Even the Volume Controller Works

So we bought the G11 keyboard from Logitech and color us surprised! The GamePanel software that came with our G13 gamepad automatically identified our G11 and configured itself to work with the new hardware!

g11_mac

The G11 has eighteen extra “G-buttons” on the left of the keyboard, plus three “M-keys” that allow each G-button to have three functions assigned to it. 18 x 3 = 54 buttons, people. And with the new software, they’re all accessible on the Mac.

Can the software run the G11 and the G13 at the same time? Yes!

g13_g11

The G13 cannot be plugged into either of the G11’s two USB ports as the G13 requires more power than the G11 provides, but the software has no problem running both the keyboard and the game pad simultaneously.

Sixty-six buttons on the G13, fifty-four buttons on the G11… there’s just way too much stuff here. We’re on overload.

How are you liking the G13? Its finally on the market here but I’m still on the fence about it (mainly because I play on 2 different pc’s though I suspect I could fix any actionbar issues with a few profiles in bartender)….

D@mn now you have a lot of keys i would have to start making worthless macros like /dance /y ITS PARTY TIIME just to fill those keys and feel like they have a meaning.

I have the original G15 with the 18 keys and its absolutely amazing. I’ve had it for about 4 years now and I’m ready to replace it, not because its bad but because I’ve just worn out the keys ;) I just wish they made the G13 the same as the previous G15 v1. The v1 had the 18 keyset with the panel at the top as well. I don’t use the panel for much accept ventrillo, but its really nice to know who’s talking to you in game…and to have that extra information at times. The new version of the G15 doesn’t have all of the keys, I believe they trimed it down so the keyboard wouldn’t be so big, but I have plenty of deskspace, so I don’t mind.

I love my G13, not one regret in purchasing it. I had previously bought one of the original G15’s which is essentially the same as the G11 but it has a flip up LCD. When Logitech finally released Mac Drivers I went out and bought the G13 and I can’t imagine playing anyway else now. The G13 and G15 play really nice together!

I was a little skeptical about how well the G13 thumb joystick would work but I can honestly say it works great and it’s an easy quick way to move back a few steps when trying to get range in a close fight.

Anyway enough commercial, glad you like yours BRK. :)

Congrats on the G11. I’ve been using the original G15 for sometime now and it’s great.

I found it very easy to program the keys, it’s been very durable, and I love the backlit keys. You won’t be disappointed with your G13.

  7. Klinderas on March 19th, 2009 9:04 am

That IS a lot of buttons. I’d be tempted to get something like that too, though. Makes keybinding for PvP a lot easier.

I bought a G13 last week and it has been a real struggle to get used to it. BRK can you give us an update on how you’re using yours? I’m sure things have changed a bit from your original post.

I’m also trying to break my keyboard turning habit… so maybe doing those two things at once is just too much?

  9. Borkr on March 19th, 2009 9:28 am

    Hiya BRK,
I’m a Mac user and I’ve had the G11 for over a year. I picked up the G13 recently as I have very large hands and the n52 I’ve been using for years always left my hand cramped (been using the n52 since it came out with Mac software, primarily for FPS games though).

I love the G13 especially the movement stick, as I’m a tank and moving, while spamming my attacks and using the mouse for looking/turning/selecting targets for taunts, the new stick allows me to not need that third and fourth hand to get all I need accomplished done.

And with the software that came out with it the G11 extra keys are now functional which is an added bonus.

For those on Keyboard turning. you need to get off that habit asap. Mouse turning is 1000% percent faster and more precise. the only thing that would make it difficult is if your also a button clicker. If you are you need to ween yourself off that as well…

    @Demeth
I got a G13 at about the same time as BRK. It was a really rough struggle at first, but now I couldn’t imagine playing without one. I will say that I go back to my regular keyboard for tanking in raids and heroics, because my muscle memory is still not quite there for the somewhat jerky reactions you need as tank, but I should be able to master the G13 for that soon enough as well.

But even with that, the G13 managed what I pointlessly tried for years: it broke my keyboard turning habit. Now I cackle when I quickly run and turn when we do Heigan.

I would say that you should give the G13 at least four weeks, to get your muscle memory to actually get there.

Hey BRK – I have and like the G11 for gaming but I can’t type text on it to save my life. I would get invest $20 for a book-writing-keyboard. Those sometimes come as freebies with new cars ;-)

  12. Leejin on March 19th, 2009 11:15 am

    I heart my G11.
Makes it nice to layout my UI like the keys are on the macro side.

Oh… Happy Birthday BRK, I feel bad I missed it yesterday…

Looks pretty sweet BRK – let us know how it works out :D

  15. poilbrun on March 19th, 2009 12:20 pm

I bought the Nostromo N52 to help with keybinds and I could never really get to grips with it. I moved action bars with Bartender trying to make the layout on the screen similar, but it didn’t help.

I thought I was maybe used to the usual keyboard shortcuts for my main, so I even started a brand new reroll, using the Nostromo from level 1… no luck.

I now only use it in photoshop… having obscure shortcuts available at the press of one button is pretty useful!

Hearing that it’s working on your mac is good news.

I’m really interested in either the G19 or G13, but I think I need to check them out in person first. If the G19 was in the 99.00-129.00 neighborhood I think I’d go with it for sure, but 199.00 is a little steep for a kb.

The mac kb is nice, but I sure do miss the additional keys from my G15.

Thanks for the updates on your new gadgets. :)

Awesome to hear, I’ll have to try this software out tonight in Naxx-10. Good to see Logitech FINALLY got around to releasing software for the G11 line.

  18. Dreyja on March 19th, 2009 1:48 pm

Would anyone have anything to say about comparing the G11 to an n52e, which is what I have. I still don’t have all of the buttons assigned because I used some of them to strafe… I have finger issues. ;)

  19. Shahrum on March 19th, 2009 1:57 pm

BRK, can you take a photo of what your desk looks like with all of this gear? Thanks!

  20. Kattrinsaa on March 19th, 2009 2:57 pm

I have the fang gamepad from the folks that make the zboard. overall i wasn’t impressed with it. If I could figure out how to program the buttons other than drag/drop preset commands it would be useful I think.

  21. SmackHim on March 19th, 2009 3:14 pm

Give us some insight on what you have all the keys programmed for.

  22. Wiggamar on March 19th, 2009 4:10 pm

Whats the point in having the game pad and keyboard?? I thought the game pad replaced the keyboard in-game, minus text chatting and some other functions. Or is it you dont use a mouse? I would think having to jump from pad to keyborard would be more cumbersome then to just use one or the either

  23. bish on March 19th, 2009 4:21 pm

Wiggarmar – I use the G13 for all my combat macros mostly. The extra keys on my G15 I use for other things like casting fishing, target macros for rare spawns, and quick gear changes in Outfitter.

Hey BRK…Gratz on your new kb.

I’m about to pull the trigger on the G11 as well, but I have one question about it. It wouldn’t be a show-stopper for me, but I heard a rumor that the extra USB ports on the back of the G11 are only 1.0, not the faster 2.0.

    Can anyone confirm this?

  25. Dreyja on March 19th, 2009 5:33 pm

@ Wiggamer – this confuses me as well. I want to avoid the keyboard as much as possible which is why I have the n52. If I tried to bind combat macros on that AND a keyboard… pfft I’d be even slower than I am now = /FAIL. Perhaps BRK is just that uber and sprouts a 3rd arm. ;) I wouldn’t mind that skill.

  26. Amaascus on March 19th, 2009 6:19 pm

So was this a compromise with Mrs. BRK instead of a new 370z?

  27. Tequilafly on March 19th, 2009 11:35 pm

That is some sweet gear, but I’m curiouse if anyone is using or has used the NVIDIA 3D system to play WOW with. I been kicking the idea of getting it but dont want to do it if its of low quality.

    Buttons…. Buttons…… Must …have …. moar buttons………

I’m 6′4 with huge hands. The n52 was too small for me. Is the g13 bigger and just my size ?

  31. Wye-Mannoroth on March 20th, 2009 5:18 pm

    Edit button broken =(
I use an ergonomic ms kb the one with the split in the middle and spaced out keys (told ya my hands are huge) and a track ball. I do the standard wasd movement. is it that much of a learning curve to get used too the game pad. The m52 was to cramped me me so I gave up on it.

The USB ports on the back of the G11 are not 2.0.

They are still pretty handy for things like syncing/charging my mp3 player.

I love the G11, if anything, just for the beautifully backlit keys.
