multi shot is bad. it has a .5 second cast and a 1.5 second gcd making it a 2 second shot. you’re better off using an aimed shot (if you have it), waiting .5 seconds, or using steady shot inbetween explosive shots.
At first I thought this said “BRK Tap Dancing Movie”.
WTB!
multi shot doesn’t work like that anonymous, the 0.5 second is during the GCD, so its 0.5 second cast, then 1 second gcd. Think of steady shot, if it triggered the GCD when you finished that would be a 3.5 second cast (unhasted) 2 second steady shot then 1.5 second gcd!
I also want the tap-dancing movie ^^
Taking Aimed Shot requires losing a point somewhere else, and many people are not down with that.
But is Multi the optimum Explosive Shot/LnL “pause” shot? Maybe, maybe not. Lots to experiment with, that’s for certain.
First might I say beautifully done and nice video for beginners to Survival. And no offense to you BRK you do great work. But as I’ve raided Surv. since about a week into BC (when i hit 70) I thought I’d toss in a few experienced pointers.
First and foremost is your dancing pattern. Unfortunately although for people new to surv this is a great technique to be in range to do this, in raid time it’s not the most beneficial. Typically because of Sniper Training it’s more beneficial for you to use your Disengage after setting the trap. It cuts back on run time, you can shoot your first ex shot while in the air, and after that a few steps back will put you in range for that 6% dmg increase.
I do very much agree with multi-shot though ^_^. Lots of surv hunters feel the need to take up aimed shot but unfortunately you do in fact lose a point somewhere else and you really get more dmg when all three arrows crit.
Really other than the dancing it was magnificent. Personally I would take the one point out of hunting party and put it into Trap mastery for the 30% dmg increase. Also a matter of personal preference is the glyph of immo trap, with those two combined things your immo trap get high up on the meter and you end up getting a significant dmg boost. (if you gotta set your trap anyhow take advantage of the dmg)
Just thought the pointers might help for newcomers to the survival tree. Hope it helps ^_^.
P.S. I dig your work BRK we should chat hunter stuff sometime. And keep Hobbes hunters everywhere need to stay faithful to those faithful to them. You are a shining example of that.
Absolutely, we came to that conclusion as well. We want to get the rotation down-pat first, then expand upon it.
Wow this looks like a lot fun, Ive been leveling my roach in preparation to tanking, but this looks like so much fun I’m not sure if I’ll resist raiding with my hunter!
If you ever decide you want to talk typical/raiding surv rotations or anything survival for that matter lol hit me up on Aggramar I’m the only Kallanthros in town
. I’d be more than happy to help.
Hey BRK! Nice video! I was trying the same yesterday, in the same dummy
But I have a question for you, what’s the name of the addon you use to have those huge buttons?
I’ve been playing with Survival for a few weeks now, and quite like it. A couple things I’ve found helpful are to macro the trap and disengage.
/castsequence reset=4 Immolation Trap, Disengage
Bind that to a key, and it’s a quick double tap when in range to drop the trap. If you only need the trap (say, while running through Thaddeus’ legs on a polarity shift), just tap once.
Also, there’s an addon called ShotProc, that gives you an audible alert when Lock and Load Procs, which I’ve found to be quite useful. By default, it sounds like a shotgun being pumped, but you can use replace that with whatever sound you like
@mascia:
He uses bartender (4, I believe), and buttonfacade. Bartender should be all you need though, it’s pretty simple to configure, but at the same time you can change it in an innumerable amount of ways.
After watching this vid, I’m less struck by the damage done as by the
ridiculous mechanics. It could be comical, if it wasn’t just plain stupid (and tragic in this hunter’s eyes). This doesn’t look “natural”, not “surviving”, not
ranger-like, or however one wants to describe the hunter role.
Running in and out of melee to drop a “trap”?
“Exploit” seems too strong a word, but stacking points in the talent
trees just to get one or two talents that result in bizarro-looking toon
antics to crank some extra damage? This is just like the odd BM builds
aimed at “exploiting” Readiness.
I’ve never been much of a purist, but damn I wish they’d stop dicking around with the hunter class.
BRK,
If you stand just outside of melee range, you can drop your trap in melee range…eliminating the need to run back or disengage from the boss, allowing you to get off one or two more shots than you are now.
(On some bosses this isn’t a good idea, but…on those who are pretty much tanked standing still…go for it.)

Trap Dancing is the top SV spec as far as i’m aware as it provides the maximum procs physically possible of LnL, taking advantage of Explosive Shot. It requires standing fairly close, so talents such as Hawk Eye and Sniper Training aren’t required. To make up for it you can get the trap talents and save a few for improved stings, although dont reduce the trap CD as LnL has an internal 30sec CD.
Disengage is a brilliant way to back off, however, it costs mana (not much but it builds up) and the level of terrain may affect distance propelled. This trick would be down to personal preference.
The other SV type is Sniper Training. With this build you sacrifice the trap talents and possibly improved stings (you dont sting less, u might just want to put these talents elsewhere) for Hawk Eye and Sniper Training. This build is about staying far away from the target to increase your damage of steady and explosive by a fair deal. This is good because you can keep safe, and can retreat to bandage easily, depending on the encounter. However, without testing I would guess it isn’t as strong as you are relying exclusively on Serpent Sting for your LnL procs.
If you make a macro like:
/cast Immolation Trap
/cast Raptor Strike
You will Raptor Strike the mob as you lay your trap, adding DPS. (I also took 1 in Hawk Eye + 2 in Savage Strikes to augment this effect.)
Also, you should strafe away from the dummy. Backpedaling is bad, BRK.
Am I the only person who noticed that the PPM rate is the same with or without trap dancing? I’d rather take the range advantage over the element of control, because frankly it isn’t worth the effort.
The only remotely challenging part about LnL procs is filling a correct shot while the second tick of ExS hits.
Am I the only one that noticed two misses on Explosive in that Recount report?
The point of the video wasn’t to display how awesome BRK was, Rilgon, just to show how trap dancing works.
I still like my surv at range build. I was averaging 4k+ DPS in naxx 25 last night and thats not bad at all.
There’s no excuse to not being hitcapped on a level 83 target.
Trapdancing with Disengage sure reminds me of the Order of the Leaping Luna ……..lol….but if it works it works. (strafe, if possible, does sound better though)
Awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this for us, BRK
It’s great to see what SV should look like in action, I would have had to fumble around the target dummies for hours to work this out!
As many have said before me, it seems like trap dancing is a good way to reach around your… um, rear end… to scratch your elbow. You’re gaining DPS with Immolation, but you’re losing the ranged advantage that you spent six points in getting. Perhaps there’s a different build between the two that I’m missing? Maybe leave out sniper training and take something else?
Oh well. Anyway, I’m a casual raider, and I’m sticking with BM. Do what you have fun with, and trap dancing is not fun. Watching my devilsaur post more DPS than a warlock (at least, before the patch) was fun.
the optimum Explosive Shot/LnL “pause” shot
Wait what? Did i miss something in the recent Survivalist podcast?
What is this ‘pause’ shot, why are we using Multi-Shot??
I love the Scrolling Combat Text add on you have. Could you let me know what it is. IT seems like the classic SCT but with a cool skin.
Thanks
I tried SV a while back… and I loved it…
… catch is, I like my spirit beast more…
I don’t find BM fun… I just like my spirit beast too much…
Also, typing >.> messes with the comments.
@ storm
The pause shots are between explosive shots when you get lock and load. Explosive shot takes 2 seconds to tick fully, so if you fire 3 explosive shots in a row then they overlap and you miss 2 ticks, which is something like 4-6k+ damage.
Instead doing something like explosive-multi-explosive-steady-explosive will mean that you get all the ticks. On the other hand it means that there’s an extra 3 second before your explosive shot is ready again.
Probably the best way now is to literally wait that extra 1/2 a second, that way you get explosive shot ready for casting again as soon as possible and get all the ticks. Over 3 lock and loads that way you’d get one extra explosive shot, which is more damage than the 3 filler shots you would have lost out on…
Personaly I use a freezing arrow for on trash and sting on bosses.
What addons are you using in this video?
So what changes did you make to SCT because it look really nice.

to whomever discovered trap dancing; and to all those trying to propogate the knoweldge…
but I doubt it will stand in the next patch. Just my opinion.
Somehow brings to mind when I was leveling my one toon, a hunter ,to 70. To save me from the time it took to get groups together, I bought up a slew of very cheap “+Healing” gear at the AH. Lowered my damage but gave a huge boost to Mend Pet. Enabled lengthy solo kills of elites.
Apparently a bunch of hunters started not just doing it but talking about it….next patch +healing gear no longer enhanced Mend Pet.
Of course the rules will always be shifting. Here’s to hunters stacking personal qualities of “agility” to keep adapting…
Noticed. I find that most of the time, my trap doesn’t proc LnL because the internal cooldown is still ticking from a Serpent Sting proc.
I’m going with a Sniper Training style. Trapdancing might give a slight increase on target dummies, but on boss fights the extra movement just costs too much now that there’s an ICD on LnL.
Nice video, BRK – informative as always, and it certainly illustrates the concept very clearly. I will desist from relishing the death sound of dwarves for a day in honour of your effort.
Personally though, I prefer the Sniper Training option – it’s probably me, and this may improve with practice in the art of trap dancing, but I consistently see a difference of about 600-1000 dps on the training dummies in Orgrimmar between the two styles, and that difference is not in favour of the trap dancer when said trap dancer is I.
What is important for the Survivalist sniper though is finding a shot rotation that works well for them, and being able to break out of that rotation into another one efficiently when Lock and Load procs and then resume the previous rotation. Mine seems to work pretty darn well, clocking Recount to levels I was unable to achieve as BM before the nerf.
Lock and Load procs often enough for me when Serpent Sting is up that I feel no need to run around like a monkey in amongst the melees to place traps. Still, it does look like a fun technique, and it can be rather addictive when practising it on a training dummy.
As for a BRK tap dancing video, GIEF NAO!
@The Elitist Jerk and Nick S
I think you are incorrect regarding the average proc rate on serpent sting vs trap dancing.
I assume your reasoning is that that proc rate is now 10% per tick and therefore 30 seconds = 10 ticks = 1 LnL proc every 10 seconds?
But this is actually only the best case scenario: at most serpent sting can result in 1 proc every 10 seconds. If my quick calc is correct, the expected procs per 30 seconds just with serpent sting is 0.69. Adding the ticks from explosive shot brings this up to 0.89. I did these numbers very quickly though so I hope I haven’t made a slip. Sorry, for not showing full workings but was concerned that I would bore BRK’s good readers to tears… Let me know if you’d like more detail.
So, you’re losing about 0.1 LnL procs every 30 seconds by not trap dancing.
Without going through the numbers further, 0.1 procs doesn’t seem to make the additional risk from getting close or the time taken to move away from the mob all that appealing.
