Red Text! It Burns!
“Dear BRK, I have a question for you about the attached screenshot. As you can see it shows my ranged damage in red……why? I would greatly appreciate any insight you could send my way. Ombre”
Well Ombre, in that UI, whatcha got there is a great big, steaming, festering pile of…
“Be nice, BRK.”
Brain?
“If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
Yeah, but…
“No, BRK.”
But but…
“Denied.”
But there’s an action-bar icon or two that we can’t even identify!
“You talkin’ bout the one just above his ram and to the left of Aspect of the Beast?”
Looks like Christmas ornaments and mistletoe.
“He did not ask you to critique his UI, he asked about the red text in his character panel, so stick to that.”
He needs to know that he doesn’t need Aspect of the Hawk on his action-bar if he has Aspect of the Dragonhawk available!
“Denied again. Shut yer trap and answer the man’s question.”
What IS that thing to the right of the cheese, Brain?!
“You know what? You’re fired.”
Fired?! You can’t fire us!
“Fired. Now then, as to the question. Ombre, you have activated Aspect of the Viper. Let’s take a close look at the tooltip for that spell, shall we?”
“See that part about ‘reducing your total damage done by 50%’? Well that’s what your character panel shows when AotV is active; the game colors your Damage text red to show that that statistic is being severely affected and is not the standard quantity. If you get resurrection sickness, all your stats will be colored red. Same thing.
“Ombre, we hope you received a satisfactory answer and haven’t been put off by BRK’s outrageous behavior today. We’ll let him out of the basement tomorrow in time for his Shuttle launch.”
He has a tail ring, Brain! A Tail Ring! How is that even possible!?
“Or not. Hope those astronauts have saved money with Geico.”

hey, you should remove his character name
if you’re going to make fun of him, at least give him some privacy
Do you mean you don’t know the icon for the ROFLCOPTER? Engineering FTW!
The button you can’t identify is the Roflcopter MkI, distinguishable from the Roflcopter MkII by its’ slow speed and lack of Hula Girl on the dashboard.
I’ll make no comments on the UI as mine is far, far worse.
Eeek, that second link is supposed to be this.
Quote from BRK’s Brain: “You talkin’ bout the one just above his ram and to the left of Aspect of the Beast?”
That icon is for the Engineer’s personal flying mount, the Flying Machine. (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34060)
Here’s hoping BRK gets better soon. Although, just between you and me, I look forward to the change of pace that Brain will probably bring if it takes this blog over, even for a short time.
Oh and the one next to the cheese is Gift of the Naaru
Oh for the love of all things holy please tell me you haven’t been in Viper for all of Wrath…
I was once in Viper for all of VoA-10.
#2 on DPS, too.
Eeek, 40 hit rating? That’s just over +1.2% hit%. Even if he were running the right Aspect, he couldn’t hit the broad side of a Pit Lord (assuming that Pit Lord were a couple levels above him, and not level 70…).
As a lesser class (Warrior), we get used to the red text since it pops up everytime we’re in defensive stance…since some people still don’t know why it does that, even at level 80 when they’ve had defensive stance for *70* levels, I’m willing to cut him slack.
I have no clue to whether this is an alt character or not. But, when you quest you get some blue/green upgrade gear. I see lvl 70 pvp gear all over the place and i wonder, how can someone manage to do 10 lvls without suffering low dps!
TBH I wouldn’t be shocked our fellow hunter doesn’t know why dmg is flashing red. Again Ombre might be just a “fun” or “Cash cow” alt, but still….simple quests give very nice gear imo, much better than Gladiator’s set. Even if pvp’ing! you could have at least upgraded that 70 gear!
/love&respect to BRK for holding back his fist while writing this post
Another hunter with the Cannoneer’s Fuselighter… /facepalm
THE CRIT IS NEGLIGIBLE, AND YOU HAVE 0 USE FOR ON-DEMAND BONUS SPELLPOWER!
I’ve said that far too many times for it to be healthy. Sphere of Red Dragon’s Blood. Go geddit, it’s fantastic especially since you’re in such a dire need of +hit…
Cloak of Tormented Skies
Tankie Cloak FTW!
If you haven’t been reading BRK for the past year at the least, then i would suggest you take a day off from wow and goto: http://www.wowwiki.com/Hunter
Read it all, you will be amazed of the new stuff you will learn Ombre
Honestly, I think you shouldnt of shown his toon name especially if your going to make fun of hs set up. Atchually kinda disappointed in this one BRK. …/sigh
Ombre dude…this is not to make fun of you and I have been there trust me but you will really have to read the basics for your class before you do anything else.
First of all, I suppose Ombre intended to be helped in public.
And as BRK is not a Blizzards employee thand thus not payed for helping people solve “The Riddle of The Aspect of the Viper”.
The only reason he would answer these kind of emails (I bet he gets hundreds of these) is that it’s pretty darn hilarious.
Secondly, if you browse BRK forums you see a growing volume of threads started by a freshly created accounts who beg for help because they just simply don’t know anything about hunters and they’re doing Naxxx.
I suppose these people don’t really read BRKs blog otherwise they wouldn’t ask such a things.
Some folks are new to the game even at 80. …
Try not to forget that some seasoned players can’t be botherd with levelling from 1-80.
This looks like a ‘fine’ On-Line Purchase from a well known auction site if you ask me.
You can change your name in the player account managment section buddie and I suggest you do it soon
gl
A similar thing happened to me when I was leveling a warrior the first time, damn defensive stance. The difference is I was like level 20 and the game had only been out for 3months.
@Sweiff – thanks for linking the wowwiki hunter page so I didnt have to
Off topic i suppose, but the comment about buying off an auction site reminded me about a question i heard while leveling my alt in tundra “Do i need to go vist a trainer to skill up my weapons and where is he?” from..you guessed it a warroir…sheesh some ppl eh?
LOL Ombre is made a fool outta himself
it’s obvious that he is a noob since he’s still wearing t4 at level 80. rofl
i don’t feel bad about Ombre.
i feel sad about the rest of the hunter community that has made rude comments about his gear.
BRK is all about teaching. most of what he got here was nasty comments. i don’t have enough fingers to count the number of times i just hopped on my bird and floated around and chatted with a hunter about his gear. giving pointers advice and the reason as to why some stats don’t work for hunters. most of those was not even in my guild. this site was built to end Huntards, but all i see in the comments are non-teaching jerks.
He has a +15 spirit enchant on his chest piece…
i gotta agree with mel. sure this dude has some problems but he’s looking for help and all he seems to be getting is crap for it. maybe instead of knocking on him alittle constructive advice would be a better approach??
Please people lets not ridecule Ombre, but encourage him in the search for knowledge that has lead him to BRK’s blog. There is a lot of information out there to read Ombre, follow the link Sweiffdude left for you and read and absorb. Let’s leave the nasty bitchin to the lesser classes please.
Oh god please do not let TEJ get ahold of this.
Did anyone else zoom in with the sole purpose of looking for the cheese?
Ombre, please review your gear. lvl70 PvP gear at 80 is, in a word, useless.
There are many quests rewards from Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord that would have upgraded about half your gear right away.
Try the Swiftarrow set from a LW, its a nice move to get your gear in line with your level, at least fairly cheaply.
As far as your talents go, I see some things that could be improved too.
No Improved mend pet? thats a BM no-no (imho)
No Go for the Throat in the MM tree? I would take the one point out of Improved Hunters Mark and drop it in GftT, better focus generation, specially when you raise your crit.
I would also take 3 or 4 points out of Improved Aspect of the Hawk and put them into Improved tracking. IAotH is a % chance, ImpTrack is a base increase to ranged damage, which is our speciality of course.
Just some points for you, I hope they help. I am no master of the class, but I feel that with a few tweaks you would be surprised at the improvement in your stats.
Normally I would have pointed you to BRK-forums where there used to be a friendly atmosphere. Now I have point you elsewhere as the community at BRK’s cba to help anyone anymore unless they “contribute”
Had you posted your question in there they would have eaten you alive. Sadly they have a thread dedicated to making fun of people like you.
So good luck with your hunter, remember to play the game to amuse yourself and not necesserily in the elitist “correct” way!
Why so harsh? If somebody asked me an honest question, I wouldn’t ridicule him like that, why would anybody? And in public like this? Seems unnecessary… What’s up, BRK, having a bad day? Don’t let it out on some random guy, that’s just wrong.
Have not been to the BRK forums in months. Have they gotten as bad as Cerevisae says?
And yah, BRK, hiding the name, would have been kinder.
I present you with exhibit A, the Huntard.
Speaking as a former hunter class officer, most players that are that misgeared are too stupid to waste time on.
“I was once in Viper for all of VoA-10.
#2 on DPS, too.”
Gonna go ahead and call BS on that.. I don’t see how everyone else could fail that bad lol
Wow. Epic be-a-nice-guy fail on this one, BRK.
You’ve changed and blurred the names of “the guilty” before; I can only assume that you didn’t do so now out of spite or negligence.
Granted, this is an epic know-wtf-you’re-doing fail on Ombre’s part, but it seems he came in peace, wrote in hoping for a bit of help, and was held up for public scorn and ridicule.
And, last I checked, UI setup is a purely personal decision. If it works for him, that’s really all that matters, aside from glaring issues such as Hawk instead of Dragonhawk. Seems like this one was hand picked as an opportunity to be hurtful.
Dear Brain, loosen up.
Dear BRK, great post
I have mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, we have a fellow hunter who is looking for guidance on perhaps the preeminent hunter-related website in terms of both community assistance and knowledge. On the other hand, we have a fellow level 80 hunter not even understanding the basics of his class gear, enchants and aspect choices.
Now, the kind hunter in me applauds the courage to ask such a basic question on this site and the subsequent good natured and well-deserved ridicule. However, the evil hunter in me (who has self-taught himself about the hunter class by reviewing as much as I can via the web and otherwise) just has one thing to say, reroll a deathknight as they seem to be the class du jour for noobs.
I guess my point is this, I know how many hours I’ve logged on my hunter to level to 80, obtain 10,000 PvP kills and successfully raid three-quarters of Naxx 25 and it just makes me want to cry knowing that there is someone out there who is clearly willing to drag the class into the sewer by asking a question better issued by a level 10 than a level 80.
I try to not laugh at people who have “stupid” questions, cause I often ask those stupid questions. I try to remind myself that I don’t have proof that someone bought a toon on eBay.
He’s lv 80! His UI is terrible and I don’t mean that “I wouldn’t use such a UI” I mean that it is obvious that the person who placed those buttons didn’t know what he was doing! He doesn’t know what Aspect of the Viper is!
Nah.. It was funny at first but seriously this is totally sad!
Not going to lie… I had once asked someone why it was red while in Aspect of the Viper. Of course it was at lvl 20 but still.
I could understand not knowing where the “red” is coming from. I don’t understand how you get to 80 without different gear. If you were to grind from 70-80 it would take two years and it would feel like a real long, un-drugged root canal. Even on-line levelers would have the quest gear.
This is unexplainable. I’m stumped. And if Brain can’t figure this sh*& out I dunno wth to do.
As for the UI I know a lot of people, myself included, liek to move it out to the edges so you have the most room in the middle of the screen. Dunno about having your Cart Arrow in the middle of the screen though…
Gotta give him credit though… He did listen to BRK and changed to survival.
The excuse that this is an alt is pure BS. There isn’t a person on here that has an 80 alt that doesn’t know enough about it to know what equipment and stats they need at 80.
Three words can sum this poor fellow up…
Dee Dee Dee
A) This question should have been asked by someone who just learned AotV, not someone who has had it for a long time.
B) Someone should have common sense to realize their buffs that are active and start clicking until either the “red text” or all buffs are gone. Process of elimination.
C) If a person with lvl 70 epics quests all the way to 80 they should start seeing a few upgrades no later than 75-78 depending on items.
D) They found this site to ask the question, so how they couldn’t find all the numerous wow/hunter theorycrafting sites is beyond me.
E) Sure some of these comments are mean, but C’MON he’s EIGHTY with EPICS from lvl SEVENTY. That would lead someone to believe this character had experience raiding at 70. An experienced raider would know this stuff let alone by 80. The evidence points to this person not being the one who raided at 70.
F) If you are going to ebay a character PLEASE for the love of Google research the class first. Better yet get some experience with the game first.
This reminds me of when I first started playing vanilla wow. I was in a UBRS group and this priest was asking how to get there b/c they have never been there. Someone goes out to get them, when the priest gets to the raid (it was 15 man at the time) obviously ppl inspected them. They had 2 or 3 items from UBRS equipped. /FACEPALM
PS: BRK nice post
When your mom told you that there was no such thing as a stupid question, she was lying.
Slightly off topic, I was on my alt shammy (yeah, it happens on rare occasions) in Zangarmarsh doing one of those slay this elite mini-boss type quests. Shammy is resto so yeah, I’ll live, but it takes like 20 minutes to kill a mob. Anyway, along comes a hunter who wants to group for the quest. Woohoo, a fellow hunter! Of course I agree, he’s a hunter (Tauren as well), and a 30 second fight is way better than a 20 minute one right? Anyway, we do our thing, no problems. Except I noticed he did the whole fight at full mana with Viper on. Here’s our post fight conversation…
Me: “Viper?”
Him: “Yeah!”
Me: “That like gimps your DPS and stuff. Don’t you like Hawk better?”
Him: “I find I never have to come out of Viper and I do just fine.”
To all the pompous jerks who posted about how poorly this person’s toon is put together: stfu. Here’s a shocking news flash for you: you don’t have to upgrade your lvl 70 gear to reach level 80 if you don’t want to. Here’s another: you can stay in Viper forever and still do all of the solo content. Are either of these choices optimal? No. Does it matter? No – you can play the game however you want.
And BRK – on this one, YOU get an epic /fail. You know there are tons of @$$hats out there in WOW who live to rip on new players. Until today, I had no idea you were one of them.
-1000 Respect Points
While I agree that getting to 80 without upgrades is possible, how do you pass up obvious quest upgrades?
—–
I take back what I just wrote. I should have realized how easy it is to level in Northrend. I did it myself. Both of my characters got to 80 without even stepping foot in Grizzly Hills or Icecrown. Even Dragonblight was done because I went there with a purpose.
Obre has been leveling one zone at a time and will not see quest upgrades until he enters higher level zones. He also doesn’t do 5-mans much, if at all. It’s OK to point him in the right direction, but don’t bash his gear as he really hasn’t seen anything better yet.
It’s quite possible he’s looking at Honor Gear for upgrades.
I don’t remember replacing much before 78 on my hunter … and I didn’t even bother looking at gear for my druid as I leveled him (79 atm) until the craftable 78 gear. Took more time than it was worth to think about given it’ll be replaced as soon as I hit 78-80. 70’s epics were way more than adequate to level with, and then some. The drops and rewards were more useful as gold to level enchanting etc.
As for UI’s … who cares how he likes his screen to look? Give him a break.
If you see a man roofing a house by pounding nails with a screwdriver, do you advise him to try the hammer hanging from his belt?
So me get this straight. You are picking on HIS ui because YOU don’t recognize the icon for his MOUNT?
Or his RACIAL ABILITY?
Wow.
As a lvl 80 hunter, Ombre should at least know what his different aspects do.
No question is stupid, but at least try and figure it out yourself first, before asking.
“He has a tail ring, Brain! A Tail Ring! How is that even possible!?”
Friends don’t let friends play spacegoats.
Hey, Ombre thanx for stickin it out there on behalf of all of us huntards out there w/o the guts to do the same, grin and bear it!
I used to come to this site a lot.
When I started playing a hunter (switched from druid main) about a year and a half ago this _was_ the site I came to.
I learned about kiting. I learned about chain trapping. I learned a lot of useful stuff.
I haven’t been coming here as often. I think the turing point for me was when you started selling things i.e. t-shirts etc. (don’t even get me started on the wooden spirit beast).
Now this…
You _used_ to help people.
/fail
Dear BRK why not just help the guy, or could you be looking into a a position with the TEJ. time will tell
Dear BRK why not just help the guy, or could you be looking into a position with the TEJ. time will tell
@Hammaer:
“there are tons of @$$hats out there in WOW who live to rip on new players”
“New” players? He’s level 80. He’s not a “new” player by any reasonable definition – that is, unless he paid for power levelling, in which case I don’t think he deserves any sympathy for not knowing something he would have known had he not cheated.
@everyone who has read what BRK wrote:
I used to party with Ombre during BC. We used to be in the same guild on the Eitrigg server (first Dark Desciples [sic], later Dark Disciples, then Executioner) until our leader quit to merge with another guild who does, among others, Naxx 25. So sorry I had to play the lesser class (a prot warrior) that I almost forgot how to play my 70 hunter, who is now on a spanish server, and so sorry our guild was behind the times, I feel almost apologetic for Ombre and for my own hunter.
As for Aspect of the Viper? I love it when I use it correctly. I never again have to hold clunky mana pots. The DPS cost erases when I dump my mana for Hawk.
I don’t think what BRK said was mean. Anyone with a sense of humor could tell he was joking about the guy’s action bar. But he seriously should know that…
The thing by the cheese is the Draenei HoT.
