shutdown

We’ve checked our traffic, nothing is amiss. But we’ve made backups of everything in case HostMonster decides to shut us down permanently.

We get around 600,000 visitors a month, and can chew through 3TB of downloads at the same time. Perhaps a new host, someone who understands our needs and won’t threaten us with being shut-down while not offering assistance before they do it, is in order?

I was scared trying to load up your site and it says you were cancelled.. =(

  2. Mascia on February 2nd, 2009 3:50 pm

No host is enough for BRK and his community, maybe you should create your own host?
    :P

  3. Fahr & Bacon on February 2nd, 2009 3:53 pm

Yeah, that’s pretty crazy. I hope this gets straightened out.

  4. Shartz on February 2nd, 2009 3:54 pm

If they don’t want to offer you any suggestions to prevent this repeat problem, you’re better off looking for a new host.

Hostmonster provides “unlimited bandwidth and space”, but they can only provide that because they don’t host big sites. Imagine if Hostmonster were to host facebook for example, they would have to ditch their old policy.

Perhaps you are outgrowing them, and should look for something more serious? (Hostmonster is an unprofessional host for hobbyists from where i see it.)

  7. Dalaila on February 2nd, 2009 4:01 pm

Look for famous and consolidated names. Register.com should be one of them for example.

  8. Leejin on February 2nd, 2009 4:07 pm

I say MORE GNAKED GNOMES RACES. Bring their servers to a grinding stop like you did wow’s.

They have no idea of the power that is the BRK influence.

GoDaddy.com – I just moved my own customers over there and shut down my hosting services.

  10. Lei on February 2nd, 2009 4:20 pm

Lei’s perspective of the Great BRK assasination attempt of 2009,
    GBAAO2009 for short.

“Lei trys to load up bigredkitty.net , hoping for news on anything hunterish, maybe a new BRK podcast?”
*Lei sees “ACCOUNT SUSPENDED” and gasps, followed by running around the room screaming “WHO’S GONNA TAKE CARE OF HOBBES?!?!!”, there may have even been mentionings of the sky falling. (Not exaggerated, honest)*.

Lei then runs around all of Azeroth using only Aspect of the Cheetah, telling all of its five remaining questers that BRK has been shut down for being too awesome for his own good!

After all this, Lei refreshes bigredkitty.net, to see that BRK has survived.

    It’s lonely at the top.

A victim of your own success.

    More money, more problems.

    Stop trying to download shirts?

  13. Brigwyn on February 2nd, 2009 4:32 pm

BRK – it might be time to diversify :P or at the least check out other host providers. I’ve had pretty good luck with BlueHost, they claim similar “Unlimited” traffic and hosting features.

Anyways, let us out in the Nether know what we can do to help.

Oh.. and glad your back online for now. :)

  14. Nassira on February 2nd, 2009 4:34 pm

Holy crap. Sorry, buddy. That sounds really sucky. I hope you can get it worked out. Nothing worse than thinking all your hard work is lost.

  15. Joe on February 2nd, 2009 4:42 pm

Please, for the love of all things holy, don’t support GoDaddy’s ridiculous TV advertising campaigns by giving them money.

  16. Danimalx23 on February 2nd, 2009 4:49 pm

    It’s all the Pornz. I know, I’m a DOctor.

  17. Bluehunt on February 2nd, 2009 4:52 pm

It outrageous that they do not recognize the opportunity to work with you to grow your business. unless someone quickly apologies and blame this on some automated bit of bs, I would find another service provider.

  18. Brigwyn on February 2nd, 2009 5:16 pm

If it’s site related, or traffic related there are many different options to help with this.

Sometimes an arrangement of just providing an advert stating (hosting provided by HostMonster) can go a long ways :)

  19. Fnarth on February 2nd, 2009 5:21 pm

You should looking Media Template as a host. They are by far the most trusted, reliable, and helpful hosting company in the industry (I work in the web design and dev. industry). And no, I don’t work for them. Just appreciate their services.

  20. kunukia on February 2nd, 2009 5:22 pm

    I wuz scared…

  21. Randoric on February 2nd, 2009 5:32 pm

If need be, i will address this issue myself. Whichever fool tries to shut down BRK is asking for massive kill shots. Woe to he!! WOE TO HE I SAY!!!

  22. Some Guy on February 2nd, 2009 5:43 pm

    Try:

    http://www.mediatemple.net
    http://www.lunarpages.com/

It may be time for a dedicated box. Your box, your control.

  23. Trinsian on February 2nd, 2009 5:45 pm

Do you mean Media Temple, Fnarth?

In any case, personally I’ve had good experiences with BlueHost.com for hosting small business websites.

  24. Boomsville & Kablamo on February 2nd, 2009 5:45 pm

    Dreamhost.com

    Easy-peasy

  25. Fryarätt on February 2nd, 2009 5:59 pm

Bluehost has been excellent for the past 3 years for myself and the clients I’ve got hosted there.
I’m with Joe above… GoDaddy is marginal even before you see their lame-azz commercials.

  26. Phaelia on February 2nd, 2009 6:02 pm

Whatever you do, don’t go with Dreamhost. I used them for 3 months, 2.5 of which were the worst hosting I’ve ever experienced (extreme slowdowns, site completely unavailable). The service was bad enough that they agreed to refund all of my hosting costs when I left. I was initially very happy with your recommendation of Hostmonster, but hearing this is very worrisome.

  27. Brigwyn on February 2nd, 2009 6:12 pm

Ah.. had one mroe idea. after getting scared with this problem I went to my provider. They have an affiliate program. I joined up.. not the best solution, but gives me a bit mroe leverage when I do have issues. :)

  28. Zanpher on February 2nd, 2009 7:07 pm

Lets face it, hostmonster is not a honest host, a quick google and various forums provide that.

Head over to webhostingtalk.com, do a search and pick a few :) There are far better providers out there then this … place.

  29. Galorfinor on February 2nd, 2009 7:11 pm

Time to get your own webserver, lol I thought it was my work’s firewall playing a joke

    Gratz you’re back on line

  30. Fnarth on February 2nd, 2009 7:16 pm

@Trinsian. Yeah, I meant Media Temple, not Template…ah Mondays.

  31. blank on February 2nd, 2009 8:31 pm

NO THIS IS TERRIBLE, i think i have already found one of your backupsites though, out of force of habbit every now and then i type .com instead of .net for this site, it usually sais it could not find page bla bla bla bla bla all that crap, today i messed up and typed .com, i did not get the usual yada instead i got a site, a blank white page, but it was a website !!!…… was this of your doing?

  32. tilder on February 2nd, 2009 9:35 pm

If bandwidth and storage is a concern, why not look at offloading some of the static content (like images, css) to Amazon S3 or something? There’s plenty of documentation on how to do that, and in many cases, can be cheaper than a more comprehensive (and more supportive) host.

I’m with hostmonster, and occasionally bump into excessive CPU usage. For me, that boils down to caching and other tricks to improve page generation time.

  33. JamesT on February 2nd, 2009 11:17 pm

Disabling a site and contacting the owner is one thing, but the e-mail they sent you is just not right, I’d seek a better and more professional host.

I’m glad your site is backup, I was worried.

  34. Zahngril on February 3rd, 2009 12:36 pm

Time to check other hosts BRK…for 6 years I ran a fairly popular hobbist website. Many hosts promise ‘unlimited’ this and that expecting mom & pops and small businesses, etc that will only use a fraction of the actual webspace they allocate to each account. They then oversell their servers, figuring the average user takes up x space and bandwidth leaving y-x unused. As accounts grow, they simply mirror them to another server to accomdate. Eventually any decent site will out grow the capabilities of an “unlimited” host.

The sad fact of the matter is you have to pay for space and SERVICE. HM obviously has plenty of space but lacks service and one day you’ll wake up to a cancelled account (my site went through this with iPowerweb). Media Temple is a good one, Pair Networks is another I have worked with and enjoyed. Long story short, for the numbers you suggested it’ll cost ya a few more bucks a month to get reliable service but in the end you’ll have fewer headaches.

Offloading like Tilder mentioned is also a great option. It allows you to pay less overall and still provide everything you do. Any respectable hosting company will have a tech & sales department that is willing to spend some time figuring out the best solution for you before you sign up.

  35. Bucktron on February 3rd, 2009 2:56 pm

Hostmonster is just a subsidiary of bluehost. Blue host is the largest and fastest growing hosting company in the world.
