We Might Get a G11

g11“It’s Patchwerk time, Brain!”

“Yes it is, BRK.”

“Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war!”

“Hey Antony…”

“Charge! Kill it! Destroy! Keep the squishies down!”

“BRK…”

“In the words of Rambo, ‘AAAAAHHHHHH!’”

Dude. You’re not firing.”

“Huh? Oh, we must be out of range. Move in a bit.”

“I have, BRK. I still can’t fire.”

“Are you on strike or something?! Time is a-wastin’!”

“My signals are flowing to Fingers, they are pressing keys, but no in-game action is being observed as a result.”

“YOU’RE {expletive deleted} US!”

“No {expletive deleted}, BRK.”

“Well do something!”

“What is the Second Rule of Delicate Electronics Maintenance, BRK? Do you remember?”

“Um… It’s always the crew chief’s fault?”

“No. It is: ‘When in doubt, get a bigger hammer.’”

“Punch that keyboard, Brain!”

“Forming the commands to morph Fingers into Fist right now…”

“This is not the first time this keyboard has fouled up. Bad keyboard is bad!”

“Fist is online. Engaging the number-pad…”

“Hey Brain… just a thought; is this gonna hurt?”

“Testosterone interfering in pain-estimate calculations. Fist is launched. 500 milliseconds to target.”

“PUNCH IT LIKE A BAYBEH!”

/keyboard punch

“Well Brain, did it work?”

“It did indeed, BRK. We have control and are firing at Patchwerk.”

“Get a bigger hammer; it works every time! Yeeha!”

/ninety minutes or so later

“Hey Brain, we’re being asked to go to ten-man Malygos. You still awake?”

“Sure BRK. Let’s rock it.

/engage Malygos

“Here we go, Brain! Yeeha!”

“Problem BRK.”

“What’s that?”

“We’re not firing again.”

“No? Keyboard stuck again?”

“Apparently. You need to go shopping tomorrow and replace this thing.”

“Will do. But for the moment, would you…”

“Punch the keyboard right in the num-pad? Already working…”

“PUNCH IT LIKE A BAYBEH!”

/keyboard punch

/keys go flying

/tilt-legs break off

/complete loss of ability to control WoW-toon achieved

“Um… BRK?”

“We’re still not firing, Brain. What’s going on?”

“Well, we’ve encountered a small problem.”

“Define the problem. Only then can we solve it.”

“That’s pretty good, BRK.”

“Thank you.”

“The keyboard is in itty-bitty pieces.”

“Pieces?”

“Tracked the F12 key as it arced behind the desk.”

“We kinda need that…”

“The Return key is floating in your glass of grape juice.”

“There’s some red stuff on Fingers!”

“That would be blood.”

“We’re not a Death Knight, Brain! This is not optimal!”

“This is {expletive deleted} is what it is.

“How far down is Malygos?”

“He’s at 95% health.”

“And what is our position?”

“Hugging the Main Tank.”

/dead BRK

“Correction; lying dead at the feet of the Main Tank.”

“Let’s recap, Brain. Our keyboard, which we’ve had for years, decided to wig-out two times on boss-fights, and an excessive /keyboard punch popped keys every which way which made us die on Malygos.”

“Bingo, chief.”

“Is there a moral to this insanity that we can illustrate in a blog-post, like… Never punch your keyboard like a baybeh?”

“Not really, no, because I’m about to do that a few more times right now.”

Why? A g11 is nice.. but your performing well right?

    Will it improve your game?

O wait, you can perform the launch and WoW at the same time now… I get it.

The moral of this story is “always keep a spare keyboard” (and mouse). I have the G15 (with the folding monochrome LCD panel) and I love it, but there’s a couple of plain-jane USB keyboards on the shelf behind me Just In Case.

As counsel for the Baybeh’s Association I must inform you that a lawsuit is being drawn up and will soon be filed in the court system.

My client has agreed to drop the lawsuit if you quit, and I quote; Punch it like a Baybeh. end quote.

I have a G11 and two G13s (I dualbox with two separate PCs, so only has G11+G13 and the other just a G13). Having 40 direct keybinds within 6 inches of travel is very nice, if a tad obsessive.

I can’t say I need that many keybinds for my hunter, and could probably get by nicely with just the G11 and the free keys around WASD, but on some other characters I’m probably using about three-quarters of what I have available.

  7. Ketaralethar on March 17th, 2009 9:22 am

I have a G11 and love the G keys for setting up macros, etc…

I wonder when Brain and BRK will have a cameo from Hand or Fingers, or even Stomach.

BRK, keep it up. These little stories are what makes it great fun to imagine your real predicament.

Probably not a good idea to read this in class, but still:

    Logitech gaming keyboards rule!

I have a two-year-old G15, which has the monochrome LED display AND 18 programmable buttons to the left of the keyboard. I seriously don’t know what I would do without it, my fingers are totally used to the button locations associated with my various shots and macros.

The LED is a bit gimmicky, but it is sometimes interesting to look down at it to see what my stats and ammo levels are at any given point in a fight without having to open bags or my character screen.

    I also have a G9 mouse… yummeh!

  14. Lilt and Guilt on March 17th, 2009 10:01 am

I love the G11. I feel it’s the best of the series. The later versions seem to have fewer macro keys.
Here’s a noted photo of how I lay out my bars to flow with the form of the G11 keyset:

My only question is, is it Mac OS compatible? I don’t see anything on Logitech’s site about Mac compatibility, and= I know BRK is running WoW on an iMac.

I’m running WoW on my 17″ Macbook Pro with a secondary full keyboard set-up, so I’d definitely be interested in knowing if the G111 works.

    Please post moar info, BRK!

  16. Armond on March 17th, 2009 10:20 am

@ SmackHim: Don’t be bad. A guy will *always* look for a way to get a new gadget. The lack of old keyboard is just a convenient excuse.

I think these posts are my favorite of yours. Great Stuff, makes me smile at work as I decide who gets disconnected this week. :)

BRK – I think I am gonna take your approach..

I have this 51 inch 1080p Plasman TV. I want a bigger one… where do I punch it.

  19. Nymiria on March 17th, 2009 10:56 am

I actually didn’t like the logitech keyboards at all… :/
I finally gave in and bought a merc stealth and it’s freaking awesome.

  20. WB on March 17th, 2009 11:40 am

Followed by the third rule: There are no problems that the use of excessive force can’t fix. However, the result may in fact be a bigger problem.

    Or, an “opportunity.”

  21. Suffix on March 17th, 2009 11:42 am

BRK. Are you no longer using your G13?

Because you could have done some sweet on the fly macros on M3 to set up your base keyboard. Besides. Its Sexay. Do you REALLY need Two mini LCDs telling you mass amounts of information? You know what, Dumb question.

PS: Rule 3: “Very few problems cannot be solved by using excessive amounts of force. However, the application of this force always creates a new problem that is worse than the original one.”

  22. Muskogean on March 17th, 2009 12:14 pm

Completely hilarious. I can honestly say I have never hit my keyboard but the urge has absolutely been there on more than one occasion. And the sound of a mouse being slapped onto the pad coming from behind me as the girlfriend gets impatient with the response is household constant.

I have the original G15 with 18 macro keys. As a backup and for along on trips with the laptop I have a G11. Very little is missed without the lcd. I mainly use the lcd for Vent for those “okay, who’s speaking?” moments. I am a firm believer in keybindings. G15, Saitek Cyborg mouse, Belkin Nostromo N52, and Saitek Cyborg Command Unit. The Nostromo is far more comfortable of the two units so it has pride of place. Now for a G13 and the G19 when it’s released. :)

  23. ambell on March 17th, 2009 12:53 pm

BRK, if you get a new key board I suggest a Razer Tarantula. I have one they rock.

check out there site here: http://www.razerzone.com/

  24. Seper on March 17th, 2009 1:08 pm

    DONT DO IT BRK!!.

Get the g15. I got it, the little LCD screen is amazing when your in full screen mode.

Set the screen to WoW mode and oyu can watch your stats, bag space, ammo left, etc. etc. Very useful information.

I dont remember the price being drastically different.

    Check it out!

Hahahaha those stories of brain/brk r so funny… I always roll on floor laughing. Gief us moar of those… I feel really pity about ur keyboard brk. Next time replace keyboard sooner and u won’t have so much problems and blood on ur fist ^^

I DID laugh in class. Unfortunately it’s one of those classes with all of 15 people and a professor who whispers for emphasis. Needless to say I got some interesting looks, but totally worth it.

PS BRK you are so much win.

  27. Nick S on March 17th, 2009 1:30 pm

My keyboard was $8, I’ve had it for years, and it’s never been anything but perfect. I’m rubbing the letters off of WASD, though…

  28. cgeorgemo on March 17th, 2009 1:55 pm

After spilling a Coke onto my G15 I can tell you that it comes apart pretty easily for cleaning also. I use the extra 18 keys with the 3 modes (54 combos total) for my additional action bars and the extra bars that ZHunter provides. For my primary movement and button smashing I use a CHProducts MFP panel. Nothing like putting the buttons exactly where I want to ease the arthritis in my fingers.

    http://www.chproducts.com/retail/mfp.html

  29. Abigayle on March 17th, 2009 2:12 pm

I have the old Logitech G15 (with the LCD panel), which in WoW is keyed to my various action bars. I also have separate profiles set up for different toons.

When I found out Logitech was discontinuing this particular keyboard I almost cried. I don’t just use it for WoW – the 54 macro keys are also set up with my Windows hotkeys, and I have different profiles set up to drop functions and other code snippets into apps I’m coding.

This has really been the most versatile keyboard I’ve ever owned, and I’m grateful they released the G11 (I have one as a backup).

I must ask. Was Ego at all wounded by this? I know he can be sensitive.

  31. ineedakite on March 17th, 2009 3:05 pm

I would say get the keyboard i have the G11 and love it the extra macro keys would be awesome and i use it all the time. My keyboard has never failed before and is still great i could not use any other =)

  32. ineedakite on March 17th, 2009 3:12 pm

Well the only other keyboard would be the Optimus Maximus key board
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_eDq4uMV8k

Ya it may be the most awesome keyboard ever BUT i would never pay that much for a key board

  33. Stache on March 17th, 2009 3:23 pm

If you want a keyboard that is so tough you can pound on it get an old style IBM from http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/ You can even wash them in the sink after the inevitable coke spill.

  34. Stang on March 17th, 2009 3:34 pm

I’m getting a G15 soon enough. The LCD looks nice, and the extra keys look nice as well. Haven’t seen the G11 yet…

  35. Stang on March 17th, 2009 3:36 pm

    getting a G13*.

BRK, this is the third time now. Seriously, invest some of that Spirit Beast Pull Toy cash into a proper editing system!

  36. Stang on March 17th, 2009 3:40 pm

Ok, so maybe I DID mean the G15. I’ve got all my boards mixed up.

  37. Linedan on March 17th, 2009 3:50 pm

Get the Logitech. I have a first-generation G15 with the blue lighting and flip-down blue LCD and it is fantastic. I don’t even use the programmability that much, I just love the lighting (my computer’s in our bedroom so it’s great for those late-night WoW sessions after the wife sacks out) and the feel of it. The WoW display is OK (but a little buggy post-Lich King), I mainly use it with Ventrilo to see who’s talking, or with the clock.

  38. Fluffywumpki of Kilrogg on March 17th, 2009 4:08 pm

I’ve got a G11, and one bad thing about it (on the Mac) is that the macro modifiers DON’T WORK. G1-G12 map to F1-F12, and G13-G18 map to 1-6. M1-M3 and MR do nothing as near as I can tell.

    Five words:

    Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000.

Best keyboard in the world, hands down.

  42. Flyntlock on March 17th, 2009 6:04 pm

I have a Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 at work and a G11 at home.

I started playing wow with the original G15 and now wouldn’t know what I would do without the 18 keys on the left hand side. I have the top 6 keys bound for ranged attacks, the bottom 6 keys for melee, and the middle 6 remapped for movement. Very nice for Gothik when I hold my Q or E “keys” (G7 or G9) and tap my G5 key (steady/auto/kill shot macro). The only key I miss is when I’m doing masters in finance homework and need the calculator brought up. (yes I could remap one of the G-keys to open that when I’m not wow-ing)

For long periods of typing though, I love the NEK 4000. So thesis papers get done at work…

  43. Sevei on March 17th, 2009 6:24 pm

lol I only have a cheap and cheerful wireless Logitech Keybord. Doesn’t have a cool name or any numbers on it. Plus no macro keys. Man, I feel like such a n00b.

My mom has a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 and when she first got it, i used it and i was like “I’m keeping this!” but i had to give it back :(

  47. Felandra on March 17th, 2009 10:15 pm

I’m sticking to my Logitech Wave… Nice softish pad for the hands, nicely contoured keys, perfect for both gaming and typing. And some improved layout.

The choice for people who just want an upgraded keyboard with a generally conservative layout. And it of course has 6 customizeable buttons, though they are not terribly reachable all the time.

Best of all, its cheap and so far 100% reliable.

  48. Krieghoff on March 17th, 2009 11:45 pm

I’m not sure if I’m gonna get murdered for this or not…
But couldn’t you have switched to the mouse?

    *gets ready to run*

  49. Corey143 on March 18th, 2009 12:05 am

If I could suggest I keyboard, I would direct you to the Razer Lycosa. It doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles of the G11, but the keys are like typing on butter.

Definately the best keyboard I’ve ever bought, and not a problem yet.

  50. criscopolo on March 18th, 2009 3:20 am

I just wanted to wish my birthday buddy a Happy Birthday!

  51. Garwulf on March 18th, 2009 3:49 am

“I’m not sure if I’m gonna get murdered for this or not…
But couldn’t you have switched to the mouse?”

    …exactly what I was thinking

Also, unless they released an updated driver, which I doubt, the G keys do not work on the mac. I have the same model, but with the lcd (G15). I was pissed when I got my mac because Logitech says it’s compatible, but it’s not “fully” compatible. It’s only compatible if you want a big clunky gaming keyboard without the added functionality of the 18 macro keys.

It’s kind of misleading because it shows the mac-compatible icon on the Logitech site, but when you click on product specs: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/285&cl=us,en there is no mention of mac compatibility.

I use my mac keyboard and love it now, but I do miss the lighted keys at times.

  52. Alinidale on March 18th, 2009 4:48 am

    Anyone tried the G19?

  53. Ghanur on March 18th, 2009 8:15 am

One keyboard to rule them all: IBM Type M *gg*

Mine was manufactured over 25 years ago – still working flawlessly.

There is one manufacturer who builds something similar to it
    http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/

Or use a keyboard from Cherry (Logitech keyboards are from Cherry, at least the keys *g*).

  54. hawkinson on March 18th, 2009 10:37 am

I picked up the new version of the G15 and I love it. I have it set up to do all sorts of fun stuff based on conditions, like launch my WoW, vent, roll for loot, follow, and so on and so forth. It’s great.

  55. gnominator on March 18th, 2009 2:18 pm

i use the n52te and i loves it!!!

  56. Marathonian on March 18th, 2009 3:41 pm

That is the reason you don’t punch a keyboard, keys can (and will) fly.

Next time just bitch slap it when it starts acting up.Just hard enough to let it know who’s boss.

If all else fails, try asking it nicely to work pretty please

    Hey talking works on plants.

Keyboards are made of plastic which usually come from oil.

    Oil used to be plants.

    Sillier crap has happened.

  57. Madlarkin on March 18th, 2009 7:57 pm

Hehe BRK seems to share same philosophy as me. If something doesn’t work kick/punch it whats the worst that could happen it still not work :u)?

My friends says my logic is flawed but I disagree…..

I have some plain old 12 dollar KB that I love using I just move my movement keys over one row to esdf to add more keys to bind.

  58. Dagmar d'Surreal on March 18th, 2009 7:59 pm

Clarification for the confused: The G15 Logitech /originally/ made had the LCD screen, a spinwheel for multimedia controls, and eighteen G-keys, then someone there lost their mind and decided that was just too many keys, so they “forked” the product line. The new G11 got the eighteen G-keys and the new G15 kept the screen but only got /six/ G-keys. *sigh* Now they’ve got a G19 with a color screen, and twelve G-keys (which costs a bloody fortune) but does at least have /powered/ USB ports (which the others don’t, making them unsuitable for much more than plugging in your mouse and USB headset–although that’s probably enough).

BRK: Yes, you absolutely do want a G11 and you should think about a G5 mouse while you’re at it if you don’t already have a mouse with two buttons under your thumb–one for Hunter’s Mark and /petattack, and the other for /petpassive. You will absolutely notice a difference in your reaction time on pet controls at critical moments just from the thumb button. I’ve been using the original G15 for a couple of years now, and those keys are where all the conditional stuff (like Aimed Shot, Disengage, and the all-important Feign Death macro) lies waiting for the panicked machinations of my pinky finger. *OH* it’s also quite a fine keyboard and a decent price for it.

  59. Dagmar d'Surreal on March 18th, 2009 8:00 pm

Ah yes, Ventrilo will also install a little plugin for it that’ll make that LCD display useful for showing who was just running their mouth while the raid leader was speaking.

  60. Pete on March 19th, 2009 6:40 am

Second the IBM Model M reccomendation. Unlike all modern keyboards it’s build on a metal backplate, and all the keys are individual switches rather than modern membrane designs. Punch it and you dent your fist.

The only downside is that it CLICKS VERY LOUDLY.

  61. Imrathand on March 20th, 2009 9:00 pm
