I’m sorry.
This build seems way way WAY too stupid to be considered effective. Allow me to elaborate. (Considering 25-man pve only, pay attention to this TEJ flamers)
1. I don’t see the point of barrage without aimed shot. Don’t tell me you’re going to use multishot in a single-target DPS rotation. Gluth and Sartharion whelps are an exception, not a rule.
2. Silencing Shot is not a pve talent. Worthless.
3. Imp. Steady shot provides less DPS boost than imp. tracking. I don’t see why any MM shouldn’t be specced with at least 5 points in the talent.
4. UF is not necessary. More than 11 and less than 50 points in BM is a waste. Better put this in imp. hunter’s mark because you WILL be the marker in any raid due to marked for death and only a GCD to spend on the mark.
5. Aimed shot is still the most damaging shot. With BoW/replenishment, mana pot and the occasional viper/RF (you got readiness for this) you shouldn’t have any mana problems. Especially to spend 3 points in efficiency for that.
6. Since you’re using steady and arcane shots in your rotation, survival instincts > 8% pet damage ( ~= 2.4% total dps boost for MM < dps boost from SI)
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ctbMzLZ0eVfMIzGxog0Vox is the tree I’d choose if by some miracle or divine intervention MM would be DPS king.

Congratulations Nass! I’m downloading it now to listen to it.
Hopefully, I can be a bit more well rounded as a blogger after seeing it from all the angels. We’ll see.
And thanks BRK for making the podcast! It’s a great listen.
Now that that’s finished… Where’s Alexstrasza when I need her?
You really must hate us (I say us because I play pally atm!) paladins indeed! You use Judgment of Wisdom to put JoW on the target, there’s nothing about Blessing in there. Just a heads up.
Other than that, always pleasant to listen to your podcasts. I love your language, simply put.
Not really. When you’re on our side, we have no idea what you’re doing. When you’re against us, we can’t kill you. Aside from that, it’s all good.
And the build does include Aimed Shot, we just forgot it.
roflmao I laughed so hard I cried during the intro song
Hey, that’s not the spec we went over, BRK! =P You swapped a few things, and you don’t have Focused Aim…I’m confuzzed.
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ctbMzxZMeVfRIzGxox0Ao
This was the one, either non-hit capped, or hit capped taking either rapid recoup, or wild quiver. GOSH!
Grrr…your spam filter is starting to make me mad.
I’m a moonkin druid. (On days when I’m not resto.) Moonkin aura is raidwide. In addition to 5% spell crit, most raiding Moonkin spec into Improved Moonkin Aura, which gives 3% haste.
Dang it, please link it to us and we’ll fix that ASAP.
The comment awaiting moderation has the spec in it. I’m guessing most 10-manners aren’t hit capped, so two in Focused is better than Rapid Recoup. Sorry to be picky, but it’s kinda important.
Anyway, thanks again for being my host! I had a ton of fun, and it was nice to meet you.
hey BRK, just a stupid question, u the only GUY hunter blogger out there, not countin bear butt?
BRK got a call at 6:40
HEY
I’m a man! I’m just prettier than everyone else.
So is Rilgon, despite him being blue and… well… and alien.
As far as the podcast goes, I am wondering if Nassira checked out the Lock and Load talent from survival or not. If we’re going to concentrate on it as much as we are, should we not look into it quite a bit?
Maybe I should try my hand at math.
/snap
OW! MY DIGITS!
@Nass,
im no fancy mathematic hunter but, the 5% from imp track should be equal to Ranged wep spec, why just because 5% is 5%. im not a mathematic hunter, i just figure out which spec will gives best dps and go with it. but it should be equal.
Theres is different specs for different trees. some do the reset bw spec (thats getting nerfed in the pathc). When i try marks huntering i use a steady rotation with my spec. im bm right now because i put out high dps with it. however i was able to do very good dps with this rotation and the auto shot part happens on its own:
Serpent Sting, Steady Shot, Arcane/Aimed shot, steady shot, when serpent sting is almost done chimera shot, itll reset the serpent sting, then do the steady, arcane again and repeat. I find that to be not the best rotation but a effective one.
Also you can try to be a marks, survival hybrid. have trueshot aura then all the way down to expose weakness. thats a good spec with some nice marks points in it.
@Errain: I’m surprised Rilgon hasn’t popped his head up to correct you on this
But yeah, a lot of Hunters bloggers (and bloggers in general) seem to be female, or maybe that’s just the ones I pay attention to =D
“they’re not as dirty and naughty as you think” awwwwwwwwwww………
@ Kalimac
There’s really no standard rotation anymore – I like to call it a “shot priority” wherein you fire your most damaging shots as they become available. Because Chimera is 10 seconds, Steady Shot 2, and Arcane 6, you’re going to be changing things up a little in order to hit them all right as they come up. I’ll be FRAPsing an example of this soon. Without having the need to allow Auto Shot through holes, you can now just hit shots immidiately, no wait time required.
Hey BRK, great podcast as always, and thanks to Nassira for representing us MM hunters. As an avid Marksman for the last 2 years I strongly disagree with some of the talent choices that were made in this spec and have specific reasons as to why. It’s too much to post here but I’m going to email you, BRK, with changes and explanation as to why.
Obviously, people can choose to spec however they wish, but when you’re attempting to teach less informed players on how and why to spec for raid dps, it’s best to ensure that the spec you provide them is based of factual data instead of personal preference. From there people can add or remove talents to suit their own play style.
That intro song had me in stitches. “Seriously, have you seen my pet? It’s a sporebat, or maybe it’s a bunneh, I’m not really sure I haven’t seen it in a while.”
That cracked me up completely. You’re turning me into a fanboy, stop it.
@TEJ – your build is worthless. One glance shows me at least 8 points completely misspent as an MM Hunter. Stop embarassing the class.
@BRK – Let the guests talk. Specially the ones with silky smooth schmexy female voices.
@Nass – you raid with other MM Hunters. Then I will forgive you for your choice of trees. If you did, you would see how inadequate the current (pre-patch) MM tree is.
However, it is obvious you come to the table with knowledge based on personal testing (unlike TEJ who just parrots crap he reads on other forums) and I respect that.
I personally would have taken Silencing Shot but I live on a PVP server and just walking to the shop down the road can result in being jumped by something trying to BBQ me.
Don’t have time to stop and re=spec…:)
Excellent cast BRK and Nass.
Shall download when i go home, just listened to the survivalist podcast this morning.
I was going to write a nice rebuttal but the spam filter did it again. So here’s a shortened version.
I made a mistake, shit happens. I’ve been playing MM before you created your character and during the time BMs started to come out on top.
(BTW, MM didn’t get a single buff except fixing that glyph/marked for death bug, so claiming it’s inadequate is plain retarded. (That chimera shot fix isn’t a dps buff either))
@TEJ – You are a self aggrandizing little attention whore. Nothing more. I’ve been playing my Hunter since day one of retail. Nov 23rd, 2004. He was among the very first hunters on the server and has been all 3 specs during his career.
You are not a unique snowflake and no one here is buying your regurgitated crap.
TEJ made a mistake in his mm build.
But Nassiras is just wrong too.
I am playing mm by myself quite along time in WotlK now and i am doing my highest dps with this specc (using arc. shot glyph): http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ctbMzLZ0eVfMIzMxog0Aox
lol, I hear BRK’s phone going again (those that listen to WoW Insider too will know what I’m talking about).
Still having issues with the mic?
Well, I’m listening to the podcast now. Back to that. Thanks for the podcast, BRK. ^_^ I’ve been curious about MM for a while now. Now I can get a better idea of what it’s all about (though I’ll probably stay BM even after the nerfs, I just love the pets).
Ha ha.
For someone who played since release and apparently very proud of it, as if it makes you a better person, you sure display profound knowledge of the class. Oh wait you never actually bothered to explain yourself and just said the driven-into-the-ground “TEJ is so-and-so” crap.
/sigh.
* looks *
Ah, I see BRK edited the spec in question. Now to comment on it.
I assume the hunter in question isn’t 263-hit rated , hence 2/3 FA. Since I’ve no idea about the gear he’s using, I’ll let it go as long as you get hitcapped with it. However, I still think you will get more DPS with 5/5 imp. tracking. Since it affects Serpent sting in 3.0.8, these points will surely become mandatory.
After some thought and consideration of DPM values, 5/5 effieciency ftw. You’ll need it for some high mana instants.
Since UR is getting a 5% nerf next patch, I’d recommend taking it away and do the usual 1x/51+/7 spec. 5 points won’t be worth that much damage.
Rapid recuperation + 2x RF is very important for mana efficiency as MM, especially at lower tiers of gear where replenishment doesn’t scale well enough to keep you at 90% mana all the time.
BRK you crack me up! I literally woke my GF when I heard that song late at night. And I agree, let the females with the voices that are way better than your gruffy Hunter voice talk.
Ness, thanks for the work… BRK, these podcasts sure are fun and interesting.
The spec… meh. I WOULD grab Imp Tracking, but I can see this spec for what its worth too.
Nass, you did an awesome job!
I say more BRK voice.
hello brk
it was awsome
i’m a MM myself and was waiting for a MM hunter to come on your podcast and its great.
i used to have my doubts about aimed shot , thought it would cost too much mana for the amount of damage it did.
i have aimed shot now since its just another instant cast i have put in my shot rotation as i could use it when chimera and arcane shot are both on cooldown.
on the efficiency i sort of disagree as when you’re out of mana you can always use rapid shot , readiness if rapidshot is on cooldown , and that with rapid recuperation [2 points in it] lowers the cost of all your shots etc. making u gain more mana then you usualy get without rapidfire + RF and it gets you full mana in about 5/6/7 secconds
keep up the good work BRK and looking foreward to your next podcast
On Improved Tracking vs. Unleashed Fury –
Please see my latest post which explains why I choose UF over IT.
I’m glad some of you disagree with my spec – as I was going over things with BRK, there were a few things I was caught off guard with. There was no pre-review or test run for this interview – raw, spur of the moment, and quickly going in directions I didn’t prepare for. Of course, with more time and with some spreadsheets and real examples, I could further explain myself and also explain that I’m not running with that spec, either. =) There was confusion as to whether it was for 10 or 25 man, what kind of gear “we” had, etc., and also not a lot of talk time for me to get in depth with many of the talents, for example explaining that for one out of the 3 MM hunters we run with to have IHM WOULD be beneficial, and someone SHOULD take it. Do I? No. Not to say others shouldn’t. If the setup were clearer with more defined boundaries, making an MM spec that suits those specifications would’ve been much simpler. BUT – BRK likes energy, speed, and shorter podcasts, so that’s what we got! No problem with that. At least we went over the essentials.
I’d rather prefer this build for my hunter… I find it much more interesting
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cAb0zZceVfRhzGeoxhVoL
Yeah, so have I, and I don’t treat others like worthless pieces of crap, either.
Intelligent and skilled players have an obligation to assist the less aware players around them in a kind, approachable manner. You, on the other hand, fly directly in the face of that. You give old-school Hunters (of which I’m one) a bad name, and I have no idea why BRK hasn’t banned you from commenting yet.
Maybe he’s more insane than we give him credit for.
And @Nass: I still disagree that UF is worth more than IT. When my pet is 400-ish DPS and I’m 2200-2500 DPS, that means UF is 60 DPS (next patch) and IT is 110 DPS (next patch when it works on Serpent Sting). We don’t have any mechanicals in the current raid environment, so until we do, IT >>>> UF. Plus you don’t have to waste further points in BM to get it.
7/57/7 > all, baby.
And yes, to answer the question once and for all, I’m male, both behind the keyboard and in-game. Being eloquent isn’t a sign of being female.
TEJ has some good points so don’t just pass over his comments with a it’s just TEJ being TEJ.
I agree with his points on mana and aimed shot as far has a mark’s hunter goes.
I’ve specced and glyphed for max mana/damage for aimed shot and with both glyphs and barrage + imp barrage, my aimed shot is the second lowest mana using shot by a lot (steady is still lower), crits almost every other time, and ‘approaches’ the plain vanilla chimera shot for damage. Notice I said approaches, not gets close or equals. And that’s not including the chimera – serpent damage.
But that’s just me, it WILL be different for others. I’m just a lowly level 76 so no raid runs yet.
I’ve tried to work arcane shot into my rotation but at this point I haven’t been very successful. With my glyph/spec setup, I just get a horrible ROI with arcane. Plus, every time I look at my Recount and WWS numbers, I’m extremely satisfied with my aimed output. I’m stuck with aimed shot for better or worse as much as I am with my favorite pet, a bear who’s been with me since I first set foot in Ashenvale! I’ll put more effort into that post-patch if needed though. I just don’t get has much in-game time to test.
This got cut off my post above so…
Looking forward to listening to the podcast, and thanks BRK for getting a Markmanship hunter on! That’s always been the spec I’ve enjoyed playing the most, so I always love to hear fellow marks hunters thoughts. And thanks to Nassira and Rilgon as well, whose blogs I’ve only recently discovered. Funny, I’ve been reading BRK for long time, who would have thought just clicking their names would’ve taken me to their blogs!
@ Torgall
Wait until 3.0.8 before using arcane shots. Right now their DPM sucks balls. After steady shot gets nerfed you’ll use it much more to compensate for the damage loss and whatever blizzard’s hunter “expert” smoked when he came up with the idea.
@ Nass
I agree with your points. For now. After the patch it’ll be different.
I’m not certain how. Aimed is more expensive than Arcane. And until you get a decent amount of ArPen (which is not worth getting), Arcane is going to hit harder than Aimed, for less mana, and have a faster cooldown.
Chimera > Arcane > Steady priority rotation. Weave in Aimed next patch when Arcane is as cheap as a Steady.
@TEJ
You sir, have managed to become incredibly predictable. Like many who troll, you have become someone who only finds it worthwhile to point out the mistakes of others (at least in your overly inflated opinion), while hiding behind the anonymity the internet allows.
It seems you would be better served running a blog of your own, where you can freely point out the (from your perspective, at least) stupidity of others in your own forum, while being read by people who are interested in your brand of “criticism”.
Sadly, it’s apparent that the sort of magnifying glass that would come with such a venture would simply be too much for you. For that, I brand you both callow and cowardly. You obviously have knowledge, but you take no responsibility for your superior attitude nor your sneering tone. You troll this forum with the intention of displaying your knowledge SOLELY at the expense of others, and more importantly who are willing to express that knowledge publicly, KNOWING some jackhole like you will spend their day poking holes in what they said.
Be proud sir, be very proud.
for Rilgon… lvl 76 w/ Glyph of Aimed Shot, 5/5 Efficiency, here’s my current mana values:
Steady Shot 142
Aimed Shot 245
Arcane Shot 394
Chimera Shot 630
Serpent Sting 354
My rotation is similar to what you suggested… Chimera > Aimed > Steady…
I am planning on trying out Arcane after the patch and after I hit 80 both with and without the Arcane glyph. If it costs as much mana as Steady, I’d be crazy not to try and fit it in post patch right?
Be fair on Nassira, its a lot harder to take part in the podcast than it is to listen to it, you say something on the podcast you aren’t getting a chance to go back and edit it or anything, BRK just overcomes you with a wave of rapid-firing questions and your left to try and keep up and get vital information across.
You did a great job Nassira and I’m not saying that just because you have a sporebat.
Though that defiantly works in your favor
You didn’t mention that in your original post.
Unglyphed, Arcane is cheaper than Aimed. Hell, GLYPHED, Arcane is cheaper than Aimed (due to the mana return).
Oh I missed a Rilgon comment. I haven’t called anyone a mouthbreathing keyboard drooler for weeks.
“Intelligent and skilled players have an obligation to assist the less aware players around them in a kind, approachable manner.”
I partially disagree. The part is that personally I don’t think teaching level 80s who run 25-mans (upon which, once again, I always formulate my opinions on) how to trap, FD and MD should ever be done in a kind, approachable manner because this is learned while leveling.
If it’s advanced stuff, however, everyone’s more than welcome to argue. I promise I won’t call someone an idiot unless their argument is truly moronic.
“…have no idea why BRK hasn’t banned you from commenting yet.”
Me neither. I guess it’s that wall of text where he asked me to stop acting like a complete douchebag after which I stopped acting like a complete douchebag.
@ Other guy
“It seems you would be better served running a blog of your own, where you can freely point …”
I already do. I must dismiss most parts of your comment as erroneous.
“obviously ”
I love this word. It’s such a bulletproof word. Don’t you?
“…KNOWING some jackhole like you will spend their day poking holes in what they said. ”
I think it’s a great learning experience. Wouldn’t it be great if, while I was learning the class, someone would come and tell me what was I doing wrong so I could improve even further? That one never came so I had to do everything myself. You can too!
@ Torgall
Glyph of steady shot is a must. Even if you use every instant available, it’s still your most frequent shot. I think they fixed the Glyph of serpent sting/chimera shot bug so get that one too. Third major is IAotH.
@ TEJ
All of your drivel begs the question: which blog?
Regarding “obviously”, I see nothing that disputes the absolutism of it in this context.
@TEJ
And before you get all excited about “obviously”, I, unlike you, have no issue with giving credit where credit is due, regardless of the level of distaste involved.
Thank you so much Lienna. I’ve been very overwhelmed by all of this, especially the aftermath of bombardment.
If you disagree with me, power to you. But as BRK mentioned, there is no “cookie cutter must have” spec anymore. It’s flexible, and it’s yours to command. If you see issues in one area of your play, you can enhance or balance it with certain talents.
If you’re not astute enough to figure it out on your own, you can borrow someone else’s hard work, but don’t expect yourself to be able to come out on top with it if you didn’t create it yourself. Putting numbers into a spreadsheet will not make you a good hunter. What makes you a good hunter is flexibility, utility, speed, intelligence, and experience all wrapped together, and you should be able to use that experience to better yourself constantly, NOT to claim your own superiority.
For those of you who think me an idiot, I advise you to get interviewed on the spot and be able to give a detailed analysis of every talent point in your tree, and then tell me if you feel you were misrepresented or misunderstood. I did the best I could, Lienna did the best she could, and trust us…….we could’ve done much worse.
If you think MM hunters were horribly represented by me, then I urge you please to contact BRK and tell him you DEMAND a rebuttal interview! He’ll do it. I’m sure. And I’d love to listen. We can all learn from each other.
This will be my last comment on this thread. Thanks for the interest.
<3 Nass
@ Adamantite
My blog. The one where I write about whatever I feel. Actually I have a wonderful post about the complexity of GftT->DPS calculations coming up soon. Be patient. I will link it in due time.
I still expect a counterargument to the entire “learning experience” drivel. Or at least an opinion which I will respect.
@ “obviously” part
The sheer absolutism is the amusing part. I also always give credit where its due, even though it may seem otherwise. It was really funny. I mean it.
P.S: BRK, gogo interview with TEJ on Beast Mastery hunters. I won’t bite.
@either BRK or Nass, cant remember which one of u talked about viper sting, but next patch its a percent of mana, i dont know the PTR news or anything. but if its a boss fight that has mana and its, say a 65000 mana pool for the boss and viper drains 10% (maybe) that means is drains 6500 mana. chimera (kia-mare-a) shot will refund 60% of that, so u will get back about 4000 mana.
@TEJ
I just typed a bunch of stuffs but the spam filter ate it and I forgot to copy it first.
In short: I (almost) completely agree with you re: Rilgon.
Re: absolutist statements- agreed, this isn’t English class, nor do I require one, if it makes you happy to worry about that, have at it.
Re: Your blog- the name? How about an Armory link? If you’re concerned that people may make level 1’s to spam you, maybe that anonymity you say you don’t need is a bigger cloak than you will admit. I’m sure without said anonymity you’d be a bit nicer with your criticism.
Re: learning experience- I have, and agree everyone should, but that doesn’t give you an excuse to pop off like some know-it-all 13 year old with a superiority complex.
Lastly, if you have your own blog.. why are you commenting here? I know why Rilgon does it (he’s looking for more traffic), are your reasons similar?
If this Blog had Ignore commenter feature it would rock.
TEJ, your problem is how you say stuff. Quit trying to make folks look dumb and explain your thoughts without crapping on folks and you will actually have folks listening to you.
Your attitude prevents me from even reading your posts.
Interesting how the original feeling of the post has been lost amid the hate generated towards someone who has already admitted they’re an elitist jerk. Someone who is elitist is usually only elite in their own minds, you know…
BRK: will you be doing videos of the roles for hunters vs the latest end game bosses? I always enjoyed watching those.
is dat sum beck intro?
@ All, I think that TEJ has defintely calmed/toned down the level of his comments to a point where they are actually comments and not just plain rude.
He has APOLOGIZED, in writing, when he made a mistake.
I must agree with the point of ‘teaching’ level 80s. If you made it to 80 without learning the base mechanics of your class, well, go roll and Pally! /smile
As to why BRK hasnt banned TEJ, it has been said here before, he has never ever banned someone for commenting. After all, its a Free Country, isnt it?
Big Props to BRK for keeping it varied and interesting.
As per the original post – I cant play at work (although I have tried) cause our network has a throttle in place for outgoing connections…/sigh
There are two things I look forward to in a BRK podcast: Entertainment and perspective. All things BRK deliver on the first and this was no exception. I LOVED the intro song. Every time I hear Loser now I’m going to be hard pressed not to sing “I’m a Marksman baby…” It’s that kind of fun that makes me an unabashed fan of BRK.
BRK always gives a great perspective, be it from him directly or through one of his guests. I may not always agree. I may do things a differently. But I always walk away with at least food for thought — the knowledge that there is some other way to do things. Not right, not wrong. Not better, not worse. Just different.
Thank you for once again delivering on both, BRK — great entertainment with refreshing perspective.
TEJ made knowledgeable comments, I suspect he linked the wrong build as his comments contradict the build. But he is correct, don’t get Barrage without Aimed, don’t get Silencing Shot for PVE, Effiency is FTL, Surv Instincts > 4pts (2 extra points) in Unleashed Fury. I don’t agree with the Hunter’s Mark part, but I expect raid leaders will choose that depending on how many hunters are in the raid.
And everyone who flamed him for flaming others, isn’t that hypocritical? There is a lot of bad info online and misinformation. I can understand why people get edgy when they see it. TEJ what is your blogsite? Does Elitistjerks.com care you bite off their handle?
Nassira, I’m gonna listen to your podcast as soon as I get home tonight… here’s to hoping your voice is as cute as you are.
BRK, this would have made an awesome enhanced podcast. Take some screenies of the talent trees as you do the build and then use Garageband to add the pics to the podcast track and just slide the pics around to coincide with the audio you recorded. Then people could have seen the build as you were discussing it. I’ll admit I don’t have the Marks tree memorized. I’m not sure I even know what is on the same level as GftT except Rapid Killing. We do lots of projects like I’m describing at work. I also think Garageband would let you export audio only to provide a low tech version.
@ Perzyx
It’s not prepared yet, and I ALWAYS cite the other elitist jerks when I use their tools or knowledge.
Hello,
My name is Larry; this is my first character of my own, I’ve been playin for about 6 months on my cousins Druid (Arruin 80- burning blade) He is a lvl 20 blood elf hunter. I’ve been listening to the podcast and hearing about the AOE tanking and I think you’ve convinced me to try that and I would also like to try the MM spec or possibly 51/20/0. In your proffesional opinion how would I go about speccing. If you would please send me the hunter talent spec accordingly to Kojacks93@yahoo.com
Thanks for clearing that up, Nassirra
TEJ, check out my new blog http://crookedbow.blogspot.com. I guess I had to join the blog bandwagon sooner or later. Let me know your’s when you are ready and I’ll add it to the blogroll.
