Amazing Facts About Today

BRK » 18 March 2009 » In Blog » 153 Comments

401. It is indeed our 40th birthday. Thank you mom!

2. The “Your airbag is broken!” idiot light on the 350z’s dash came on at 100,250 miles.

3. Our extended warranty ended at 100,000 miles.

4. The Nissan dealership charged $100 to diagnose the light.

5. They wanted $2100 to replace the sensor and the passenger-side airbag

6. While our car was being “repaired”, we looked at the new 370z.

7. We want a new 370z

8. The Nissan dealership was charging extra for interior protectant, rust inhibitor, a pin stripe, and replacing the air in the tires with nitrogen.

9. We totally called “shenanigans!” on their $2100 quote, guessing that the idiot light was just an accidental thrown code.

10. We drove for two and a half hours afterwords, no airbag-light illuminated.

11. We are getting cupcakes for our birthday.

12. We know this because our son, who we picked up at school today, bellowed, “Did you get the cupcakes for your birthday like mommy told grandma to do?”

13. We have decided to write our book. No foolin’.

14. Our book-writin’ will probably impact the quantity of posts on this blog. We apologize.

15. We refuse to get a “Dummies Guide to Writing a Book”, for if we know how hard this is going to be, we probably won’t start.

16. P.G. Wodehouse and Lawrence Sanders are our muses. Robert Ludlum too, but not the Bourne series, but instead, The Road to Gandolfo, (our favorite book of all time).

17. We’re planning on investing six months of writing, followed by several hundred rejection letters from publishers. We’re ready!

18. Mrs BRK has been with us for 13 of our 40 years on this good Earth. She is the best thing that ever has happened or will ever happen to us.

19. Without Mrs BRK, none of this — our blog, WoW-career, and now potential literary career — would be possible or worthwhile.

20. Our ability to write would be much enhanced with a new 370z.

    Happy Birthday, BRK

  7. Lokkni on March 18th, 2009 3:41 pm

What kind of book per se? Your /daniel mode posts are always entertaining but I don’t know how viable your auto-biography would be :P

A WOW hunter guide, while cool, would be obsolete by the time you get two chapters in.

Me thinks a fiction book of some sort then…perhaps with Dwarves, guns and bunnehs?

  8. Ahrtu on March 18th, 2009 3:41 pm

Happy birthday BRK! Good luck on the 370Z, and smart moves calling shenanigans!

  9. Kestrel on March 18th, 2009 3:43 pm

    15 is just funny.

And 19 means “Mrs. BRK is the real bread winner that allows Mr. BRK to waste his time with non-wealth-building activities.”

Hey Happy Birthday, even though I’m a holy light wielding Paladin, I still love your blog. Take care and many more happy birthdays to you!

  18. Akiosama on March 18th, 2009 3:57 pm

Happy big 40, BRK! Have a great birthday!

Good luck with your car – you’ve got pretty good taste there. The Nissan Z-series are some of my favorites (though I was most partial to the last model of the 300Z, myself).

Also, good luck with your book – I’ve been pushing around the idea myself. I hope yours progresses better than mine has – I’ve been all planning, no writing, so far.

Again, Happy Birthday, and good health in the many years to come.

    My cheers to BRK!

    Akiosama

  19. Ben on March 18th, 2009 3:58 pm

    HAPPY BDAY BRK :D

  25. Kusamoto on March 18th, 2009 4:10 pm

Happy birthday, man. I’d buy you a toast if you didn’t live on the coast opposite from my location. Come to GenCon and I’ll buy you one.

And grats on your decision to give up 6 months of your life to complete your book. I still need to do that, as well. I think I’ve finally recovered from the 150+ page screenplay I wrote 10 years ago. Don’t take any breaks, don’t slow down, don’t let anyone read it ’till it’s done. Plow through, even if you think sections are bad, and finish it. Polish comes on edits #1 and #2. That’s the extent of any helpful advice I might have (although Stephen King’s “On Writing” is probably the best book on the subject I’ve ever read…worth a look).

  26. Steve on March 18th, 2009 4:12 pm

Fiction or non-fiction? If non-fiction don’t write it, write a proposal and a sample chapter, that’s what publishers pay advances for. Then they will work with you on what they want the final book to be.

  27. Kai on March 18th, 2009 4:20 pm

From As it Stands wow blog, we wish you a happy B-day!

  28. Carnage on March 18th, 2009 4:21 pm

    12. We know this because our son, who we picked up at school today, bellowed, “Did you get the cupcakes for your birthday like mommy told grandma to do?”

    Kids, aren’t they great? :D

Of course the question remains, was he excited about your birthday….
    or the cupcakes?

Nevertheless, Congratulations on your milestone Mr. Howell.
    /cheers

  29. Darksentinel on March 18th, 2009 4:27 pm

Bah, day before mine ^_^ (although due to time zones it’s only a few hours ahead ;) )
    Happy birthday, hunter man!

  31. homegrownstrawberries on March 18th, 2009 4:30 pm

Yeay! Happy Birthday, good luck with your book. (I really should start mine….) and good luck with the car. Your best bet is to hope Mrs. BRK wants one. >^_^<

  32. Iron on March 18th, 2009 4:38 pm

BRK!! Dude… you dinged 40, you can now get yourself to the nearest ‘mount vendor’ and pick up your new ‘mount’! Of course, you will have to decide whether the new 370 is an epic mount – in which case you have another 20 dings to go pardner! – or only a 60% increase to your current travel speed?!

    gratz old friend!

so if you dinged 40, does this mean today you can wear mail armor to work?

  33. Dwynell on March 18th, 2009 4:41 pm

    Happy Birthday!!

How does one pre-purchase the future BRK book?

    /giggle excitedly

  34. Lee on March 18th, 2009 4:43 pm

    Happy Brithday BRK!

I wish you and your family all the best, have a lovely day!

By the way, if the quantity of blog posts will be far less in the future is way ok, as long as the quality, humor and sarcasm stays the same. :-)

  35. Bristal on March 18th, 2009 4:50 pm

BRK’s Birthday!? Should be a WoW/hunter seasonal event!!! With all kinds of huntery, big-red-kitty achievements and fireworks-shooting epic ranged weapons and stuff.

I look forward to hearing about your writing endeavours.

  36. Rikaku on March 18th, 2009 4:56 pm

    Happy Birthday!

And you can’t get burnt orange, you have to get red. You are Bigredkitty after all.

  37. Senzir on March 18th, 2009 5:01 pm

    Happy Birthday Brk!!! :]

Great taste in cars! Good luck on the book and enjoy the cupcakes! :]

  38. Felandra on March 18th, 2009 5:04 pm

Ohhh the big 40, truly the time where men suddenly want new cars… Hmm relation?

Congrats! And were the cupcakes great?

  39. Clioratha on March 18th, 2009 5:06 pm

    Grats on 40, BRK!

And I agree with Iron that an epic mount is in order….

Although Mrs. BRK may disagree, and like the rest of your readership, I have no desire to cross the redhaired maelstrom of fury….

  40. Teaakius on March 18th, 2009 5:13 pm

At 27? I have a couple more years to hope for a hot red-headed wife, then. Congratulations and happy birthday.

  41. Heather on March 18th, 2009 5:16 pm

  42. Cycon on March 18th, 2009 5:22 pm

  43. Holyreaper on March 18th, 2009 5:24 pm

    Happy B-day big huntah BRK!!

good luck on your non written 6 month writing!(?)

  44. Shagrat on March 18th, 2009 5:27 pm

40th birthday is a totally legit reason to buy a new car and not tell the wife about it.

  45. Valkure on March 18th, 2009 5:28 pm

I smell a bit of unsubtle hints for the MRS. :)

Happy bday! Hope those unsubtleties influenced her.

  46. Desdanova on March 18th, 2009 5:30 pm

    Happy Birthday!

I’m assuming that you’ll get the red 370z. It just isn’t a real sports car if it isn’t red!

Just to be honest, I drive a Forest Green ‘03 Acura TL Type-S. Four door sports car that doesn’t kill you with the insurance premium, and isn’t a neon light begging the police to pull you over. But that is how I roll.

    Enjoy.

  47. TheBossyk on March 18th, 2009 5:32 pm

Happy Bday BRK ^.^ hope u enjoy ur new car :P

  48. Saithir on March 18th, 2009 5:40 pm

    Happy Birthday BRK!

This grumpy dwarf here is not good at wishing and stuff, so I just wish you and your family at least another 40 levels of fun and goodness. :]

    And yes, a 370z is a valid level 40 mount. ;)

  49. Zanpher on March 18th, 2009 5:40 pm

So …. is Mrs. BRK older or younger?

  50. Foxfire on March 18th, 2009 5:50 pm

May epics rain down on you endlessly and may all your hits be crits!

  51. Aggregate on March 18th, 2009 5:51 pm

Cupcakes are awesome! I hope you get one of the pink ones.

    Happy Birthday mate!

As one of your many Australian fans I will confirm that I would buy your book despite the exchange rate and crazy shipping charges.

  56. Hobsonchoice on March 18th, 2009 6:06 pm

    Happy Birthday BRK

If the book ends up being anything like the blog posts, especially the brain posts, it will be a big seller. I agree with the electronic format request!

  57. Thaylla on March 18th, 2009 6:07 pm

    Happy Birthday!

Best of luck with writing. It’s a labour of love, but I’d say you’re crazy enough to pull it off.

    —————–

Younger, 29 years old, no more than that.

  60. Papaoomowmow on March 18th, 2009 6:20 pm

“We have decided to write our book. No foolin’.”

    GOOD!!! (I’ll buy it)

  61. For the Pie on March 18th, 2009 6:23 pm
Younger, 29 years old, no more than that.
That would make her 16 when she married him, and I think BRK said she was older in an Airman Howell story.

  62. For the Pie on March 18th, 2009 6:24 pm

    failure of quotes

  63. Stang on March 18th, 2009 6:45 pm

Again, Happy Birthday BRK. I wish you well. Good to know not everyone who plays WoW is a youngling like meself….

…Hm. So we need two people brave enough to sneak up on Mr. Howell, tackle him to the ground, bind him at the hands and legs…

…And give him the forty birthday bumps I’m sure are LONG overdue. We’ll do it while he is feasting upon cupcakes. Sound good?

  64. Pike on March 18th, 2009 6:48 pm

    Happy birthday, Dan!

Nice car. Never pictured you as a Nissan bloke.

  71. Brian Lynch on March 18th, 2009 7:18 pm

Definitely get Stephen King’s “On Writing”. Kusamoto’s totally on the money with that.

I’d recommend some others, but it depends on whether you’re writing fiction or non-fiction. His book’s a lot like your approach to hunter-blogging – straightforward, easy to understand, and lots of humor.

    -Brian

PS, happy 40th, old man Kitty!

  72. Dreyja on March 18th, 2009 7:24 pm

    Happy B-day old man. ;-p

I’d get you that car for your b-day if I could but considering I couldn’t even swing the spirit beastie toy, that would likely outstrip my credit abilities.

Best of luck on the book!

The Road to Gandolfo is a great read, as far as Ludlum goes I have to read it and it’s sequel The Road to Omaha just to get away from his usual dry wordy stuff….
Good luck on the writing man!!

  76. kunukia on March 18th, 2009 7:54 pm

Write, you fool! Write like the wind!

And buy the damn car, already. If you have to sit in traffic for 3 hours during a shuttle launch, at least sit in a cool-looking car.

  82. Durkonkell on March 18th, 2009 9:38 pm

    Happy birthday, BRK!

Congratulations on deciding to write that book! Go for it!

I also see you discovered your ‘warranty has run out’ dashboard light. Every car has one, cunningly disguised as something important like ‘Airbag’ or ‘Traction Control’.

    -Durkon and Nimitz.

  83. Darand on March 18th, 2009 9:43 pm

Happy B-Day! I ding 40 this year as well.

  84. Azlen on March 18th, 2009 9:52 pm

Save yourself some grief… write a sample treatment (1 or 2 chapters, tops) and a book outline.. shop those around and see if you get any interest.

Thats the way of the world in writing these days…:)

  85. Krieghoff on March 18th, 2009 10:09 pm

Life Begins at 40! So you need a new 370z to make that life fun. Just grind a little, I am sure you will get it.

  88. Aerislan on March 18th, 2009 10:35 pm

    1. I hope I’m still playing games when I’m 40.

2.-10. The automotive industry and all of its subsidiaries see human beings as nothing more than walking bundles of cash.
    11. Mmm, cupcakes.

    13. I’d buy that

    18-19. You’re one of the lucky <50%, man. :)

  90. maessik on March 18th, 2009 11:33 pm

I was always aware that there was something slightly beyond the norm that enticed – beyond your insight and methodology – your use of the scientific method with regard to ‘hunterology’ (and obviously in life) – your campaign for why over how – and your ability to credit those around you.

something in the way you deliver it all.

now i begin to see the thread… P.G. Wodehouse – the true master.

Once again, i’m impressed. a very happy birthday to you.

this fire mage wishes you a happy 40th, and best of luck on your book. if it’s as entertaining as your videos and your blog, you’re going to do well.

questions that have probably already been asked before me, but i’ll do it anyway: is your book going to be WoW related? or airman howell related?

  125. Ezjidday on March 19th, 2009 12:10 pm

Happy Birthday to the BRK! If it weren’t for you I might still be a huntard today, swinging away with my little axe.

    Happy BD BRK.

I have read and enjoyed your blog from when I first got the itch to pick up the game.

You were what inspired me to roll a hunter, and through patience and hard work, became the top DPS in my guild and a co-GM and respected class lead. Good hunter karma is good. Doing your damned best and earning the praise of your peers is what makes it all worthwhile.

I quit the game 11 months ago, and now have a 3 week old baby daughter. I still read your blog every week, and once in awhile get the pangs… but I digress.

Happy Birthday once again and thank you for all your patient advice, humour and shenanigans.

    Yours
    - Korvenuz, previously of EU Ravenholdt

Gratz on the Ding and good luck getting the new car.
