other 2 wasps with identical model? (”Sapphire Hive Drone” and “Sapphire Hive Wasp”) They do have identical size and model…

  37. Ranger on January 6th, 2009 7:03 am

Power leveled to 78 last night to grab mine before they are gone. Not sure of the raid viability of it but it will remain as a stable candy for sure.

  38. Sagemire on January 6th, 2009 8:34 am

For those wondering if it’s a bug (glitch):
    http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=14133416557&sid=1
Bliz confirms it to be “working as intended”.

Luckily, I was in Sholazar yesterday for Oracle dailies and realized I should go tame with while I was there. Glad I did, I hear today might be patch day.

I like this pet for PvP. Not for it’s abilities, but because I love watching a giant wasp buzz around a crowd of horde, stinging them in bestial wrath mode, while I stand up on a platform and shoot people from a distance.

  39. yunk on January 6th, 2009 10:37 am

I was thinking the same as anonymous above, if the reason is that they don’t want the Silithid models to be tameable then they’d remove the others as well.

  40. Jack on January 8th, 2009 12:55 pm

As much as I thought it would be cool to have her, it just isn’t woth having a pet no tank will ever let you bring (or bring again).
Never mind soloing or just trying to do routine tasks.
It gets in the way of everything.
    Too big.
Get Blacksting or one of the drones if you need a wasp.

  41. Thelittleone on January 9th, 2009 5:33 pm

Thanks again BRK – read your post at work Monday, came home went up 4 bubbles to level 78 and got her tamed – woot. My, she is big though but she does a great job.

  42. Ikult on January 15th, 2009 5:56 pm

As far as I can tell, the only reason the Hive Queen is becoming un-tameable would be because she is identical to one in AQ. As the ones in AQ are not tameable, they probably want to have consistency and make her un-tameable to match.
For those people saying it’s because of her size, stop the spread of nonsense. The wasps that surround the Queen’s hive remain the same size when tamed, I’ve tested this myself. So it is not due to size after taming, otherwise the other Northrend Wasps would be un-tameable as well. I honestly have no issues either as a tank or huntress with the Northrend Wasps’ size- they fly so high that I can easily see underneath them, and rarely have targeting issues (again, either tanking or targeting around my pet while looting/skinning).
