It’s Spring; New Hat Time
The socket bonus just stinks. There was no blue gem that we liked enough to try for that silly socket bonus than we do our lovely Big-Agility red gem, so we eschewed color-coordination and went with what we love best.
This was attained in 25-man Sartharion with one drake up. Got him on the second try. WWS is a disaster as we died on the first fire-wave, even with 22k health. Might as well be wearing cloth. Combat-rez FTW, we came back and helped.
WTB gnomish fire extinguisher.

Better than Tier 7, in my opinion (I have it and I’m a survival hunter).
I also have that…. I feel special now. Also, from personal experience it drops without any drakes up.
We’re bonded now….. BONDED BRK
Our guild leader opened up this hat for the Shammy to roll, after I had beaten the other two hunters! and he won…
It says “Sniper” for the ever lovin’ Pete!
(of course it is a nice helm for a shammy) /cry
What a nice raidleader to save the Shaman his keyboard typing that way “ok Hunters roll… good now the winner gets to roll against the Shaman.” All should roll against each other.
Anyway, got it myself and it is the onle piece I am actually proud of.
Nice upgrade. What are you using to gauge your gear upgrades? Are you using a hunter spread sheet from the elitist jerks forums or something else?
We’ve run it a few times and I haven’t been lucky on the drops.
We actually 20 manned it last night. LOL.
Some of our raiders weren’t on so we decided to do try it.
Content is really a joke this time around.
Hopefully Ulduar will be better.
Ratingbuster is an awesome add-on. That helm is the second-best in slot for a hunter imo, after the Blue Aspect Helm from 25 man Malygos.
Anyone know if brk will attend to the wow insider show on saturday?
“Nice upgrade. What are you using to gauge your gear upgrades? Are you using a hunter spread sheet from the elitist jerks forums or something else?”
It’s called a Brain. You may not have one, but some people do.
Same Item dropped last night for our raid. However the MM hunter got it over me, but had to use ALL her DKP to do it, so she won’t be getting any drops next week at all in Naxx. We one night clear 25 naxx and OS so will have to wait for next week. At least a shammy didn’t get it. I use common sense for my add on to gauge gear upgrades, but I refer all our new raiders to ratingbuster and Maxdps.com until they learn their gear a little better.
SPRING? That does it…I’m moving back to florida.
Maybe for BM or Survival, but as MM, I see a 2.7 DPS downgrade taking it over my Engineering goggles, and 15 DPS down from the 10-man T7 helm.
But yes, Blue Aspect Helm is far and away best in slot.
That’s a really, really bad idea. The fact that they still don’t have a MM or SV Hunter engine and value Armor Penetration so FREAKING much makes them a joke.
Best to use the spreadsheet, RatingBuster, and good, old-fashioned common sense.
I won this helm in our Sarth 25 last week, and it roxxors! BM all the way here, so I chucked a Big Red AP gem in the slot and away I went. Grats BRK.
@Rilgon
I didn’t know that ArPen was not factored. However, I said raiders not hunters, so I will still send them there as a starting point for where gear upgrades are for them. Most are fairly new 80’s or respecs that are still in quest blues or beginner Heroics so it lays out some gear choices for them for where to run instances. Thanks for the heads up on the ArPen ratings. I will caveat what I tell them now.
and totally misread what you posted about Arpen. Its too early and no coffee…
I dunno, I find it better to help them draw out their own gear plan than just pointing them at a website with so many flaws (like MaxDPS). AFAIK, there’s spreadsheets for every class out there if you know where to look, so helping make those more accessible is, IMO, more virtuous than just saying “lol maxdps.com k”. It teaches them how to see how the math works, as well as giving them a far more reputable tool.
And besides, any website proclaiming to help you get “max DPS” that doesn’t have an engine for the spec of the hour is rather silly, don’t you think?
I love this helm. Got it about a month ago during a OS25 PUG when I lucked out on the /roll. It’s pretty much the last helm I’ll need for a while, since we’re not likely to see Heroic Eye of Eternity for a while. Congrats, BRK!
Too bad the helm looks like a gimp mask, though. I roll with the graphic off.
Damn error msg. Long story short…agree your last, iirc they have resto shammy and prot pally but no MM or SV. Odd indeed.
Nice seeing Hobbes instead of that silly Spirit Beast.
He may not be the kitty of doom anymore, but he’s still a better looking animal.
The problem with any gear rating system, whether it’s maxdps.com (/cringe), rawr, or HunterDPS.xls from EJ, is that all any piece of gear must be evaluated in the context of what you have in the bank, what you’re wearing at the time, and effect changes might have on your stats and DPS overall. By way of example, I have my T7.5 and Helm of the Grave, and have seen Sniper drop twice. (Maly drops only pally plate, far as I can tell.) Looking at my stats and spec right now, Blue Aspect is BiS, followed by Grave incrementally over T7.5, and then Sniper.
The problem with that is it discounts the hit on Sniper because I have hitcap from other gear. But, if I drop a hit-rating 1H and equip sinister revenge, then the hit on this helm pushes it up to #2, behind Blue Aspect.
What’s my point? Talking about BiS items and item A> item B for X spec is being conducted done in a vacuum, and in many cases presumes that you have gear or will get a drop that you haven’t even seen yet. I don’t mean to denigate the idea that something MIGHT be better for one spec vs. the other, but I’m always very cautious when somebody says, for example, that Journey’s End is BiS for hunters.
HunterDPS.xls and Rawr are great utilities, and I would encourage anyone to get them and use them, even if you’re not raiding or running Heroic 25s. But none of those are a substitute for the good ole’ hunk o’ flesh rattling around in that great big grapefruit you have.
I’d just like to second that maxdps is a TERRIBLE site to judge your upgrades off of. It was alright in TBC, but at the WotLK jump it went to hell. It’s nice in that you can see all the gear available to you, but its ranking system leaves a lot to be desired.
Heh, I picked that up this week too with a roll of 17- I guess I’m glad you turned down my invitation to come do 25 man with my guild
If you and the other mail wearers have nice helms (or anyother pieces), then might as well pick up some of the BiS items so you can start itemizing. EJ’s has a nice Thread going about how to achieve the maximum DPS as BM, MM, SV. It includes everything from spec, pet, gear, gemming, enchanting, to the profs you should take. Now that is just if you want to maximise everything. Like I said if its BiS, but not at the moment then it wouldn’t hurt to pick it up anyways if the other mail wearers have something too.
Rilgon, I assume you are Hitcapped now, that alone makes the Engy goggles better.
However, if you were to get the Hit from the helmet and exchange some other Hit piece for one with crit or AP, you might very well see an upgrade.
The two headpieces aren’t the same and aren’t applicable for every situation of course. For BRK this was one awesome headpiece because he was lacking Hit and Haste is a fairly nice stat for Surv, plus as Surv he gets a good deal more Agi out of it.
I’ve got that same helm. Still kept my engineering googles though for seeing gas clouds. I think that’s gotta be overall the best hunter helm at the moment. Now I just need someone who can make me the same Meta you have in that.
Dying by the Lava Wave can be very annoying – grats on your new helm!
I recommend that do the following in that fight
1) Increase your Max Camera distance to 50
/script SetCVar(”cameraDistanceMax”, 50)
/script SetCVar(”cameraDistanceMaxFactor”, 2)
2.) Turn down your Spell Detail to LOW – ThIs will make it trival to see the shadow fissures on the ground. DK & Pally Consecration will not cover up these zones.
3) To help keep hobbes alive!
Turn off Dash from auto-casting for the duration of the encounter.
Create a macro:
/petpassive
/petfollow
/cast Dash
When the lava wall is coming click on this! and little hobbes will run back to your side! After it passes send him back in
Best of luck to you BRK now go get 3 Drakes!
Congratulations BRK!
What a sexy hat!
On other thought – outside of the T7 helm, aesthetically all the mail helms are just FUGLY! Metal ball, cut in half, two eyeholes poked in it, and squished ontop of your head . I have to Hide Helm to deal with the retchedness.
Good helm until you get the t7.5.
You forgot to mention it makes you look like batman.
This is deeply troubling.
I have one too. BTW.
@vcproj
So I take it you guys have done Sarth with 3 drakes up? otherwise your comment about the content being “a joke” is just another ignorant comment.
BRK, have you considered an Enchanted Tear for a blue slot where you do want to get the socket bonus? It’s all you need to activate your meta, and it will give you 6 AGI, 6 INT, and 6 STAM; paired with a Delicate ruby, it’s probably probably better than a 8 AGI/12stam and 8 agi/8crit gem. (22 agi, 6 int, 6 stam vs. 16 agi, 8 crit, 12 stam)
“On other thought – outside of the T7 helm, aesthetically all the mail helms are just FUGLY!”
Oh, I must disagree; Arc-Scorched Helmet is the reason I finally turned off “Hide Helm” after two years (with brief exceptions for Stylin’ Crimson Hat). Of course, this may be because the “bowling-ball cut in half” look is one of the few styles that actually works on a female Tauren.
Plus, as Zuldim mentioned, you look like the Dark Knight. My favorite new pre-instance song now is, “Na na na na na na na na…BAT-COW!”
taht helm is bitching my friend…bitchin
batman helm for the win!
As a SV hunter myself, I am quite upset to see other SV hunters running raids with cats or any other dps pet that only stacks a little to their dps and their dps alone.
We run 10 man nax with two SV hunters and I bring the wasp while the other brings the wolf. 1K+ armor reduction with 150+ Attack power increase for the raid.
Wasp + Wolf = Win.
To make things worse, if you put any points in Focus Aim to lower your hit cap then you are gimping your pet even worse because Focus Aim does not apply to pet so now its missing. Sorry BRK but Hobbs must go.
On a separate note. Got the helm, love it, dropped will all drakes down. So you don’t need to leave any up for it to drop. I love looking like the batman. It sets fear into my enemies and all those lowbies I like to camp. haha
The only time that a wolf is useful is if you have no other +AP buffs (i.e. Battle Shout and/or Blessing of Might). You really don’t have those available?
Sigh. This dropped for me just days ago in OS, sadly it was a PUG, and there was 6 hunters. Of course, the huntard that got hit with lava 5 times won the roll over the one who got hit zero.
Don’t mind my qq.
Tequilafly-
Unless you’re running with no warriors, both the wolf and the wasp lose utility as soon as they Sunder or Battle Shout. For raids, us hunters are stuck with pure-DPS pets, unless the balance is way whacked.
@Kaleanon
@Rilgon Arcsinh
So you guys are telling me that Wolf and wasp do not stack with Sunder, Battle shoute, or Blessing of Might? Basically if I have Blessing of Might on and the wolf does his howl, this does not increase my attack power even more?
By the way, we only have 1 pally and he usually puts Kings on us which is way better than Blessing of Might for SV.
@tequilafly that is correct. Additionally, Spore Cloud does not stack with Feral Faerie Fire. None of the pet ability buffs/debuffs stack with player provided buffs/debuffs that I know of.
Though, as far as I know, a Wasp will continue to use Sting even if Faerie Fire is present – you just won’t get another thousand or so armor lopped off.
She’ll still bring all her DPS, though.
Sting will work with Sunder. It does not work with Faerie Fire.
Furious Howl not work with Blessing of Might or Battle Shout.
Spore Cloud, I’m not sure about, but sounds like it wouldn’t do the armor debuff if Faerie Fire or Sting were present.
pop deterrence and take the firewall face on >.>
A Perfect Shifting Shadow Crystal (7 AGI, 11 STAM) is a purple gem that’s the BEST blue gem I know of for SV hunters that need to fill a blue gem. However, for that socket bonus, I think 16 AGI is definitely worth losing the socket bonus.
Sting indeed does stack with Sunder Armor. And if you really don’t have ANY paladins/warriors, you are in trouble.
On a side note, my bumblebee is bringing a nice 515 DPS in Naxx10 =) I think they’re definitely worth the “ZOMGWTF ITS TOO BIG QQ”. And I think I’m the only hunter on my server who kept the Hive Queen after 3.0.8 =)
New hat time already? Wow, where does the time go?
I must make haste to a respectable milliner!
@vKinzlayer
“So I take it you guys have done Sarth with 3 drakes up? otherwise your comment about the content being “a joke” is just another ignorant comment.”
I’m sorry.
Allow me to retort.
It is a joke.
Actually we haven’t done the hardest encounter as of yet. 3 drake Sarth on normal.
Hell we 18 manned 2 drakes.
We have hit a rut as some of our core raiders have IRL issues that need to be taken care of.
So after you remove that foot from your mouth you can stick it… Well you know where you can stick it.
ps – armory is great isn’t it…
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Darkspear&n=Valandu
Check us out on wowjutsu – haven’t checked lately but we were the number one guild on our server for a while.
25 man Naxx clears in one night…
Well BRK, that why I dropped skinning from my main a long time ago. Moved it off to an alt and now I’m LW and JC. Delicate Dragon’s Eye ftw! I pop 3 of these into any of my difficult to fill sockets.
On a side note: it’s kind of funny how everybody in the guild is pretty much negative on points. The gear almost always is going to the bidder with the least negative points!
OK, I’ve got two tenacity and two ferocity pets. With the last slot I want to get either a wasp or the spore bat. I’m leaning toward the spore bat, only so I can try out a cunning pet. I like the wasps a lot. I missed out on the hive queen (wasn’t high enough level until post patch) so if I go wasp it will be one of the sapphire hive wasps (blue is more my color than orange anyway). I don’t know… decisions, decisions!
@Torgall,
I have the hive queen. Did the patch make her untameable?
@Bighappy
Yes, she is now untameable.
and yes, I have her in my stable.
I have a request.
Edit by BRK:
No, we have a request.
No more F-bombs on this blog.
No more belittling people on this blog.
No more general @sshattery on this blog.
You have your own place to be TEJ, so keep that stuff there, please.
For the blue gem, there is a great +27 agi or +27 crit dragons eye design (prismatic). Both cuts make the gem BoP, so only JCs can use them in their gear, but if you are a JC hunter, get to the jewel trainer in Dalaran, and get the designs.
